An avid reader of works by Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandlers, Ross MacDonald, and James M. Caine, I longed for Hollywood to get the noir detective genre right, again.Chicago Sun-Times religion journalist Cathlee Falsani immerses herself in the 14 films of Joel and Ethan Coen and asks spiritual and religious questions of the films. Does the Coen brothers' dark humor, verbal slapstick comedy, grim judgments and bleak contexts offer an avenue to the deeper issues of death, betrayal, greed, loyalty in an environment in which God appears to be absent? What a colossal disappointment! The book is nothing but lengthy plot summaries followed by short "Moral of the Story" paragraphs which, in my view, completely misinterpret the message of the films. The author is clearly confused between her religious beliefs, reality, and the intended meaning of the brothers. A disservice to two of the great filmmakers of our day.

a bit raw for me....not what I was expecting for a Bible Study option.

I was so excited to read this book. I'm actually working on an essay regarding the same topic, religious themes in the work of the Coen Bros. and I wanted to use this book as a baseline to work from.Unfortunately, it is almost completely useless in when it comes to analysis or criticism. The chapters consist of plot summaries of each film (as if you'd be reading this book if you hadn't seen the movies) and then a 2-3 paragraph conclusion that purports to reveal the "moral of the story." The only two movies the author seems to put any real thought into are The Big Lebowski and Fargo. It seems like she may have only seen some of the others once or twice and really has nothing to say about them. To whittle a Coen Bros. movie down to a supposed moral is over-simplistic in and of itself. But to attempt sum up the point of such complex films in less than one page, without referencing specific quotes or scenes or reviews, is just outrageous.Then there are the little annoyances. For example, the author refers to the three washer-women in 'O Brother Where Art Thou' as Homer's muses when they are clearly meant to represent the sirens. Errors like this make it difficult to take the rest of the book seriously.The author seems to have done minimal research and doesn't even offer any unique insight into most of the films. The thesis seems to be "These films contain religious themes" and not much beyond that. If I got a first-year English student's literary critique of a book or film, and they spent 90% of the paper giving me a plot summary, I would hand the paper back and have them do it again. That's essentially what this book does.I am very disappointed.

IMHO the Coen brothers are unique screenwriters with so much to say. Guess I was expecting a little more insight from this book.

Just purchased my own Kindle copy of The Dude Abides, since my paper copies kept being given away to strangers on flights. I also thought I'd try saving a tree, or the part that makes The Dude Abides anyway.Great book for a lot of reasons, first and foremost because it helps deliver some clarity to the existential chaos that is inevitable in Coen films. Secondly, Cathleen Falsani, doesn't try to recreate the Coen brothers for her book, she respects their art and influence and helps viewers and readers interact with it, to maybe ask better questions.

This lends a new understanding of the stories of the early believers. He includes the circumstances and descriptions of the outstanding letters and essays of Bahá'u'lláh. His in depth explanations of those writings, their purpose, and the meaning that can be found within them is inspiring. Finally this wonderful 4 volume set is available to kindle readers. Now I can take it everywhere! I am also looking forward to see what other readers highlight.

This first volume is part history, part poetry, part religious discourse, and part description of the Bahai faith. The author's knowledge of all of these subjects comes through. It was an easy read with ample footnotes and cited sources. If you are just learning about baha'u'lah and his faith, you can't go wrong by reading this book.

The is the first book in an amazing 4 part series for members of the Baha'i Faith and seekers who have the energy it takes to complete. It is beginning to the end of the prophet Baha'u'llah's life and scriptural works. This is an amazing author who has written many books on the Faith. The story of the messenger is moving and beautiful, and his works so eloquent you feel the words could not have come from anywhere but God.

The first 3 of the 4 volumes of this great series are now available for Kindle from Amazon.I recommend this series and especially the first volume to anyone who wants to understand how Bahai's understand the Word of God to have been revealed again in our time. This series provides the context of what was going on around Baha'u'llah's work and life, why various writings and tablets were revealed and to whom, and provides provisional translations of many passages that have not yet been officially translated.

