About the Author

Dr Yacoub Yusuf Al-Hijji was born in old Kuwait City in 1947, and attended the American University of Beirut. Returning to Kuwait, he joined the government groundwater department as a geologist. Furthering his studies at University College, London, he then went to the United States, attaining his M.Sc. in hydrogeology from Ohio University, and his Ed.D. from Boston University. In 1983 he joined Kuwait University as faculty member. He currently works as a consultant at the Centre for Research and Studies on Kuwait (CRSK). Dr Al-Hijji is an authority on Kuwait's rich maritime heritage, and now devotes much of his time to its study. He has written several articles and books about it, in both Arabic and English, among them The Voyage of Al-Ghazeer and The Art of Dhow Building in Kuwait.

But few of us know the Kuwait before oil: essentially a tiny, walled town called al-Qurain, surrounded by desert, bereft of natural resources, which turned to the sea and built a prospering economy based on the fruits of the Gulf and a long-distance maritime trade that extended to East Africa and the Indian subcontinent.Dr. Al-Hijji trained as a geologist specializing in water resources. He is now recognized as an expert on Kuwait's maritime history. He traces his interest to his childhood, growing up beside the Kuwait city waterfront. He spent many years researching this book - interviewing nakhodas (ship captains), merchants, mariners and shipbuilders.The author paints a vivid picture of a very different world. It was a parched environment, where life-giving supplies of fresh water had to be drawn from the Shatt al-Arab waterway and brought to Kuwait in great wooden tanks aboard even greater dhows.Before oil, jobs were hard to find. Almost all the able-bodied men in the town signed up as pearl divers, for four long summer months, harvesting oysters in the hope of recovering gem-quality pearls. Pearl-diving has been romanticized in recent years, but the author disabuses us of this notion. It was a "season in hell," he says, with divers working through the blazing heat, taking ten dives in a row without a break, continuing their shifts from daybreak to sunset, from June to September.Pearling was a pillar of the Kuwaiti economy, but when the discovery of oil brought better jobs and the imperial Asian markets for pearls dried up, the industry shriveled and died.Another pillar was the long-distance dhow trade. I just got this book last night and am halfway thru it already. It's a must read for any parent or child care worker, teacher, etc of children with ADHD (or really ANY child!)Our generation of parents and teachers and doctors are so quick to label a child as broken...instead of realize that we ALL are broken. We all have strengths and weaknesses. But when it comes to children, we are being taught to focus on their weaknesses. Instead, we need to learn to embrace their challenges while celebrating their strengths. Our differences are what makes us all special and it's what makes the world go round. We need to be building up our kids...in all of their strengths and weaknesses...and cheering them on to using these to make the world a better place!

There is nothing wrong with celebrating your child's strengths, regardless of whether they've been diagnosed with ADHD. It's the right thing to do, and this positive message is something all parents need to hear.However, expecting society to change to accommodate your child's "strengths" is unrealistic. Most schools are not about to change their curriculum to help a few kids. The needs of the many do indeed outweigh the needs of the few. The only way you'll be able to dictate how your child gets taught is to do it yourself, which most people cannot do, or pay to get your child into a private school that follows such principles. Otherwise, you're stuck with whatever your school dishes out and need to work with the system. Whether you like it or not, if your wonderfully creative child is disrupting the classroom, then it's a problem. How you and the school choose to deal with this issue is up to you, but medication isn't always suggested to make it more convenient for parents and teachers.Sometimes kids really do need medication. Somehow I doubt it.I am reading this and taking away some useful information, but I am also not blinded by Martin's overly sunny attitude.

Watching my now 7 year old struggle to learn to read has not been a celebration. Maybe her path will be one of creativity, but if she can't focus her attention on the page long enough to learn this basic skill, she's going to have a hard time in this society. I got very little out of this book.

Like most parents of ADHD children, I have spent hours researching on the Internet, reading books, talking with teachers and physicians, scheduling medical evaluations, etc. This is literally the first book that I have found that affirmed exactly what I feel in my heart. I sobbed through the first 30 pages, grateful to find that I am not alone in my perspective that my ADHD son is a great kid with a bright future! I am so exhausted by dire predictions of life-long struggles and failure associated with ADHD kids. This book outlines how ADHD kids are actually more aligned with the attributes necessary to achieve success in life than those without. They are creative, gifted in the arts, imaginative, risk-taking, and courageous. (Think Stephen Speilberg, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney.) Celebrate!ADHD encourages parents to focus on your child's strengths instead of their weaknesses. By labeling our kids as deficient and medicating them for the convenience of adults, we are destroying their natural self-worth and ambition. We don't expect ourselves to be compliant drones who excel in every field or subject, so why do we hold children to such unattainable standards? How would you feel going to work everyday in an uncomfortable work environment, where you are given incomprehensible tasks to complete, and being told that you are a failure or that "something is wrong with you"? I am actually going to send a copy of this book to my son's principal, in the hope she will remind teachers that all students are good at something and worthy of praise. BUY OR BORROW THIS BOOK...you will not regret it!

