UPDATE: I've recently tried 2 more recipes that are easy keepers. Creamy Tomato Soup on page 56 is rich, smooth and just plain comforting. Turkey Breast and Gravy produces tender, moist meat and delicious gravy. Be sure to check the meat with an instant read thermometer, you don't want to overcook it. Pair it with Green Bean Casserole from Slow Cooker Revolution Vol. 2 (also delicious) and you're halfway to Thanksgiving dinner.When I saw in the pre-release notes that this book had 400 recipes, I worried that it would simply be a compilation of the two Slow Cooker Revolution books, and there is plenty of overlap, as is usual with ATK books. By my rough count, 35-40% of the recipes are in one of the prior books. Some chapters contain a lot more new recipes than others. Take Dinner for Two, recipes that don't even appear in the first volume. Vol 2 has 18 recipes, only 5 of which are repeated here. So 22 of the 27 recipes in this chapter are brand new. For cooks like me, with a small family, that increases the value of this book, as it means less scaling of recipes designed for more people.The tips presented on pages 8-17 are very valuable, and may have you looking at your slow cooker in a whole new light. Cooking times have been tightened up so that most now have only a one-hour window instead of the 2 hours from the first book. Timing for chicken breasts has been reduced from 2-3 hours (SCR Vol 2) to 1-2 hours, which I think is spot on.Although it's physically larger than the SCR books, it is about the same thickness, with 388 pages. Instead of sticking to the one-recipe-per-page format of the previous volumes, there are 2-3 recipes per page, and some of the headnotes for recipes appear on the page before the recipe. But do not worry overmuch, there are no split ingredient lists, and most recipes do not span two pages. Some directions will require a page turn, but not many. There are a lot more photos than in the other ATK slow cooker books. There are also color blocks to indicate Easy/Fast Prep, Vegetarian, Light and Cook All Day recipes. These appear in the chapter ToC, the index and below the headnotes for each recipe.All in all, it's a pretty complete (as advertised) slow cooker cookbook. What most people would consider the essential recipes are duplicated from the previous books, so if you have those and are happy, this one isn't really necessary. But If you have been wondering which to get, I'd recommend this one for it's updated recipes. Having everything in one volume means you don't have to worry about chapter titles that don't track between books, as is the case with the first two books. I purchased this book at Sam's Club.

I bought this assuming that there would be overlap from the previous two slow cooker books and that is true. However, the layout, the pictures, the new recipes, etc all make this a very worthwhile purchase. My plan is to donate or sell the previous two cookbooks (along with most of my other slow cooker books) and use this instead. I love it.

I purchased this cookbook because I'm a big fan of the America's Test Kitchen TV show. I was hopeful that their book would provide the same great guide to easy and tasty meal preparation using a slow cooker.The Complete Slow Cooker: From Appetizers to Desserts in the prefect slow cooker book. It lives up to all my expectations. It offers a great variety of recipes, easy to prepare and really tasty.The East Spiced Nuts are terrific and surprisingly easy to prepare. They make a great snack and are good tossed into salads. The soups and stews are beyond delicious.Rather than just throwing everything into a slow cooker and hoping for the best, these recipes require a bit of extra preparation and time. Believe me, you'll be glad you took the time and made the effort. The results are well worth it!This great book lifts the simple slow cooker to a higher level that allows you to prepare delicious food that is really rich in flavor.Highly Recommended!

of flavor.I've used slow cookers ever since I was in college to a limited extant, but all the books I've had usually rely on either the sacrifice of quality or significant effort up front. Sacrificing quality was always something I lived with to some extent, but as a grad student or working father, I never had the time for all the prep some recipes took.Admittedly, more prep usually means better quality results, but the end result had always been that I had been worn down to about 5 recipes being all I would make in my slow-cooker, and most of those were soups or chili.So I approached this book cautiously. My wife and I do love Cooks Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen books, but our use of their recipes has been limited with the expansion of our family. Their recipes tend to be more work and have a lot of prep. And, this book doesn't appear much different, but there are a lot of nice benefits.We've now cooked 5 recipes out of the book, and they've all been great. First, the book has nice color labels on the recipes, which give you a quick idea of what you are getting into. There are recipes identified as "Easy Prep" or "All Day" for instance. The first couple of chapters provide a lot of information and tips, which I think are fantastic for giving a background into how the recipes work (typical ATK type stuff). In terms of recipe preparation, there are some that take a lot of work, but the authors also worked in short-cuts as appropriate.I know there are some who complain about the reliance on microwaves in the initial stages of a recipe. For instance, many recipes have you softening onions or garlic using oil. I guess if you are strongly against microwaves, I can see the complaint, but what a lifesaver. It's much easier to soften the onions for a few minutes in a microwave than 20 minutes on the stove-top at 6am. The microwave for this purpose is a revelation to me. Browning meat can still be a hassle, but I've gotten into the habit of doing that the night before. The other revelation is that the overall processes for many recipes are pretty consistent from recipe to recipe, and it works. This has actually allowed me to adjust recipes found elsewhere (soups, stews, etc) to work. This book works well beyond its bounds, which has made a great Indian cook book even greater. This is why I've always liked ATK books. They explain a lot, which makes it easy to adjust recipes to your liking.The only thing I would express caution about the book is their reviews and recommendations of crock-pots. This probably doesn't matter if you are reading this review (which presumes you'll read others), but their top recommended slow-cooker gets horrible reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. The book inspired us to get a slow-cooker with a timer, but we ended up buying a Hamilton Beach because despite the caution in this book, the internet suggests that the Hamilton Beach products can work just fine. We've only had the slow-cooker 2 weeks, but I'll review it once I have more to stand-by.I've never had such a great slow-cooker cookbook and will likely get rid of the others I have.
