I got this book to read and also purchased the audible version and have discovered it is the missing piece of my own education. I played the audible version several times as it goes rapid pace but was convenient. It is sad to discover that many of Carter Goodwin Woodson's fears have been and continue to be realised in the racial disparity widely noted against the black skin worldwide. Although Mr. Woodson concentrated his criticism on the American social structure of his time, one of his truisms (shortened for this review) plays out daily in today's social responses: “If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions ... and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one.” Carter G. Woodson was not fully appreciated for his contributions whether some of those were impractical or not and that is not surprising; most brilliant minds are revered posthumously (and perhaps never fully understood). As the son of a slave one must admire Mr. Woodson's capacity to rise above his circumstances as well as his ability to see the issues that plague black people with laser-like accuracy. When reading this book, the reader can only but shake their head in silent acknowledgment of the truths stated therein. Another book that won't find its way into the general / 'public' library of American literature but which should be read by anybody trying to unravel the reasons black progress appears at times to be constantly stymied.

This is not the original publication of this book! It also does not state state which version or publication it is so buyer beware. When compared to the original publication in 1933 its is not in any way similar. I would not recommend it. I would instead recommend going to your local bookstore for a real copy of Woodson work, this is a fabrication.

it's formatted like an e-book but one of my questions is is it like the first edition? That part I'm not sure of as it doesn't specify in the book or the ad. It's not a big paperback like I expected it to be but maybe that's because I expected it and it wasn't a big book to begin with. EDIT: I got a hold of the publishers of this book and this book is not abridged also IT IS TAKEN FROM THE FIRST EDITION/PUBLISHING WITH NO EDITS OR OMISSIONS .

This book could have been written as an indictment of some contemporary school districts. Carter G. Woodson had a crystal clear understanding as to how the educational system of his time period was failing to properly educate young black children. This was written during the early part of the twentieth century, barely two generations after the abolition of slavery. Everything was an uphill struggle, but most blacks knew that without a decent education, there was no way black people could advance as a group. He points out in his book the many systemic factors that lent itself to the intentional miseducation of the children of color in the public school system. A fascinating work, and still timely, considering the problems that the public school system is still having nationwide, especially in the urban areas.

Where was this book when I was going to school from 1950-62? I could not put it down once I began to read it, because it reminded me of so much of what I needed in my growth and developement was not made available to me as a young person of color growing up in a segregated society, and many of those who think that we have arrived at a color-blind point in America need to read this book, and then compare it to what is happening with us today. The author was relevent then in his revelations and in his effort to open eyes and minds to the lack of knowledge of self, and is more relevent now, because, too many educated people of color find it even harder to succeed in today's job market and the available employment opportunities. We still allow others to control almost every aspect of our lives, including what we are to learn, think, and accept from the world in which we live and the institutions which influences the minds of our children. Morover, we continue to consume more of what others produce for us than what we produce for ourselves. It is time we become producers and traders of goods and services in this nation and in our communities, and we should insist that our children be taught skills that will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. A college education means nothing if you cannot do more than just make a living, and if what you have studied is not marketable for more than teaching the same to someone else. Help someone to learn to produce something or provide a service that is needed by others in a world that is forever changing.

I gave this book four stars. The reason I gave this book a good rating, because the problems I read in this book about the mis education of the negro, still exists today. For example, black people still don't show one another respect especially if he or she has prosper in life. Black people still cannot take order from another black person for some reason but when you put a white person in charge, blacks will listen without no problems. Also black people do not have confidence in themselves and want to depend on the government ,which still make you a slave because you put in the hard work, you can accomplish anything in life. I'm a black man and I see this everyday and I'm sick of it. We don't shop we each other because we don't trust each other and blacks love to keep other blacks down instead of helping. I hope one day we can all come together but for right now, I know I sound pessimistic but it's not happening. Black people in the early centruy will be ashamed to see how the black people act today.