I am sufferer of ADHD (in my day they called it being "hyperactive") and having a 3 year old son with the same, it is so nice to get a positive and helpful perspective on myself and my son. So many teachers and other parents love to criticize my son without seeing the positive attributes associated with this condition. Although dealing with my son can be challenging, I would not change him. He is very musical and creative. Most entreprenuers have these same traits.

I've recently embarked on a quest to read all interesting books available about the Bataan Death March. I've plowed through at least 10 so far, all with good reviews, but this is the best so far. What I like about this one is its explanation of the Japanese soldier psyche, which explains so much of the resulting actions. Additionally, the prisoner was an artist and kept sketches, which synced well with his photos to draw me into his character. Besides all that, the book was well-researched and readable. I've lent my copy several times with the caveat that this is the best and I need it back.

This book is difficult to read. I don't mean it isn't well written, it is. It has been meticulously researched and the detail, from the descriptions of flora, fauna and topography sets the reader into the scene beautifully. The characters are real. The reader gains empathy with the protagonists and feels their pain. There comes the rub. The pain is real as well. The agony the men had to endure as captives and slaves is almost unimaginable by current day standards. I couldn't read it in one setting. I had to set it aside and cool down after a chapter or two. Then I could pick it up and start again. In the end, I put it down with deep admiration for the author. It was well done, well done indeed.

This well researched and engrossing book was written by Michael and Elizabeth Norman over a ten year period. The Normans purportedly interviewed over 400 Allies and Japanese, shedding light on the horrors of WWII in the Philippines.I've read numerous accounts of the atrocities, malice, and wanton neglect dished out to the POW's by the then conquering Japanese Army. This of course included the beheadings, bayonetting and bludgeoning of the prisoners during the infamous Bataan Death March. Also discussed was the viewpoint of the Japanese and why they didn't follow the Geneva Convention as the Allies were considered to be criminals and not POW's. The malfeasance suffered by the prisoners was built upon that faulty premise, along with race baiting teachings of the then revisionist historians; who distorted the samurai narrative of Bushido, aka "way of the warrior". The Imperial Japanese Army essentially brainwashed their recruits into becoming "human bullets" and belligerents in the making.The Normans also wrote about the "killing fields" where over 1000 Filipinos and Americans were segregated by rank and nationality, bound together in groups of 30, (with hands tied behind their backs), bayoneted and pushed over a cliff and into a ravine. This process lasted all day and night until all prisoners were considered to be dead or in their last throws of life. Remarkably two POW's survived to recant these horrors. The Japanese General who ordered these atrocities was eventually found guilty and hung for war crimes.The main character is Ben Steele, a Montana cowboy who enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the Philippines prior to the start of WWII. He survived the Bataan Death March, slave labor, hell ships and the torturous day-to-day existence under a brutal, lawless regime. Ben's plight throughout the book gives the reader someone to latch onto, and makes the experience much more palpable.This book has found a permanent home in my library. I tip my hat to Michael and Elizabeth for a great literary/historical read. Fantastic job guys!

Ben Steele was a simple rancher from mom's hometown of Roundup, MT and friend of Merrill Lee, another Bataan survivor from Roundup. For most of us it's impossible to imagine the courage and determination of Steele, Lee, and other soldiers who endured the barbaric cruelty of Japanese soldiers in World War II, men who not only survived, but eventually returned home and resumed their lives as ranchers and family men. God bless them for what they endured in the cause of freedom!

This is quite simply the best book I have read about WWII. While the book is extremely detailed about the horrors of the Bataan death march and its aftermath, it never gets bogged down in that detail. The book deals mainly with the true story of a prisoner from Montana. A young cowboy turned soldier who endures the unimaginable from the death march through various prison camps to a coal mine in Japan until the end of the war.How these men could endure and survive is a testament to their strength and perseverance. Many did not survive. I can not recommend this book enough. It had me in tears at the end.

The best book EVER written about the Batan Death March, cruelty, and POW camps. Very thorough, and I felt as though I was getting a good picture of the awful conditions in the camp, as well as getting to know some of the men that endured the march and camp life. This book was difficult to put down. I feel as though I learned a great deal about concentration/POW camps just from this one book.I will read it again, of that I am sure.

