About the Author

Ernle Bradford was born in 1922 and died in 1986. He was a noted British historian specializing in the Mediterranean world and naval topics. Bradford was an enthusiastic sailor himself and spent almost thirty years sailing the Mediterranean, where many of his books are set. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, finishing as the first lieutenant of a destroyer. Bradford lived in Malta for a number of years. He did occasional broadcast work for the BBC, was a magazine editor, and wrote many books, including Hannibal, Paul the Traveller, Julius Caesar: The Pursuit of Power, Christopher Columbus, and The Mighty Hood.

This well done chronology simplifies the history of the only existing medieval military monastic order. Midway into the book Bradford makes very clear the transition the Knights of St. John made with The Rhodian Siege of 1522 resulting into their forced displacement to Malta at the instigation of Suleiman the Magnificent. Following this event he provides one of the best and concise accounts of the “Siege of Malta” in 1565, however, without maps of the island and Turkish force movements the unacquainted will have difficulty appreciating this great story. Having been several times to Malta and Gozo I am just starting to understand the siege on the multiple fortifications and am amazed at the conflict and its outcome. The splendor of the city of Valetta today is the direct result of the Turkish assault of 1565.Although much of Bradford's book is common knowledge for the medieval historian it is easy to read, comprehend, and very concise. However, as one reads the text many editorial errors appear especially on page 47 which become annoying. The text has no illustrations or maps which is inconvenient and hampers the understanding of the reader, especially for the reader who has not been to the places mentioned. However, the appendices in the back of the text are very helpful and particularly the military glossary is much appreciated.This is a very inspiring book of an organization originally created to minister to the infirmity of humanity that continues to this day. Its added militarization in the 12th century provides for a wonderful intriguing and unique story. This would be a more effective work with the incorporation of illustrations and I would readily volunteer to do such in a new edition.

This is a complicated compilation of the order of the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta from its origin in the eleventh century to close to the present day. It is very informative of the beginnings, in the year 1096, of the religious conflict between the crusaders of the Christian faith and people of the Moslem faith in the Mediterranean Sea region.

Read it twice and felt like I was there in Malta cheering the Knights on. So I actually went to Malta.

Great history and account of this very courageous and skillful order of Christian knights and their critical battles against the Turks. Author's style is very descriptive and readable.

An excellent history of the Hospitallers, I first became interested in them while visiting Rhodes while in the Navy Although both sides engaged in horrific actions, this is also looked at as a high moral period of time in fighting the forces of Islam (not much has changed there). While Bradford covers the many century history of the Knights of Malta, as with any book cover a wide span of history, many things are left out or given small notice. An excellent book on the siege of Malta is "The Great Seige of Malta1565' also by Bradford.

Excellent detail, and an easy read.

Bradford is a great writer. I devoured his book on the siege of Malta, and really enjoyed this history as well. He is for the most part very objective and his style is enjoyable and detailed. I think I liked his book "The Great Siege" better, but as a lover of Hospitaller history, this comes in close second.

Very well written and entertaining to an historian like myself. I don't often find books this well spoken. In view of what is going on in Europe with West vs. Middle East, I wanted some more historical background. Now, I am planning a trip to Rhodes, Cyprus and Malta, mostly because of this book. He also wrote one about the German air siege in WW II that I found very good as well.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in covering all the bases of transport, taxes, tipping, typical business hours, history, background, and a good overview of what's where, and how to get there. Often times, we'd have questions about things like poverty level, health coverage, average income, quality of water -- and found that the guide pretty much answered all of those, and more.The maps aren't super, and because of the size of the book, it made it difficult to carry. Besides, if you're asking a local for directions, you'd want a bilingual map, as the English names of cities/stations drive them crazy. (ie, Mandarin romanizations in a Cantonese city) I do give it credit for accurately pointing out the numerous obscure markets in Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as the various shops in Hong Kong City. The walking guides were surprisingly useful.The reason why I give it 4 stars is because HK is all about food and shopping, and the book came up seriously short on the food portion. (no pun intended) Despite it being only 3 months since publication (12th edition, Jan 2006) literally *every* restaurant this book recommended (of which we attempted to find) turned out to be non-existent, had changed ownership and had turned into some other shop. I attribute some of this to bad luck, but I seriously doubt the restaurants didn't *all* go out of business in the last 3 months, but rather that the information on the guide was a little outdated.The section on food is one part I really relied upon to book to help me out, and was pretty disappointed when it didn't come through for me, as the alternatives to an English guidebook aren't great. The alternatives are to ask the hotel clerk (who will recommend the hotel restaurant), or a random stranger (who will recommend his friend/family's restaurant), or read a weekly magazine about which eateries are good (which require Chinese reading skills).Despite my frugal 4 stars, this guide is considerably better than most, and is worth the small change to purchase, especially when compared to the amount of money you spent to book your vacation.

