Since I have read much of Voltaire's writings previously I was thrilled when they had a kindle version with most of his works. Many little novels....such as "Micromegas" are for entertainment value (a french version of Swift's "Gulliver's travels" but whereas our main character goes out into space and different planets). However, there are a number of writings that are historical writings concerning the life and times of several rulers. For a study of Voltaire's writing this compilation is perfect for reference and reading. I love using this on the kindle.....I can switch between this volume and my dictionary when necessary.....and if needed any other reference material (perfect for University students or grads that are doing dissertations or papers where they need to flip back and forth between several books for citations and information. I LOVE MY KINDLE...wish I HAD IT WHEN I WAS A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY....IT IS SO GOOD TO USE and these type of books that are available in the KINDLE STORE are GREAT!!!!!
Spectacular! The tremendously influential works of the Age of Enlightenment from the pen of Voltaire in a concise edition. These are delightful and wise tales with philosophical meaning and rooted in the desire to make the world a better place to live. Stories conceived around a sharp eye, a witted tongue and a brilliant pen, all the traits of the immortal genius that was Voltaire. All to be had for less than the cost of a cup of coffee at one of the more ubiquitous establishments around the globe.
Who would dare review Voltaire? Sublime is the only word. I'm just reviewing this edition and I agree with one of the other reviewers -- on a Kindle it's hard to return from the notes to the passage you happen to be reading. But maybe I'm not used to my new Kindle Fire yet. I noticed in the plays that the character names are sometimes added to the following piece of dialogue instead of standing alone, so the reader's momentarily confused about who's speaking. Argensa could well do another proofread of the plays. But on the whole, such an enjoyable experience. I hadn't read "Zadig" before and smiled all the way through. Much more profound, and funnier, than "Candide". Merci mille fois, maître!
This is a treasure chest full of gems, precious metals, and maybe some noble gases as well. Reading Voltaire again, long after having to be frog-marched through Zadig and Candide in school, I'm struck and delighted by how supremely funny he is, without sacrificing any of his keen insight and intelligence.Those of you whose sensibilities have been honed by the likes of Stewart, Colbert, Oliver, and other luminaries of our golden age of political satire will find yourselves perfectly at home -- and your complacencies pleasurably roasted -- with Voltaire.