This book hits right at it; plus alot more. I was so blown away that a book could simply give a better understanding of the issue, but also break down the doubts that not any single one person could be alone. even if it isnt pronography, finding a new way to get a grasp on the healing process and to know everything is going to be ok. The truth is, God still loves us and wont stop. This book is different from the rest. nothing but high recomendations. (of course you cant go wrong with having a Fresh Prince quote either!)

Stephen Kuhn's 10 Lies is a rare book on pornography (and addiction in general) that deals with the underlying heart motivation behind porn, rather than offering rigid instructions for behavioral change. It's a shame that the performance-driven books on the topic (like the dreadful Every Man's Battle series, for example) get so much coverage.10 Lies is really about a lot more than just porn - it's about the fundamental heart issues that have implications for the entirety of your spiritual life, not just porn and addiction. Kuhn's writing is clear and to the point, and offers a lot of content to digest, in a concise (and inexpensive!) package. If you or somebody you know is struggling with porn use or addiction, then this is one book on the subject that gets it right when so many others don't.

I definitely have a problem with pornography. I've been on a journey and had many slip ups as well as failures. Stephen puts things in perspective by showing you the side you don't usually associate with pornography. He gets you to realize how much God's love is missed in our lives. In a digital age of constant media consumption we can allow things to hold the place of God's love. But the void is never truly filled - Stephen helps you to figure out how to be whole again.

This book covers subject material that is quite important to drug development scientists and those who model toxicity in animal studies. Background lesions can confound study interpretations, and I have found it useful in a few projects already. Given the high cost of this reference, though, I did expect more substance. The reference suffers two deficiencies that limit utility; perhaps these can be addressed in future editions. First, the illustrations are too small. Detail and perspective (surrounding tissue) are very important in morphology, and the small illustration size limits both. Second, more written perspective and interpretation based on published studies would be helpful in understanding what is known about the cause and incidence of such lesions, and where they may be exacerbated by xenobiotics. What's included is a good foundation but insufficient in detail. Despite these shortcomings, this is a useful though expensive reference.

This book, and Robert Whitaker's previous book, Anatomy of an Epidemic, are the two most valuable books I've read to date.I rarely bother to write reviews. I'm taking the time to write this one because I've seen firsthand how the drug companies and psychiatric profession have put ego and money first and patient care second.I finally understand why my psychiatric care these last 25 years has been not only ineffective part of the time but has resulted in what unfortunately seems to be permanent brain damage. It is too late for me, but for those who are recently diagnosed or those who have been on psych meds for only a few years there is hope if you take the time to read this book.My wife has also suffered greatly as a result of prescriptions that were inappropriate given the science available at the time. We both face the bleak prospect of living out the final third of our lives trying our best to cope with the damage psych meds have caused.If you, a family member, loved one, or friend are diagnosed with a mental illness, please read this book. Don't make the mistake my wife and I did by assuming psychiatry had our best interests at heart. Drugs are a last resort, not the first.How ironic is was to read that one of my past psychiatrists, Dr. Andrew Nierenberg, is mentioned several times in the book. I had sought out one of the best doctors in the field of bipolar to ensure my medical treatment was optimal. It was an 8 hour round trip drive to his office each month but I felt it was worth it as he was one of the "experts". I was saddened to read about his many close financial ties with the pharmaceutical industry, his defense of those relationships, and his participation in skewing study results.But that's the point of the book. Good doctors can make bad choices without understanding how those choices add up to impact the long-term wellbeing of patients.

This is a technical book but so well written and researched that anyone interested in the field of psychiatry should read it. Some of the facts the authors point out surprised even a skeptic like me. For one thing I didn't realize how brazenly psychiatric researchers manipulated data they presented to the public.The authors contend that changing the psychiatric profession from within will be difficult because psychiatrists and researchers believe they are objective and are doing what is best for patients: their self-serving biases are unconscious. I think this may be true of only some individuals. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry with numerous people who were ethical. But there were also those who believed it was okay to massage data in a way that was favorable to a study drug because it was advantageous to their careers and to the company. Questions of right and wrong were irrelevant. I strongly suspect many psychiatrists also pursue mainly their own interests and are very aware that this is what they are doing, much as they may try to hide it from others.I believe the authors' prescriptions to improve psychiatric research and practices have merit. But, given the fact that Congress and the government have been so corrupted by pharmaceutical dollars, I'm not too optimistic that there will be substantive changes. Although the authors don't go into this, many other medical fields besides psychiatry have been corrupted by drug company money. Just recently, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill (supported by Big Pharma) that would, under certain circumstances, permit individuals to be enrolled in drug trials without their consent and that would loosen the regulatory drug approval process. Combatting an industry that has this much power will not be easy.