This could also be called "Volume One" of this four-volume set. Mr. Taherzadeh was one of the foremost scholars of the Baha'i Faith. He described many of the tablets written by/revealed by Baha'u'llah that are not always translated into English at this time. He interlaced them with delightful essays on the early believers and on spiritual principles. An excellent read.

I read this book many years ago. Since that time I have more difficulty reading print, but Kindle fire works fine for me. I am ever grateful to be reading it again. It gives me inspiration as well as thorough history of the Baha'i Faith. Adib Taherzadeh had offered such a gift through his writing. I hope Volume 3 and 4 will soon appear for kindle. I keep looking.

This first volume makes the early years of Baha'u'llah's dispensation come alive. It adds fascinating context to His early writings.

I've gone completely digital and it was a source of disappointment that the four volume set had not been made available as eBooks UNTIL NOW. George Ronald has started with a few ebooks available and I could not be happier - hallelujah! Two out of four volumes so far in this collection so that means they will all be available soon. I bought this to show my various body workers so they could apply Tom Myers' myofascial release techniques on me. Very clear with photographs. Tom has held seminars in the area, but they can be cost prohibitive, especially for massage therapists. This isn't him, nor a video, but the next best thing. I was excited to see that he made this book when I was buying my second copy of Anatomy Trains (after giving my first to my chiropractor.). I'm not a body worker, but have used the techniques in this book to relieve my own trigger points. OH...the head fascia's connected to you foot fascia... What many doctor's couldn't explain or effectively treat is being resolved with myofascial release. This book, and Tom's efforts to research and put into print, his discoveries, have truly been an answer to my prayers

This is a fantastic book for myofascial release. It compliments my practice and I am already integrating it with my myoskeletal techniques. Normally I would highlight or underline passages in a book that I thought were worth coming back to, but if I had done that with this book I would have underlined the first 50 pages. The illustrations of the techniques and the description of the anatomy were helpful. This is also a great hands on application of Myers's "Anatomy Trains" book, which I would also highly suggest purchasing so that this book makes more sense when describing the various myofascial lines.

The missing component in massage therapy training (even at the neuromuscular level) can be found in this book. Muscles, bones and other body systems, such as lymph and circulatory are all part of most training programs. The nervous system while touched upon in basic courses, is studied in further detail in neuromuscular courses... but the one system far less understood is the fascial network. Fascia is touched upon and some techniques with specific fiber direction may be taught, but fascial assessment and understanding is grossly overlooked.This book holds the keys to successful client care that any therapist with a true desire to change their clients bodies, should have a copy of. It has made a tremendous impact on my neuromuscular practice. If you want to have that special something that separates your work from the majority of other therapists and keeps your clients coming back for more and referring new clients, this is one of the best books you could purchase.

I just recieved this book today.It is full of great practical information on FRT. I will be using this book for a long time.Its the best book ive seen on techniques that can be put into practice straight away since i got Art Riggs Deep Tissue Massage Manual. i would highly recommend both of these books to all bodyworkers. Both are packed with information and reasonably priced. After the introduction to fascial release technique there is a small section on how to develop your touch, bodyreading and then there are 6 chapters on different parts of the body.It looks really good.lots of drawings and photographs of doing different techniques.Highly recomended.#

Fascia is fascinating and this book helps you understand why. It gives an overview of fascia in the first few chapters and then goes into each section of the body (abdomen, spine, neck, etc...) and explains myofascial release techniques for each muscle group. With all that said, the book itself isn't too large or overbearing. If you don't need it for school, it's a great reference guide.

I recommend this book for the manual therapist looking to delve deeper into practice. I like the way it is written; perfect for the beginner and the expert.

