Peru is an amazing place! Trekking Peru has been invaluable help as I plan an independent trip to the areas around Chachapoyas and Huaraz in Peru. I have plenty of experience with backpacking trips 6 days or longer in the U.S., but not overseas. I went with a packaged Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu hiking lodge-to-lodge a few years ago and ever since I wanted to come back to Peru again to backpack on my own, this time camping in a tent the way I'm used to. This guidebook has far and away been my most useful resource to make this dream become a reality.I have the Kindle version. By it's very nature, backpacking and camping in a tent in the mountain wilderness means planning to be flexible. It's not a place for control freaks, but it is definitely a place for people who come prepared. This is all doubly true when traveling in an unfamiliar culture. This guidebook helps me know what to expect: ways to travel by combi or taxi to the trailhead, what kinds of food I'll find if I buy local, where I can camp or sleep when my path takes me among villages and shepherds, how to be respectful, and what large and small communities have to offer.My gold standard for a hiking/backpacking guide has always been Lisa Foster's guide to Rocky Mountain National Park. Well, now I have a second favorite! Everything about this guidebook is "just right." It is superbly written, it's concise, it focuses on what's most important. Just as important, the book is warm and welcoming and the descriptions get me excited about the treks. Many blogs I found online are written by people who made a handful of trips in Peru. I trust what I read in this book far more because I know the authors aren't generalizing from just a few trips.Nothing here about Machu Picchu or the popular Inca Trail or Santa Cruz Trek. There's plenty about those elsewhere. 9 of the 30 treks are in the Cordillera Blanca mountains near Huaraz, which is a mecca for hikers, backpackers and climbers. Particularly if you want to enjoy hiking and backpacking without all the crowds of tourists, both the background sections and the treks are excellent.
I was planning a trekking trip to Peru and Daisy and Robert’s book was just what I needed. The Kunstaetters are an impressive trekking couple, having been inspired by a 400 km trek on the Inca Road to write the guidebook. They have personally trekked all the routes they write about, an impressive feat! Included is a nice introduction by Ricardo Espinosa who walked the coast of Peru and over 2000 km along the Inca Road. A Spanish translation to the introduction is a nice touch. The book is thorough with all the details of the trails and transportation to the trailheads. The lovely maps, drawn by Robert, are useful, from a regional map, to general areas, and the treks with elevations—the treks are easy to find on the maps with this system. The couple also did the impressive photography which gives one a feel of the place. The book goes beyond Machu Picchu; the country has so much more to offer, but also included are less visited treks in that popular area. We learn the basics about the history, some interesting trekking and exploring characters, and the natural history and culture of Peru. The Kunstaetter’s include valuable tips on food, where to buy things, proper etiquette, prices, and safety. There is a good resource section in the back for contacts, websites and books. Their book has been invaluable in my planning for Peru. Highly recommended!
