I used to be terrified of speaking in front of a group. As I’ve matured, I’m no longer terrified, but still find it uncomfortable and worse, I can’t think of anything interesting to say. If you cannot interest your audience, you’re going to lose them in about 30 seconds. After reading Magic of Impromptu Speaking, I feel more confident than ever with public speaking. Author Andrii Sedniev presents the most effective public speaking techniques from all over the world in this useful guide, including winners of speaking contests to politicians to stand-up comedians to actors. When speaking in front of an audience, inexperience is usually obvious. The methods outlined in this book eliminates the mistakes that inexperienced and nervous speakers often have. But these proven techniques don’t just apply to speaking in front of a group, but it also works with face-to-face conversations. I’m definitely not a small-talker, but I do enjoy interesting one-to-one. Getting to know these impromptu skills will help you begin conversations and build into interesting lively discussions. This is an excellent book for anyone so hate speaking to an audience or just has a bit of trouble starting conversations.
Short and easy read. The advice in this book is probably best suited for a newbie / someone with no public speaking or teaching experience. As a long-time college teacher, I found much of the advice in this book to be good, but obvious. I did find a few gems that I really liked. My favorite tip is, "When you speak in front of the audience, it's not a private conversation anymore and your goal is not to say what you really think but to give value. Be creative, avoid predictable directions and your speeches will be remembered for years."
Magic of Impromptu Speaking presents aspiring speakers with an excellent system of improving one's own natural speech as well as one's ability to interact with others, present dynamic and intriguing points of view, and command attention and respect by aweing audiences with memorable impromptu speeches, decorated with personal experience, humorous storytelling, and conflict resolution.As a veteran of impromptu speaking, myself, having competed in and won several impromptu-speaking competitions through academic Speech & Debate tournaments and the like, I must say that I found Andrii Sedniev's guide to impromptu speaking both original as well as delightfully thorough. Not only are all of the tips, advice, and step-by-step instructions meticulously described, but each is also paired with a variety of helpful examples and suggestions. This truly works wonders for advice guides and manuals, because without helpful suggestions and examples from actual experts, rules, tips, and advice fail to become anything more than general knowledge, open to imagination, and while that may work for some, I prefer specifics. This guide absolutely delivers.One of the most comforting, as well as compelling, bits of knowledge shared in this book is the fact that the "best improvisation isn't improvisation." Sedniev explains to readers that much of the magic behind impromptu speaking is simple preparedness, including practicing speeches and answers that incorporate a variety of different possibilities ahead of time so as to cover one's bases when dealing with an actual, interactive audience's questions.I also greatly enjoyed the incorporation of the PEEP approach to impromptu speaking, which stands for "Point, Explanation, Example, and Point." While much of the success of many impromptu speakers can be attributed to their incredible storytelling abilities or the recounting of personal experiences, many others, myself included, like to follow a planned guideline of speaking--making a valid point, explaining said point, providing examples, and then reinforcing the point. This structure has proven greatly beneficial in my own impromptu speeches.The greatest bit of advice, in my opinion, though, was that of how to think on your feet. While I can attest to the usefulness of many of the elements exhibited in Sedniev's system, such as positive attitude, energetic demeanor, and preparedness, I absolutely rejoiced over the section about how to think on your feet, particularly the part about stopping your internal dialogue. This has always been a major issue for me, though I have learned to overcome it. Too often when asked a question or made to speak on the spot, the analytical left brain kicks in, numbing your mind with worry, fear, and ultimately, causes you to overthink your answers. Sedniev's system suggests quickly and effectively shutting down the overly analytical left brain by latching onto the first thought and running with it. I found this advice to be the most beneficial to speakers, as fear and nerves can often get in the way.Sedniev's Magic of Impromptu Speaking far from disappoints. But for a few hitches in editing here and there, it is not only wonderfully meticulous, but is also rich with examples and thorough enough to have you on your way to becoming an incredible impromptu speaker.
There are very few books that deals with impromptu speaking in such a clear manner. More examples would definitely help but still we can revisit the book more often to gain experience with the strategies. The best ones are to use slant technique and to use the transition strategies to get back to what you want to talk irrespective of the topic posed to you. Great read. Don't miss.
Sedniev applies widely known methodologies in a condensed and swift read. It's a solid reference, but as the author clearly explains, there is simply no substitute for experiene. Deliberate application of Sedniev's methods in actual practice will make anyone a better impromptu speaker.
Quick read and very useful. Anyone is bound to pick up a useful nugget. I ended up using the 100 questions at the end for our cocktail party dinners.
As our family grows and formal get-together's make a come back, I have found myself giving more speeches than I could ever imagined giving. I don't have a problem with public speaking, in fact, I do it every single day, but trying to sounds eloquent on short notice is more challenging. Not normally a fan of self-help style books, I set out looking for more of a guide to help with those short notice, impromptu speeches when I came upon this book. The author has given us a very well written guide to makes speeches that doesn't read like a self-help book. It is more like the author is sitting down with the reader and helping them through making an impromptu speech. The author even shares many of his own tips and tricks with the reader to make that speech sound effortless. He is very genuine and knows what he is talking about. In my opinion, this book should be required reading in every college-level public speaking class, that's how useful it is. After reading this book, I am now looking forward to the six birthdays, four weddings and countless other gatherings our family has coming up.