I bought this book a few years ago and kept telling myself I would read it soon--soon finally came and I am quite pleased with the substance of this book. The book is geared to someone with at least some basic knowledge of mental health and Catholic theology, but one need not be an expert at either to understand this book. As pointed out in the book there are gradients to depression and I would not advise giving this to a person who is severely depressed--this book is more suited for an individual looking to learn about depression or someone with a more moderate depression.The authors do an excellent job of removing some of the stigma or guilt often associated with depression and encourage readers to see that depression cannot be limited to one particular cause. Dr. Kheriaty addresses one issue facing many of faith and mental health issues--why can't I just pray my way out of it? The authors then go on to explain the difference between depression and spiritual issues (lukewarmness, acedia, etc). The authors distinctions between mental health issues and spiritual issues are very clear.I found the explanation of "dark night of soul" versus depression particularly enlightening as many of my own clients struggle with this distinction and often think that "God is just testing me." The authors helpfully explain, in my simplified version, that the "dark night" is more related to spirituality, whereas depression is going to affect other areas of the patient's life. The dark night is definitely a spiritual issue that requires a spiritual remedy, sacraments, prayer, etc, whereas depression is not solved spiritually due to the persons "darkened" state (biological, relational, medical illness).I also appreciated the authors encouragement to seek appropriate mental or spiritual help to be spot on. I often hear Catholics joking about the Sacrament of Confession as therapy, but one who is truly depressed has a difficult time with hope and therefore struggles to pray their way out of depression (the authors certainly do not deny God's omnipotence, but clearly explain the struggles that a depressed person faces and how much of God's greatness can be ignored because the depressed person simply cannot experience). As the authors explain spirituality is a definite help with working through depression, but it only addresses one aspect of the whole person.My only complaint with the book is the insistence that a depressed person seek the help of a psychiatrist over other mental health treatment providers. Many areas are not blessed with an abundance of psychiatrists, and/or are intimidated by the price of a single session, and need to find other mental health providers prior to seeing a psychiatrist or medical doctor for medication. I think it would have been more helpful to focus on a competent mental health care provider instead of an exclusive focus on psychiatrists. Dr. Kheriaty also rightly points out the tendency for psychiatrists to prescribe medication instead of actually offering therapy to the patient and that primary care physicians frequently do not maximize the dose.

As one who has suffered the effects of depression and anxiety for over 10 years, in addition to leading a deep prayer life, this book is truly a blessing. I have read several books on depression, some Christian and some specifically Catholic. This is by far the most excellent resource for depression I have been privileged to read.Dr. Kheriaty not only addresses the topic of depression itself, but the spiritual life as well, for man is not just a mind and a physical body, but is imbued with an immortal soul. The healing of the soul cannot be separated from the healing of body/mind.The author writes on topics including types and causes of depression, depression and the spiritual life with enlightening insights on differentiating depression from specific spiritual trials, suicide, treatments, and spiritual help with a focus on the virtue of hope.There is no clear line of demarcation between the pysche and the spirit and Dr. Kheriaty makes that clear in abundance. He stresses the importance of treating the soul along with the mind which I found quite refreshing as well as his faithfulness to the Catholic tradition.This is a book I would recommend to all spiritual directors and psychologists. I, for one, am most grateful to the author for helping me to continue my path to healing. Thank you.

This is a book that every priest should read. The chapter on suicide, in particular, provides a great deal of information and spiritual insight. I greatly appreciate how solidly -Catholic- this book is throughout. The importance of prayer, the sacraments, and the practice of the virtues is never overlooked; the philosophy is never some form of physicalist reductionism. At the same time, the book is an excellent caution against dismissing depression with the words "Just get over it," as if depression were simply voluntary. It's also very helpful that they describe the difference between depression and acedia, which has many external similarities to it.I have the audio edition of this book also and it is well recorded. That may also be a more discreet option for people who need this book. People I have recommended or lent this book to have found it very helpful. In fact, I try to keep extra copies on hand to give away. I definitely look forward to any other books from this author.