This is the third book in the AI Diaries series written by E. M. Foner.In this book the team of Ai in human suits are still on the planet Reservation. Reservation is populated by humans who were taken from earth in the past (Roman Judea) and who work to make handicrafts for sale on the Galactic market. This book develops the themes in the second book and investigates the effects that a team of advanced AI can have on a world.To get the most from this book you really have to have read the second one. It is self-contained but if you haven't read Human test you'll be quite lost; who are the originals, why is the archmage a dog are just some of the questions that will leave you puzzled. All of the good things of E. M. Foner's books are here. The strength of the characters, the depth of the plot and the subtle sense of humour are present and correct. As is the trick of bringing in characters from previous books to enrich the milieu. Th ending points to a fourth book and I hope that Foner writes it. This book is a very enjoyable light read without bad language but with good characters and a decent, original plot.I recommend reading all of them and look forward to the fourth.

You’ll just have to read the book and find out. And tennis balls make a very brief appearance.A good read in the series. It will be interesting to see the characters grow.One caveat- you need to read the books in order or you will be lost.

Mister Forner continues to show off his considerable skill at world building and in deftly using an ever growing cast with no one being shortchanged. Throw in that it's such likable characters in a positive setting/story and you have yet another winner from the man. If you're on the fence about continuing reading these characters' adventures, get off it and but the book. You will not regret it...

The group has moved on from Earth,with e-beth coming along ,to find outposts of people transported away from Earth at a much earlier time,and set up their observation posts lots of oops mistakes and a realization that they are being observed by a much older species!! then there is the A.I. "baby boy" to add to the crew for the next adventure!

I really enjoyed the twists and turns found in this 3rd addition to the AI Diaries. The usual cast of characters continues their information gathering for Library and have some interesting encounters along the way. The end is the final twist to the tale that comes out of no where and activated my tears.... An excellent story continues.

In my opinion, this series is not quite as good as the ambassador series which is why I have only given it 4 stars. In particular, I don't feel quite as involved with the characters.It's a well written series with some fun characters but it's not "great literature" and won't keep you awake thinking about it all night. That's OK, it isn't supposed to be. It's a good, light-hearted read and is well worth the price charged.Read the series from the beginning or this book won't make much sense to you.

Resurrection is having an mini pre-industrial boom via the AI's and the Originals. With a little of the Archmage doggie magic influence. Very fun and a little social economics. Love Foner's slant on things! Keep them coming.

The build-up to the end was so gradual that I never saw it coming. It made my ocular organs well up with saline solution. I'll need to run a self diagnostic and make some tweaks to a couple of processes. Thanks, E.M.~

Always a classic to re-read e very few years

The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the Kindle edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the Kindle one-volume edition. And the answer is: Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). More importantly, the T-o-C actually works. That's right, I can go straight to any chapter by tapping that chapter on the T-o-C (again, other e-books had a static T-o-C where no amount of tapping would take me anywhere and I had to keep flipping pages to get to the chapter I wanted). Everything else seems to be functioning without problems. Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my Kindle and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

I bought it as a gift for my best friend, and the book is absolutely gorgeous! The cover has nice fabric-like texture, the pages are white and smooth, it has lots of illustrations. The book is big and heavy, so you won't be able to carry it around with you, it's designed for home reading. Can't recommend this edition enough: either as a gift or an addition to your library, it is a great buy.

I have never read the lord of the Rings before but I have watched the movies and played the games and I loved them. However I was always confused at what was going on at times but after reading the books everything makes so much sense now. I honestly liked the books more than the movies and although they are similar the books have way more content and details in them. So if you loved the movies I would 100% suggest getting the books.Speaking of the books I got the paperback version and they are beautiful. Although they are simple and the covers are one plain color per book it still has that sense of style and simplicity. They covers and case are thick and well made. Although their were points in the books where the words were slightly faded I still has no problem reading them.I'm not even going to talk about the story since just trust me when I say its one of the best series ever. I have never read or even considered reading a series twice but I honestly think that I might read this one a second time that's how much I liked it.So if you liked the movies and aren't sure about reading the books I would say go for it and get them since you wont be disappointed. If you never watched the movies then get both them and the books:)

Review for The Lord of the Rings.I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.Pros:- The font is big and easy to read.- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.Cons:- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

I am beyond disappointed. The font is too small to read, but I thought the artwork would make up for this since I already own editions with larger font. So many beautiful pieces of art were uploaded! Where can I find this edition? I just wasted $27. None of this artwork is found in the paperback edition. Is it found in the $90 hardback edition? I’m debating if I should just send this back since I can’t even read it 😭 These books are tiny!

