Praise for Alexander McCall Smith and My Italian Bulldozer:“An engaging read written in McCall Smith’s trademark wryly thoughtful style [with] mouth-watering descriptions of rural Italy.” —The Daily Mail (London) “There’s not a more charming author on the face of the Earth.” —The Seattle Times “A delightful mixture of humor, humanity, and observation. Just as at home in Italy as in Botswana, [McCall Smith] depicts the people of Tuscany in this novel with verve.” —Country Life “McCall Smith’s generous writing and dry humor, his gentleness and humanity, and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers.” —The New York Times “A vivid observer and an elegant writer.” —The Plain Dealer “A virtuoso storyteller.” —The Scotsman

I think I've read everything Alexander McCall Smith has ever published (he's so prolific that I hesitate to say "everything he's written" because I picture a half-dozen finished manuscripts sitting on his desk!) I love his writing style; he's erudite without being pedantic or inaccessible. He is so kind to his characters, and they are so varied - from the vulnerable to the hard cases. It is always with a smile that I turn the first page of a new Alexander McCall Smith book because I know I will encounter love there; this was no exception."My Italian Bulldozer" is a stand-alone novel about Paul Stuart, a man in his mid-thirties whose girlfriend has just let him for her personal trainer, Paul is a successful food and wine writer, and to help him get over his heartbreak, he takes a trip to Tuscany where hilarity (and romance) ensues. Smith has clearly spent some time in Italy, I knew it immediately from the scenes wherein Paul endeavors to rent a car. I adore Italy and I've been there many times, and a common refrain during any moment of consternation or confusion is: "It's Italy!" accompanied by a shoulder shrug. Paul thinks: "Yes this was Italy, and it seemed that unlikely - even surreal - things could happen at any moment." Indeed, it's part of the charm. So the novel is about Paul's trip to the quaint hill-top city of Montalcino, Italy, and yes, an unlikely Bulldozer figures prominently. Smith takes a few of his trademark flights of philosophical fancy, but these tangents are flourishes that only add to the enjoyment. Smith fans will not be disappointed.Warning: you will want to book a trip to Montalcino (Google the photos - I dare you!) immediately!
I chose a five star rating simply because the author of this very nice story is Alexander McCall Smith. I have yet to read one of his books that does not deserve a five-star rating. I must admit that the title of the book did not impress me. The idea of reading about a bulldozer in Italy, or anywhere for that matter, did not appeal to me at all. However, Mr. Smith never disappoints and he certainly did not disappoint with "My Italian Bulldozer." The story grabbed my attention from Page One and I did not want to put it down. It surely is a different style for Alexander McCall Smith, but that does not take away from its charming allure. It is so refreshing to read a well-constructed story that captivates my attention from page one, a story that does not lend itself to vulgarity, sex, or violence. Alexander McCall Smith is an excellent story teller, well-traveled and takes me to countries that I will only see vicariously, countries I love reading about - Africa, Scotland, Italy, England.I am curious as to the subject matter for this book. I wonder how AMS got the idea for a story where the main attraction is a bulldozer. I am wondering if Alexander was watching men at work and came up with an idea for a story. I am always curious how authors come up with an idea and write a whole book based on that idea. One word could lead to a whole book - amazing talent.I recommend "My Italian Bulldozer" highly. Thank you again, Alexander McCall Smith, for a good read.
I am sure other authors idolize McCall Smith. He is, indeed, the cream of the crop. Who but he could imagine a scenario where a famous, but personally confused, food author winds up driving a Bulldozer around Italy and makes it sound plausible? The book is character driven and each character is perfectly limned, each countryside feature one we believe we can see and each human conundrum follows the lines for human behavior. Chapter 14 offers a description of love that other authors will envy and each reader appreciate. The book says "good deeds should never be paraded by those who do them." But we reviewers can applaud them. So, good on yah, Alexander!!!
I thought the laughter came from stereotypically funny incidents.. But then the bulldozer! From then on funny is mixed with profound questions of life, family and right and wrong... amidst the beauty and smells of the Tuscan's hills... i too slowed down.. nodded a lot...
An engaging stand alone novel from McCall-Smith with frequent echoes of Botswana and Scotland characters. The author taps into some historically successful themes---when your heart is broken, go to Tuscany for rehab; great food and wine are surefire elements in grabbing and holding readers' attention; redemption is the most satisfying ending for almost any novel. For me, the best part of "My Italian Bulldozer" is its relentlessly positive outlook and its endowment of its characters--almost without exception--with a certain wisdom and insight into human behavior. The Italian setting runs a close second in appeal. This is comfort food reading that will please McCall-Smith's huge fan base and appeal to anyone else who hasn't been pulled into his other wonderful books.
This is a fun read about this guy who is always getting a bad deal but while he valiantly struggles with the rip-offs which happen to him in a foreign country,he gets to know, serioulsy ,some very nice & interesting people. This is the reason for his accidental rental of the bull-dozer instead of a car, which ,by it's slow progress demands a leisurely view of,not only the country-side,but the people, making this holiday for him,a true epic,in more ways than one.
Love his books. This one is a bit far-fetched - but it all tied together beautifully in the end and made for a good read. And I learned some interesting things about wine and property lines! I gave it a 5 for all its virtues even though it was a bit pleasantly silly as a premise. (In reviewing it, I can suddenly see a cup of bush tea balanced on the dashboard.)