This a superb book. It is not a book just for the Roman Catholic Community but a book that is rich in guidance as to overcoming depression. It is a well thought out and planned book.This is NOT another self-help-how to cure the self on your own, presentation. It shows thatPsychological support is needed in addressing the problems of depression, but that we also have a valid reason for including our religious resources in overcoming this problem. Clearly, it is shown that religious help should be presented hand in hand for real recovery and understandingthat will resolve the problem.

I love this because if you are trying to help others learn about Cisco Unified Communication Manager this is a great item to use to have them read and paractice with. Came in handy many times that I wanted to configure things in the call manager.

I can only say when I need a book quickly and cheap there is nowhere else to go but AMAZON.com.They had this book available and with more of a discount than I could have gotten as a Cisco Gold Customer. I really appreciate how quickly I received the book too.

With Cisco Unified Communications solutions (namely Unified Communications Manager and the Unity family of products) reaching the version 8 milestone in their lifecycle, there has been a lot of information published on the subject already. I've probably got a dozen or more Cisco Press books covering these topics on my own bookcase within close reach. But this one is different. It's not just a `reference guide' that is full of information but requires you to jump around to find what you're looking for. It's not a certification study guide covering only theory and leaving the practical knowledge behind - this title covers both, and does it well. It is my current `go-to' title of choice. Let me talk about what sets this book apart from the rest.Configuring Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Unity Connection: A Step-by-Step Guide does a good job at accomplishing what Bateman has set out to do; create a configuration guide in a step-by-step, building-block approach. Walking you through each new topic, building on knowledge you have already gained from previous topics, you will walk away from this title having a solid foundation of what you need to know to successfully implement a Cisco Unified Communications solution and keep it running. He doesn't take you through the installation process itself, but covers just about everything else beyond that step necessary from a configuration standpoint when setting up a new system, as well as the daily administration activities you'll be required to perform.This is clearly not meant to be a certification guide, but I would recommend it to the network administrator new to Cisco Unified Communications and certification candidate alike; both audiences will benefit greatly from the exercises and explanations presented in this book.The author calls it `The definitive, up-to-date guide to planning, configuring, and administering Cisco call processing and voice messaging'.... I'll buy that. I would rate this book a solid 4 out of 5. I would have liked to have seen a bonus CD accompanying the title with multimedia content (I'm thinking video walkthroughs of some of the more involved processes, maybe some lecture content on the more complex theory topics); maybe in the third edition (hint, hint, nudge, nudge).

The book is intrinsically about the system administration of these Cisco products. It stresses that you should do a design phase prior to any actual installation. This should be as detailed as possible, to [try to] anticipate the phone behaviours and needs of the users. A key idea that needs to be kept in mind during this is that individual components of the system will fail, so redundancy needs to be built in at all levels above the cable that connects the device [ie. IP phone] to the rest of the network. The author remarks that the only real exception to redundancy is this single cable from the phone. Because a motivator for going to VoIP phones that have inline power is the reduced cabling needs. And users seem to accept as self-evident that if this cable breaks, then certainly the phone is disconnected.Chapter 2 discusses Communication Manager 3.3, where all services are turned off by default. Apparently, in earlier versions, some services were turned on, right out of the box. While the text does not say this explicitly, I suspect that this led to certain attack vectors that came in on some of those active default services. So live and learn, and Cisco is hence bolting down the services. What this means is that you, the sysadmin, needs to [or at least should] understand each service that you activate.The complexity in the book rises when you reach Chapter 4, on route plans and call flow. It increases in the next chapter, which is about implementing the equivalent of black and white lists for different devices. If you temporarily imagine each device to be not a phone but, say, a browser with Internet access, then the concepts of those lists are easy to grasp. But when it comes to phone devices, the implementation of the lists is rather intricate.CUC and Unity also can handle the processing of incoming calls, as evidenced in Chapter 9. Here, if you have a background in Interactive Voice Response systems, you can see similarities to what Cisco offers. But a major difference is that, as far as I can discern, speech recognition is used nowhere here. The incoming caller chooses from various options by pressing buttons.