For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.

What can you say about a classic? I'd never read these books all the way through before, and was determined to try, despite remembering what I had read as being tedious and somewhat purple-prose-ish. I apparently remembered wrong - coming back as an adult, these are beautiful books, very well-written and of course true epic fantasy. It may be that my tastes have changed, or just that I've matured, but these will definitely be reread many times.My only issue is that with the Kindle version, the footnotes seemed to be messed up. Many of them only bring up a page number (with no link), which may be how it was in the original books, but others seem to apply to footnotes further down the page, or just not at all to the thing they're noted from. Frustrating.

I have always loved medieval sort of books and movies. But I had never seen or read any of the LOTR. Over this summer i planned on reading all of them and i have just finished them. What i can say is that these are amazing.You always hear about how much of a world J.R.R Tolkien creates but you never understand this until you read the book.The story and the characters let you fall into the midsts of the book with every turn of the page you wonder what will happen next.Also for people who haven't read or watched the movies it is amazing to watch the movies after you read the book.Best quote"One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."I only hope I can find another book to live up to the quality these did.

One main point that John brings to light - that makes a ton of sense, even though we don't really think about it - is how most people stop learning the day their formal education ends. Then what? This book vividly answers this crucial question.Three "must read" books on my recommendation list come from John Maxwell. The other two are Thinking for a Change and Failing Forward. If you have to pick just one of the three to read, go with this book as it offers many of the key concepts (how we look at and respond to failure and the importance of purposeful thinking each day) covered in the other two.

This was a good book, full of great insights, but I found it so incredibly boring to read. I always like to finish the books that I start, but I have to admit this one was rather hard, and it's not very long. I wasn't motivated at all while reading this, I felt like I was studying a textbook, "learning" how to grow as if I was going to need to pass a test on growth. But as I look back at my highlights, I find that it is pretty good info after all. Maybe it is because this is the second book in a row I read by this guy, I just couldn't take it anymore.

This is one of those books you need to own and read at least once a year. Every time I read it, I learn something different in just about every chapter. It is life changing (providing you actually go through all the steps and exercises, and don't just read over it). If you're looking for a kick in the pants for some intense personal development, this is your book!!! I've even been buying these for my team leaders and some family members too, it's that good!

I can honestly say this is the best self-improvement/growth book I have ever read. This books is helping me take action unlike any other. I cannot say much about its contents yet, as I have only completed first chapter and the author wants you to take it one chapter at a week pace, but I can assure you there is very little fluff in the book. It's packed full with to the point clear examples and sound reasoning to help you understand how you can become your best self and reach your potential. I cannot recommend enough!

Again John Maxwell has hit the ball out of the park. So many good steps for personal growth. Even if someone is not a leader of a group, this is an excellent read. The one major point that stuck with me is personal growth is not an overnight thing, it takes consistency day upon day working a growth plan. We do not plant an acorn one day and expect a mighty oak the next, it takes years.Put just a few of these principles into your daily routine and you will automatically see growth.

This is a great book. I believe most people could benefit from parts of this book (I realize no book is going to meet everyone's needs). I like this book for two simple reasons. First, Maxwell's writing is easy to read, even when I am tired. Second, this book can be read "on the spot" and within 2 minutes I have captured something useful. I can go to any page, start reading, and retain something helpful for personal development (i.e., sparks internal inspiration: "Hey, you can work on this for the week!"). For busy people who read "on the fly" - this is a very helpful and motivating book for personal growth.