If you're looking for a book with good background information and history lessons this is the one for you. It is not the book to take to walk around the city with. It is simply too heavy. Your best bet is to just cut out the walking maps to take with you before leaving your hotel room. I liked the little walking tour of the bird market, flower market and fish market in Kowloon. As far as the restaurant recommendations are concerned...don't bother looking at the book. Most of the listings are somewhat expensive by local standard and don't offer the best food. All you have to do to find a good meal is to walk around and go to one that's packed with locals. Restaurants are everywhere and most of them open until the wee hours of the morning. There's no fear of not getting good food in Hong Kong. Go ahead, try something you can't find at home.

Disregard Amazon's reader reviews that precede this one. The earlier comments aren't based on this book at all, but were simply ported to this page from the previous edition's. The well-deserved complaints about "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou," Ninth Edition, do not apply to "Hong Kong and Macau," 10th Edition. Note that "Guangzhou" was dropped from the title.I never go on vacation somewhere without first buying the Lonely Planet travel book on the destination. So it's been with some frustration that for the last three years, the Hong Kong book has been among the weakest of the series, at least among those I've bought. But the long-awaited update has some badly needed changes and updates.The previous edition came out in January 1999, several months after Lonely Planet had released another, entirely different Hong Kong book titled simply "Hong Kong." The "Hong Kong" book was pretty skimpy, including a mere 10 pages or so on Macau. But it did have some helpful color maps at the back of the book.When "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" came out, it included some badly needed material on Macau, as well as the Chinese border cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. Unfortunately, the book also lumped in about 90 pages on Guangzhou, and another eight-page supplement on "Hong Kong Film." For 99-plus percent of the people who are visiting the Hong Kong area, these pages were only dead weight. Virtually nobody visiting Hong Kong plans to visit Guangzhou, and why should they? It's a long trip, and by the book's own admission, there's nothing there for tourists anyway.Even worse, this book was out of date from the moment it hit the streets. Both the "Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" books gave the location of the Hong Kong Museum of History as Kowloon Park. But the museum had already moved when I visited Hong Kong in November 1998, when the "Hong Kong" book had just came out. And so I was more than a little surprised that "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" repeated the same mistake in its January 1999 printing!But what *really* annoyed me was that "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" didn't have the easy-to-read, easy-to-find color maps of the earlier "Hong Kong" book. Instead, the larger book had ugly, hard-to-read black-and-white maps scattered willy-nilly throughout.This has changed under the book's all-new author, Steve Fallon. (Damian Harper does not get credit in this edition, despite what Amazon says.) Fallon has dropped the Guangzhou section and other useless padding, making the book a lot more portable. The Museum of History's current address is in there now. And the color maps from the slim "Hong Kong" book also are in the back of the new "Hong Kong and Macau." The new book still uses the hard-to-read, hard-to-find B&W maps for the border towns and Macau's islands, but that's a quibble I can live with. Other general information throughout also seems to be current.I've been looking over the new book for several days now, and overall, it seems that while the worst parts disappeared, the best stuff carried over to the new edition. For instance, I was glad to see that the map of Shenzhen still has the names of landmarks and hotels in Chinese, as well as English. Showing the Shenzhen taxi drivers the Chinese name of where you want to go is usually the only way for non-Chinese-speaking tourists to communicate their intended destination.While the new edition is a great improvement, it was at least a year overdue. Three years is a long time to have to wait for an update when so much has changed here, given the change in sovereignty in both Hong Kong and Macau. The ninth edition came out just a couple of months after the Hong Kong handover, and *before* the Macau handover, for crying out loud.I don't know if I could have honestly recommended the ninth edition of "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou," but I certainly can do so for the 10th edition of "Hong Kong and Macau." Even if you don't plan on visiting here in the immediate future, it's an interesting read.

