This is an outstanding rebuttal of Western medical practices. Among all reviewers, the book has been well received except for the ones within the medical establishment. For the latter, the book is uncomfortable as it amounts to a well researched attack on many common practices running from vaccines to bypass surgeries. Nothing works quite as well as promoted by the medical establishment. Also, everything is more dangerous in terms of side effect than your doctor suggests.The reviewers within the medical establishment state that this book is ill informed, that the author is nearly hysterical in her over the top uninformed judgment, and that she relies on dubious and lurid sources to support her arguments.Are any of these claims valid? No, they are not. Here is why. The author does not advance opinions without backing it with hard evidence such as randomized trials and other scientific studies. The reference section at the end of the book is amazingly long, including 1,800 references to professional medical journals. This reference section is dominated by top caliber journals such as: The Lancet, British Medical Journal, Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Nutritional Medicine.Additionally, fully accredited American doctors have reached the same conclusion as Lynne McTaggart. The most recent book by such a doctor/author is the excellent "The Last Well Person" by Nortin Hadler published in 2004. What's remarkable is that Lynne McTaggart's book was published in 1996 and is still current. "The Last Well Person" confirms that all her findings and statements ring as true today as they did when she wrote this book.Taggart's last chapter amounting to her own recommendation to maintain your health make good common sense. She recommends maintaining your health through good nutrition (large dose of fruits and vegetables) lots of exercise. She recommends taking antioxidant supplements (Vit. A, Vit. C, Vit. E). She also recommends treating your doctor like you would any contractor by questioning the hows and whys of any treatments he suggests. And, double checking the performance of such proposed treatments through second and third opinions and searches on Medline. I don't think there is any open minded doctor that would disagree with this advice. And, I can tell you firsthand that this simple approach works. That's pretty much what I have done personally for the past few decades to maintain a very good health.In addition to "The Last Well Person" I recommend another related book by a doctor/author: "Should I be Tested for Cancer?" by H. Gilbert Welch. It's an excellent book that further supports Lynne McTaggart's well founded skepticism of Western medical practice. There are many more such books written by doctors. In other words, Lynne McTaggart is far from alone. And, her opinion is hopefully much closer to the mainstream than it was when she wrote this book.

This is a very useful manual for getting the proper perspective on both your doctor and the medical care you receive. It points out the gaps between diagnostic claims and their reliability in clear terminology.

It is recommended that women "prevent" breast cancer by subjecting the breasts yearly to mammography radiation, when radiation causes cancer.Men with slow growing and potentially non-life threatening prostate cancer are aggressively treated with radiation as well, when radiation has been proven to cause cancer.We are put under heavy anesthesia, inducing a unnaturally deep, deadening sleep, and have our bodies probed with metal instruments just to "prevent disease" even though we show no symptoms.We take strong drugs, often with heavy side effects, to "prevent disease", or to treat conditions that could be addressed by nutrition, supplements, emotional counceling or regular exercise.Back pain is treated by injecting steroids (heavy duty drugs with dangerous side effects) directly into the spine.We are told that women going through menopause, a natural process, are experiencing an hormonal "imbalance" that needs to be "corrected" by administering hormones in doses far greater than the body would ever produce on its own.Pregnant women are told to have a large needle inserted into the womb on a during healthy pregnancy, to verify her baby is "developing normally".Much of modern medicine is deadly overkill. This book vindicates those of us who have had the idea that many modern medical treatments and "preventions" are an invasive affront to simple common sense.

This is an older book. I gave it as a gift, but glanced through it first. Some of the things are outdated such as having mercury in your teeth fillings. Dentists haven't used mercury for quite sometime. Also, there were a few other things such as that which have changed since the book was written,. The book still has some interesting things to read about if you like this subject.

The book answers so many questions about what is good people management. At first I wasn't sure what I was going to get out of reading a book about a group of men who put themselves at risk for the sake of risk, but once I finally understood their motivations I got the real point of the book, which is to explore - among many aspects of business - what makes a good manager. Anyone who has found themselves in a position of leadership without much experience can take some simple and valuable instruction from this book. For example, what is a leader, knowing when to lead and when to be part of a team, the importance of lieutenants who know when to take command and when to give them. Important lessons about morale too - how important it is for a leader to earn the confidence of team members, and the value of keeping your team active and busy during trying times. The authors' style is engaging too, not preachy or technical.

This book is a truly enjoyable read and is very well researched and documented. What a fascinating look at an era that, to my recollection, was never covered in high school or college history classes. It is also a lesson in decision-making which, as the authors point out, is something all of us actually do all of the time. What most of us do during the course of a day may not carry life or death consequences, but consequences there always are. In my own business, I've made (hopefully) good decisions on personnel, colleagues, and purchases. Even a bad decision on a computer program or copier lease can cost hundreds of dollars or more. This book makes the reader focus on the consequences of daily decision-making.