I have studied human relations, communication, leadership, personality types, and personal growth for thirty years and I have never marked up and highlighted a book as much as I have this one. This is a book that can change your life. I love John Maxwell and have been a follower of him for many years. Of all his material to date,I believe this is the best so far. You can't read this book fast because it is filled with so much wisdom and personal growth principles that you have to stop and chew on them. For a network engineer, it is difficult to understand these topics in the first reading. But, the author Muhammad Afaq Khan explained it in a detailed way. We can find this information spread out all over the internet. But, this book has all that info in one place.The only problem I noticed is that there are a few topics that needs a prior understand like Orchestration, SD-WAN etc.Overall, it is an excellent book for the new CCIE R&S test takers.

Thai Fried Rice  Fresh 1 yellow onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 red chiles, seeded and finely chopped 2 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, sliced into ¼ inch slices ½ lb raw shrimp, peeled, cleaned, and halved lengthwise 2 eggs, beaten 5 cups cold cooked jasmine rice juice of 2 limes 3 cilantro sprigs, leaves picked and roughly chopped 2 spring onions, finely chopped   Spices freshly ground black pepper   Pantry 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3 tablespoons fish sauce  serves 4–6 • • • • • • • • • • Preparation 10 minutes Cooking 10 minutes  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok over medium heat and fry the onion until softened, 1–2 minutes. Add the garlic and chiles and fry for another minute until fragrant and aromatic.2. Add the sliced chicken and stir-fry briskly until the chicken starts to change color, then add the shrimp. Stir-fry briskly for 2 minutes, then add the eggs, cooking them on the upper edges of the pan so that you get a thin omelet.3. Splash in the fish sauce, then add the rice and continue to stir-fry for 3 minutes. Season with black pepper and lime juice.4. Add the cilantro and spring onions, then quickly transfer to a large serving dish.

Beautiful cookbook! Interesting recipes that I want to eat! Most importantly, there’s a beautiful photo of each recipe, so I know what the dish should look like. This is so important, especially when it comes to ethnic dishes that are new to someone. This cookbook has the most recipes that appeal to me among the 6 Thai cookbooks I looked at. The only very small complaint is that I wish every dish also had it’s Thai name includes for reference.

It's kind of hard to come by these ingredients, for ie; Cilantro ROOTS. So I had to grow Cilantro myself and then use the roots. No other stores or grocery stores sell Cilantro with the roots. Other than that, with the right ingredients - holy moly this book is awesome. Super easy too.

“What a gorgeous cookbook!” That was my first thought upon seeing this cookbook. I love the cover, and the photos inside the book are gorgeous! There is a lovely variety of recipes in this cookbook separated into chapters that make it easy to find what you’re looking for. Chapters are:Ingredients for Thai CookingMust-have Herbs & SpicesSnacks & Finger FoodsSaladsRoast, Grill & Stir-fryFish & SeafoodCurries & SoupsRice, Noodles & SidesDesserts & DrinksBasicsMenu PlannerThe menu planner is especially nice as, rather than a dry list of recipes, each menu is a row of photos of each dish on the menu.I wanted to start simple, so I decided on the Chicken Satay with Turmeric & Ginger. I was unable to find the tamarind paste, but I decided to go ahead without it. I have a serious skin sensitivity to peppers, so I double gloved and prayed. Hmmm. Not sure what happened with the peppers as I bought what I was supposed to, but there was basically no heat at all. I didn’t want to blow the back of our heads off, but I did want SOME heat. As a result of non-spicy peppers and no tamarind paste, the results were a little bland, but good. While the flavors were subtle, if you paid attention, they were nice. Let me be clear–this is NOT the recipe’s fault! I don’t know if someone mis-labled the peppers or what, but they clearly didn’t work like they should, and I’ve seen tamarind paste in the store before, but they were out and I didn’t want to wait. With the tamarind and peppers that are actually hot I think it would have been a great dish. I actually made jasmine rice substituting coconut milk for part of the water, and it was very good.Another simple, but excellent dish is the Thai Fried Rice. It calls for chicken and shrimp, but I think you can easily use one or the other by itself and still have a great dish. It’s easy to make and very delicious.There’s so much more to try in this book, but I didn’t want you to have to wait longer for a review. Take a leap into some homemade Thai food.