Great resource for planning a trip to Hong Kong and Macau

I returned from HK/Macau less than a week ago where my traveling companion had this book. It is full of useful and accurate information on Hong Kong. We found a number of restaurants listed in this book and were pleasantly surprised, however, the Macau sections were next to worthless. I'm convinced that there doesn't exist **anywhere** an accurate map of Macau.We planned to follow the walking tour of Macau AND tried to, but were unable to follow the instructions - we are both engineers (MIT and former Rocket Scientist) so following directions isn't usually a problem for us.Bottom line - good for HK, not so much for Macau.I had Fodor's Hong Kong's 25 Best, 5th Edition (25 Best) and found it less useful for our 13 day trip. It would be fine for 2-3 days however. The Fodor's included a pull out map that was much better than LP provided.

Gave this one star for the book and an added one star for the practice test. On one hand this book is lacking information needed for the CLEP test. On the other hand the book gives too much information that is not a test requirement to know. Other sources of material has to be used to make up for the missing information. Luckily the missing information can be found on the internet for free. Accoutingcoach / investopedia are two great sites that fill in some but not all information needed. There is some odd ball requirements for the CLEP that must be searched for. Activity analysis is one of the odd ball terms that has to be searched for on the net that I can recall.

I found this CLEP book to be ok. It is not an easy reader unless you already have some background in the subject. I have found that studying for the CLEP can be done pretty much free. The online exams are nice and do provide you with somewhat of a starting point and individual feedback based on your answer selections and overall performance.

Great book for someone who has never down extensive accounting and great study guide for job exams!!!!!

Great books

Unbelievably, this book meant to be a primer in an endeavor as exact as accounting is full of major typos and other mistakes. The use of a "3" in formulas where a "x" (multiplication sign) was intended on pages 173 & 216 is just one of many examples. Doesn't lend any confidence to this book as adequate preparation for the CLEP test, for you shouldn't need a Cap'n Crunch decoder ring to use a study aid.

The review by "Shopping Star" from 2013 gives a skewed perspective concerning the utility ofBalla's Financial Accounting CLEP review. Balla's book presents a solid, well-organized, andreader-friendly introduction to the essentials of financial accounting. It provides the knowledgeand skills necessary to pass the CLEP examination without the need for any additional textmaterial. Since "Shopping Star's" negative review was his/her sole contribution to Amazon--no other reviews have been submitted--this may well be the product of one of Balla's competitorsin the academic marketplace. I have no connection with Balla or his publisher--I do appreciatethat he produced a review that enabled me to pass the CLEP examination without any priorknowledge of financial accounting.

Great, rhyming and accurate Spanish translation. Preserves the rhyming spirit of Dr. Seuss while helping me teach my son Spanish. I recommend purchasing this and the English version if you want to teach your child Spanish (they need the English to compare to the Spanish in order to more easily figure out what the words/concepts mean).

I love the cat in the hat in English and I am usually suspicious about translation specially to Spanish, but the rhymes and everything works really well. I love it and my 3 year old does as well. Great fun!

This is a gift for my niece and I loved how well drafted was in spanish, everything makes good sense. As a cat lover myself, and also a book worm, I loved to read it. My niece is a 5 year old cat lover and she es eager to learn how to write and read. I'm sure she will love her first book ever and will read it over and over.I think I will get her a full collection of Dr. Seuss from now on.