My 5 year old son loved Jeff Weigel's comic book-styled children's books - Atomic Ace (He's Just My Dad) and Atomic Ace and the Robot Rampage, so we purchased this book as soon as it came out. Both my son and daughter adored Dragon Girl and couldn't wait to read it with me. I am a fan of graphic novels, and enjoyed the story, characters, and artwork as much as my kids did. There is action and some danger which might be too scary for kids younger than 5, and while the book is written for an older audience, it's good for all school-aged kids. It's an appropriate length, but as the story came to an end, despite my voice being a bit worn out, I wished it wasn't over already. My kids both yelled "Read it again! Can you read it again?!", etc., as soon as we finished it.As a scientist, I appreciated the main character's (Alanna) naturalist tendencies in the beginning of the story, and the introduction of another heroine in the story (Margolyn), who has dedicated her life to studying dragons and serves as a positive role model for Alanna (and my kids).As I write this, my kids' bickering means I'll have to forgo any synopsis of the story. Just get it! We will certainly keep looking for other books from this talented author/illustrator.

I didn't realize this was a comic book style story when I got it. It's a good story but a little intense for kids under 6.

Great story, excellent art, a glorious adventure. I bought it for a 9 year old boy and he loves it. Of course, I'm a good bit older and I love it too.

This was a lot of fun. Fun for all ages and genders.

I previously enjoyed it on GoComics. I am placing it on the bookshelf to share it with grandchildren and otherwise read it as my mood directs me.

My reasoning is that most fans of Flowers will already have purchased the book. I apologize in advance to those fans if I’ve erred.POV: Third person. I’m grateful for that decision, as I believe the more neutral stand that third person permits is a better fit for the wry sarcasm that I detect in the narrative.BLUSH FACTOR: There are plenty of profanities, including several “f” words. There also is slang regarding issues of activities normally occurring in the bedroom, if you get my drift. Probably, you won’t be reading this aloud to your prayer group.ADVENTURE: Yes, to wild hunting grounds of rural Minnesota with its wild fly population waiting for the great white hunter. You’ll understand this factious reference better while perusing chapter one.THE WRITING: A tongue-in-cheek look at rural life for a war vet opens this suspenseful tale of murder. The opening drips with sarcasm and is almost over-the-top. Had I not known some folks in southeast Ohio who reminded me of this mayor, but who WERE over-the-top, I might have burst out laughing. Instead, I just got this wry-looking smile…I hasten to add, though, that at some points in the book I did break into an audible chuckle. There are times when I believe you will, as well.GRAMMAR, EDiTING & SUCH: This is a first-rate production by a premier writer.CHARACTER: Anybody not familiar with Sandford’s Virgil Flowers will probably find him to feel familiar, for he is the natural-born big brother I’d have sought out when I was younger. After all, any man who loves his dog as much as Flowers loves Honus has to be a hero.SOUL: Since I live in rural North Dakota myself, and have come to know a number of folks who could well be characters in “Holy Ghost,” IExcerpt‘…decided Bilbija was right: the thing hadn’t been opened in years, and part of the problem with pushing it open was that it had been tarred shut.On the other hand, the roof had good sight lines to the places where the shooting victims had been standing. When Virgil walked around the roof, he found the second floor was built over half the structure, with the back half dropping to a single story. If someone had a short ladder—not even a stepladder but one of the three-step stools used to reach high cupboards—he could have climbed onto the back roof, then used the stool to climb to the top. Getting down would be even faster, if it had become necessary to flee. He could have gone from roof to roof with no more than a three-foot drop.If the shooter climbed up and down the back of the building, between the wall and the dumpster by the kitchen door, he might even do it unseen.Virgil put it down as a possibility. The roof didn’t show any footprints, discarded DNA-laden cigarette butts, a book of matches from a sleazy nightclub, an accidentally dropped driver’s license, or any other fictional possibilities, so he went back down the hatch and pulled it shut.“Find anything?” Bilbija asked.“A nice view, but . . . no.”“Didn’t think you would,” Bilbija said. “Say, you want a beer or a quick shot to keep you going? One if the best Virgil Flower novels, IMHO...Complexly plotted, great dialog, and very real characters.I swear to God I don't know what I'm going to do if Sandford ever retires!

Where Virgil Flowers invites his acolytes to help him establish a record in eating microwaved chicken pot pies and a luhcrative time is had by Mr.Sandford at the expense of the reader.