I just finished reading this book, which is a real eye opener. It carefully tracks the way in which psychiatrists beginning around 1980 committed to a model which asserts that serious emotional suffering represents physical brain illnesses the primary treatment for which should be drugs, despite a lack of biological or genetic evidence supporting this view. It then traces the ways psychiatrists and researchers systemically distorted the evidence from drug trials to promote constantly increasing diagnoses and drugging of adults and children. This led to the end state we have today, in which the USA, with 5% of the world's population, consumes over 50% of the psychiatric drugs taken worldwide, with no improvement in outcomes or disability for people with mental illness labels.I highly recommend this book for a shocking expose of how psychiatrists have misled the public about the nature and effective treatments for severe emotional distress.

After the publication of this book, any continuation of business as usual by the APA and the associations it colludes with, such as the Mental Illness Policy Org.--one of the critics of this excellent book--is simply more evidence of the accuracy of this publication. I have read more than 40 books by a wide variety of authors on the topics addressed by Whitaker and Cosgrove, and while much of the information in this book can be found elsewhere, one of the great strengths of this book is that it brings this evidence of institutional corruption together within one up-to-date book. The material in this book is well researched and heavily documented. It is damning of the APA, Big Pharma, and, by inference, the various groups who feed off this institutional corruption, as do many consumer groups. I highly recommend it for those who seek the truth about these topics. Contrary ideologues will not like the book. For example, one of the psychiatrists whose participation in this culture of corruption, as described in Psychiatry Under the Influence, wrote a negative review of this book rather than apologize for his corrupting contributions. I, for one, would like to know where he thinks a more fair and balanced treatment of these topics will be found. It sure won't come from those with strong APA guild interests.

I am blown away by the images in this book. Seriously, I am at a loss for words. I will be giving these for gifts this winter. I have not been a prolific gift giver in recent years, but this book is unique enough and beautiful enough to meet my criteria for a nice little gift. Except that it is not so little. It measures about twelve inches square and the pages are made of thick, high quality paper. There are so many winning images in this book that it is hard to choose a favorite, but I have to say that right now my favorite is the one with the hot air balloons. Get this book, you cannot be disappointed.

Wasn't sure if I could do this again; it's been since the early 80's since I tried. Thought my hubby bought the book to drive me crazy. :) But, I looked at the back of the book, to get an idea of the shapes. Started with a one item type of pic; the large pink heart. Stuck my nose to the book and stared while pulling very slowly away...and it worked! I then looked at all the other pictures somewhat easily....except when I tried to look around or down, then I got a bit lost. I love stuff like this! You don't need drugs to have a really good time freaking out over pictures :) LOL

Who doesnâ€™t love a magic eye book. Has a cheat sheet in it to check what you are looked for. Loved these as a kid and still do as an adult. Fun coffee table book.

A terrific text when studying for inpatient OB RNC. The practice questions at the back of the book were particularly useful. This book was a more helpful study guide for me personally than the Intrapartum Modules book, in part because the practice questions were better. This book also covers more material, including newborns. I can see myself referring to this book often in my career.

I have been a nurse in several different areas, I have now found my way to L&D which is what I have always wanted to do. My boss recommended this book, and I am glad she did. It is very comprehensive, up to date on the latest practices, and explains very much the "why?" we do certain things the way we do in L&D units. Pretty much explains you what the standard of care is across the board. Some of my experienced nurses also found it very useful as a refresher and ended up buying it as well. Worth the investment.

For Labor and Delivery nurses preparing for Certification Exams (RNC-OB or RNC-EFM) this is an excellent resource. Goes into the pathophysiology of all things Perinatal nursing. Review questions were helpful, just not very many of them. This really goes into the "meat" of Obstetrics and will provide an excellent foundation for any nurse looking to go into Women's Health.

Used to study for OB-RNC certification. Book is written in a professional journal format. No nice pics to catch your attention of keep you enticed. Must have the mind set to study to get through this book.

I purchased this text to support studies for an OB certification exam. I was pleased to see practice quizzes at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately, I have found several answer errors in the practice quizzes and wish there was a way to follow-up for clarification. While these may simply be typo errors, I wonder who proofed the quizzes.

Great for teaching or learning. up to date info and standards of care. I use if for reference for legal nurse consulting and teaching nursing classes.