Jane Harper - The DryOvernight I finished Jane Harper’s novel - a story I found difficult to put down until I reached the last page. For a first novel it is outstanding. The author writes in beautiful, descriptive language and, at the same time, keeps socking the reader between the eyes with the revelations that unfold in this terrible story of a brutal family murder in an outback country town - a town that seeps with anger, bitterness, violence, oppressive heat and blow-flies.As a reader I came to feel either a strong affinity or hate/anger towards each character. It’s that kind of book. The characters are developed so well that I am still thinking about them as real people as I write this review.I appreciated the details of country life and the little things described that only people who have lived in small Australian outback towns can fully appreciate.The complexity of the story - the “whodunit?” builds almost to screaming level by the time the truth starts to emerge. Beyond solving the brutal murder of three family members, we become immersed in other powerful stories from twenty years back that could be linked with the current crime. Or are they?This is a five out of five novel for me and I’ll certainly be looking out for Jane Harper’s future novels.

It took me awhile to get into this book. The story wasn't particularly gripping, the atmosphere was beyond depressing, and the setting was my personal version of hell...dry, hot, and brown, filled with cloying desperation. Add to that the endless talk of culling/shooting animals, and it soured my stomach.Having said that, the story does pick up. I won't say it becomes the kind of book you can't put down...it's more of a "slow simmer" kind of story. I did, however, really enjoy the way the book flashes back and the reader becomes privy to the actions and conversations which happened in the past. It's an interesting tactic and it worked well.The ending isn't a huge surprise, although I will say the author comes up with enough red herrings to throw the reader off. Unfortunately, a certain something was mentioned so often throughout the story, I knew it was foreshadowing the conclusion. It's a shame it was so obvious.Overall, a worthwhile, if somewhat slow, read.3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Aaron Falk is an Australian Federal Policeman, working in the financial investigations division and lives in Melbourne.He gets a note that ends up bringing him back to the small outback farming/sheep ranching community he grew up in. His best friend from his younger years and most of the man's family have been brutally killed and it looks like his friend might have done it.There are two stories told in this book - the murders of the family and the death of another of Falk's friends when they were teenagers - and Falk was actually suspected of killing the teen.This is a very small community caught in the middle of a two year drought and scorching hot weather. It takes very little for tempers to flare.I liked this story. I do feel it was a bit bloated and would have been an even better book with about a third less pages but it was still suspenseful and I was intrigued about the details of Australia.The author did a good job telling the concurrent stories and I was actually surprised about how each story resolved itself.I highly recommend this for mystery fans or people that like to read about Australia. This is actually the first book in the Aaron Falk series and I'm now off to read book two FORCE OF NATURE.

This debut effort by Jane Harper has been lauded as nearly perfect. And critics are nearly correct. The novel is as close to perfect as one can get in terms of plotting, character, and setting. Truly, it is a wonder to read (and I DO recommend you read it!). So why 4 stars instead of 5? I'll get to that in a moment.The story is set in a small rural town in Australia (wonderfully described....feels like you are there), Federal Agent Falk returns from his job in Melbourne to his hometown for the funeral of his childhood best friend, now dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing his wife and young child (leaving their infant alive, though). Small towns usually contain small minds and judgement has been passed. It's not comfortable. So it's with considerable trepidation that Falk agrees to a request from the deceased's parents to look a little closer into the deaths. This present-day mystery is cleverly woven with the last questionable death that occurred in the community decades earlier, one that Falk was suspected of contributing to.As you may have seen from my status updates, I did NOT guess the culprit until revelation was imminent in the story. And that is a very good thing (who likes a mystery where you've known whodunit for hundreds of pages before it's revealed?). Just about everything about this novel was a very good thing. Which brings us back to my 4 stars rather than 5. I deducted one star simply because in 3 or 4 months, I probably won't remember the plot or characters. Some books - even if they aren't technically perfect - just have soul. They resonate with you. You remember them years after you turned the last page and still grab them for re-reads. The Dry just wasn't one of those books.I still recommend it (highly) because of the enjoyable experience of the actual read. And you might experience more "soul" in it than I did.