While not uproariously funny, this murder mystery is likely to make you smile a lot. Virgil Flowers is on hand - reluctantly, since his pregnant girlfriend is an hour away and he'd rather be with her - to lend his expertise on a peculiar matter. The local church had a visitation by the Blessed Virgin Mary and has become something of a pilgrimage shrine, lifting a fading prairie town out of its death spiral, but that isn't his concern. People are getting shot in front of the church, though, and that is what brings him to a town where there isn't a decent restaurant and he's reduced to living on frozen pot pies. There are an assortment of sub-plots, but they all tie into one another in Sandford's trademark way: with a combination of shrewd and bird-brained characters. I got a real kick out of this entry in an ongoing series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but you'll get more out of it if you read them in order and you can watch Virgil Flowers gradually move from ladies' man to settled dad-to-be.

I won't bother to rehash the synopsis... Check the book description. Here's my take:Lately, in Sandfords books, the reader knows who the killer or killers are in the 1st couple chapters and it's about Davenport or That F'n Flowers trying to track them down. I don't mind the Cat-and-Mouse books so much but I first fell for Sandford's books trying to figure out who the perpetrator(s) were. I'm more than halfway into this one and I'm still guessing. Without spoiling anything, I will say there were some questions that Virgil was trying to answer that I figured out first and that is always a treat. Call 'em mysteries within a mystery.If you've loved any of Sandford's previous works, this one won't disappoint. Frankie is a treat, Jenkins and Shrake still crack me up, and Bea Sawyer is as by the book and helpful as always. If you've never read any of the others, you don't know anything about the people I just mentioned and should check out earlier books in the series.I can say without finishing the book I already feel I got my money's worth. Can't wait for the next Prey novel.

I am a huge John Stanford fan, but I feel he has lost his touch as a writer or his publisher paid someone else to write this book under his name. Virgil did not even have Virgil’s personality. I feel I was duped into buying this book. The book made no sense. It wasn’t funny or thrilling. I was angry and disappointed when it ended.

I can't get enough of John Sandford's books. This one was really good with original ideas. It was also good to see Jenkins and Shrake again.Read this one and you will not be disappointed.

Sanford's two main characters, Lucas Davenport and Virgiul Flowers, have over the years provided hours of pleasure. No more. The 11th Flower book is sadly repetitive--plot, subplot, small town, witty repartees and a feeling that I've just been conned out my $17.95 Sanford needs a new hero, and a new line of thought. By the time I finished reading Holy Ghost, I no longer cared whether Flowers solved the crime (murders, main plot) or saw through the apparition of the Virgin Mary in a small town church (subplot.) Flowers is now engaged to be married, so even the faint amusement garnered from watching him spar with female characters is gone. I suspect the Sanford machine will keep cranking out novels. After all, what publisher would give up such a good thing? But it's sad to see a great crime writer become uninteresting.

I purchased the ebook The Elements of Style. It has the fourth edition cover, but it's actually the free Project Gutenberg 1st edition, written solely by William Strunk Jr in 1918. It is dishonest for Amazon to sell this; I called customer service and obtained a refund.

This publication of the book is sub par quality. It looks like someone found the text of the original Elements of Style online, copied and pasted it into Word, printed it, and bound it together in a cheap cover. There are even "track changes" edits throughout the book! The formatting is a mess everywhere with large unexplained spaces and gaps. This is truly an unacceptable product and should not even be sold. It is false advertising and I am returning it immediately with a complaint to Amazon.I gave it three stars so people would be more likely to read my review. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!! ISBN-13 9781537669649

Don't buy this kindle version, it's full of formatting errors. A shame to see a grammar book trashed like this. I had to ask for a refund. Look somewhere else.

I've read two different editions of this book - I borrowed the 6th? 7th? edition (the one with the blue cover that is expanded) and I own the 3rd edition (which is not expanded). Let me tell you, this slim book packs a powerful punch. I've always struggled with being concise in my writing, and this book is THE book to help you maximize your writing. It should be required in high schools everywhere.Back when I worked for a newspaper, one of my editors was trying to get a review of mine on a particular page, which meant he needed to edit a little bit out ... he came back and told me - I couldn't edit your review. Every word was essential. - YES. Thank you, Strunk & White.

White version, Fourth Edition but was actually the 1920 edition with the wrong cover. So just wanted to give potential readers of this book a head's up that if you want to buy this book on Kindle, do the "Look Inside" preview to make sure the edition matches the cover and description.

The famous, beloved version of this book is the version by *Strunk and White* (written a hundred years ago by William Strunk and – importantly – updated by E.B. Dorothy Carvello began her career in 1987 as an assistant to Ahmet Ertegun, the legendary Atlantic Records founder, and went on to become the label’s first female A&R executive. She worked for many of the biggest names in music—Morris, Azoff, Galante, Buziak, and Ienner—at Atlantic, Giant, RCA, Relativity, and Columbia.

First my disclaimer - I did promotion for Atlantic Records in the late 1970s. So I worked directly with some of these people and obviously knew of the people on top. The industry in the 70s & 80s was definitely fill with a lot of drugs, drinking and huge egos. Now that being said, the music industry back then was a multi billion $ one and I couldn't find anything on any page that implied that any top executive or company head did anything work wise. I sat in on enough private meetings, staff meetings and traveled with enough company people to know that what was written is in my strong opinion inaccurate. We partied but we sure worked also. Ms. Carvello makes everyone out to be a 100% drunk or a 100% drug addict. I won't further comment on the egos because I know that part to be true. The other part I had offense with was on multiple occasions Ms. Carvello strongly implied that no women could exist in the industry in an executive position. Again a very big inaccuracy!! I had the honor of working with Margo Knezs, Judy Libow and Andrea Ganis among others. All successful women execs in the industry. Believe me, there are much better books that give a true insight into the music industry. As far as Anything for A Hit goes, I read it out of curiosity and then filed it in the back of my closet as soon as I finished it.

Anything for a Hit reminded me a great deal of Brotopia, which deals with the rampant sexism in Silicon Valley today. It is a bluntly honest look at the big labels office culture from the 80's to 00's. It has stories on the big names from Skid Row to Mariah Carey. The best stories are with the executives no one ever heard of except in the Wall Street Journal.Carvello does not paint all men as bad. She points out a number who helped her along. She also pointed out the differences in power structures and cultures between labels. The main themes run true throughout which is the men looked out for each other, had petty squabbles, and behaved like frat boys with money more than executives in power. If this is a surprise to anyone, I wonder what world you live in.Anything for A Hit names names. It confirms some gossip of the time (much of which is forgotten) and points out the crimes we all knew were happening but couldn't prove. The chapter "Lucky Criminals" which tells how the labels screwed people out of royalties was as shocking as the rest of the book.I've been in the business for nearly 20 years in the media world. I talk to musicians and publicists not execs. This is a revealing book and long overdue. The music industry still doesn't get #metoo or understand that there are libraries of books to be written about the crude insanity we see everyday.

A very well written, interesting memoir of a woman whose professional ambition was prevented by the misogynistic music mogul who owned Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun. His outrageous narcisstic behavior, sexual perversion and lack of regard for any morals, values or scruples makes for a roller coaster ride of a book. Her honesty about sexual harassment she endured and witnessed by those in the position of power is heartrending. MeToo movement, here comes the next round.

Riveting!!! Well karma came a knocking for the music industry. Even though it might’ve taken 25 years it has arrived with Dorothy Carvello’s final drop kick to the unapologetic groins of a deviant Boys club that took the low road to hell. Ms. Carvello teaches every person that ultimately you can repave a rotten and broken road with The resilience and Unabashed truths from a thriving spirit of goodness. Unarmed in the trenches of such debauchery and deceit only to find fools gold Ms. Carvello found something worth so much more, a wonder woman in herself. This book should be given to everybody in the industry, thinking about the industry, and any hope of entering into this industry.

This book is a great read and is wildly funny. I really enjoyed the author’s sense of humor and her storytelling ability. Lots of great anecdotes about the characters in the music industry. The book is written from the perspective of an ambitious assistant who saw (and experienced) everything in the music industry in the 80’s and early 90’s.

This book is full of great stories but it is poorly written. Unfortunately the storyline is all over the place and I wasn't sure where it was going other than pointing in chapter after chapter that the industry is full of misogynistic men who are scumbags. I would have enjoyed more stories about her dealings with the bands she signed and the interactions with them and the music industry. Ms Carvello touches on her family and her mother and father but she doesn't reveal much more than a thin introduction and a few paragraphs on their influences on her. I think these pieces would have given "Anything for a Hit" much more depth.

I don't know if there is a more glowing review than to say I read this cover to cover in less than 24 hours. I've read several music industry bios but this was a perspective like no other. Dorothy provides insight into the unsavoury thing that went on. Yes other books cover the drugs, the sex; but this tells us what it was like as women who had chosen to work in this industry. A lot of things that the men in power would either not remember, or not want to share. I don't want to give anything away - but if you ever dreamed of working in A&R, or music; if you are a woman working in a man's field; if you have any doubts about #metoo; if you want to read things that are almost impossible to believe; this book is for you. Thank you Dorothy for being so bold as to share.

Not since Fred Dannon's Hitmen has anyone written something this clear eyed about the music business. The author's journey through the business, in which see appears to have met everyone of interest, is honest and intelligent and amazingly well written. Her profiles of people like Ertegun, Mottola, Morris and the rest are scorching.
