First of all, this book is gorgeous. The photography, the design, the layout, everything... it's absolutely inspiring and would make a lovely coffee table book. The author's casual style is also inspiring and makes me want to get outside and experiment!That said, I would love a little more information and description with the recipes. None of the meat recipes have what temperature the meat should be cooked to to be consumed safely (important especially with pork and poultry) nor do they have descriptions of how to tell when it's done (ie. "juices run clear"). Most just say something along the lines of "cook until ready," which is not enough information for me or cooks without more classical training.Similarly, the recipes aren't accompanied by any kind of description, they're just presented as-is. I'd love one or two sentences describing the flavors of each dish. Many recipes have titles that allude to a fun story and I'm left wishing I knew what those stories were!That said, this book is a lovely inspirational tome and would also be great for trained chefs or home cooks who are able to fill in the holes with their own technical knowledge or experience.

This is my dream cookbook! The photos are absolutely stunning and tell a story within themselves. The recipes are so incredibly inspiring and I can’t wait to get outside and try some of them out. Regardless of whether or not you like to cook, this book is so beautiful, it’s worth having in your kitchen, camper van or on your coffee table.

I have a lot of cookbooks. A LOT! And when I say that this book is special, I mean it!Sarah and Luisa put together a stunning collection of approachable recipes. While I don't grill, camp, or consider myself to be outdoorsy at all, I suddenly want to because the book is so inspiring! Great gift for the outdoor lover! I can't wait to try out some of the recipes!

There is value to be found in this book. A lot of good information and valuable stories that have proven to be beneficial to officers all across the nation, and I'm sure that many more will continue to learn from this book on into the future. I like to take every chance I can get to learn from a veteran LEO, and appreciate the experience they have.However, this is not "the way of the warrior" or "the philosophy of law enforcement." Those are large claims to be made and the claiming of those titles for this book should not have been done. This book is one man's journey; one man's philosophy on not only law enforcement, but religion, race, sexual orientation and life as a whole.I came to learn more of the mind of those who have gone before, and I did learn a lot, but much of this book is unnecessary. Just as this author cares not for the worldviews of his fellow officers, I could not care less about his views on anything that isn't directly related to law enforcement. The title is deceptive, at best. This book holds very little warrior philosophy, a lot of data on active shooters, which is very helpful, and quite a few interesting anecdotes from the author's past.

Finished this book really fast! Loved it! The only reason I am giving it a 4 star review is because of the section "Red Pill" near the end of the book. Before this section he gives you a warning not to read it if you are in any position other than an investigator. It makes sense because he is mainly talking about the fact that being an investigator is all about finding facts and not having personal beliefs because they can interfere with your job. This makes sense but he goes on a rant essentially about how the Christian belief is false. That's fine, it's his beliefs but I didn't find it necessary to "plug" his beliefs on religion in this book (He mentions in this section that he is an Atheist now) especially because he already mentioned how it was extremely unprofessional to use your religion on the job, i.e. praying with victims, passing out church service cards, etc., which I completely agree with him there. You're a professional and your job is to serve and protect. Otherwise this book is a must have regardless!!

Bernard Schaffer is a very interesting guy. His is an outstanding writer of both fiction & non. He is a police detective. He led another life as a child actor which he tells in another essay, "BJ Schaffer is Dead" about serving his sentence as a child star on TV. As I said: one interesting guy.Here in this short essay, he tells of his journey to & some glimpses of, his life as a police officer. It is a great piece of writing & is both inspiring & honest. He tells it like it is. At least like it is for him. This is not a story of "action & adventure" (although it includes bits of both), but more just man telling about why & how he became a police officer and what it means to him. You feel it. At least I do, when I read it.I say, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have become of fan of Schaffer's fiction & felt I had to to read this. I was fortunate that it was free when I got it in the Kindle Store. It is 99 cents right now. I had not yet read any of his other work yet when I got this. I say now that I have read this, and some of his other work, I would gladly pay a buck for this essay. More, for a collection of his essays, I would gladly pay $10 (and I really enjoy reading well-written essays/articles. Especially those taken from the writer's life).It is a refreshing to read a writer who writes from his heart, while still maintaining his craft. I am sucker for good writing in almost any genre. Bernard J Schaffer is an excellent writer & storyteller, whether telling stories from his life or those he creates from whole cloth (or wherever he gets them from).Here is an excerpt from his essay "BJ Schaffer is Dead" that gives a good taste of the flavor of his writing, & is a nice segue to Way of the Warrior (it is from the last paragraph of that essay, which you can find easily using any good search engine):"Me? I'm a guy who worked at a gas station to make ends meet while I went to the Police Academy. I scrubbed toilets, worked landscaping and mopped laboratories late at night. At 34 years old, I'm a police detective who makes his living putting bad people in dark places. I'm a father to two children, and I can tell you that their love and admiration means more than the vacant adulation of the masses on any level."Not only do I believe him, I feel I learn from him, both about writing & about life. That is valuable. Check out his work.

I purchased this book to gain a better understanding of police. While no one source of info is the only valid source of info, this book provides valuable info and insight. You won't become a police expert in reading the book, but no single book will make you an expert. You will gain a larger view, see more of their street-smart world and this has value. It is worth the money buying and the time reading. Thanks Mr. Shaffer.

Kindle version has some great and up to date info (21 July 2016). His perspective on the black lives matter movement really made me think hard on what it all truly means. I am not in law enforcement, though I am a senior in college pursuing Criminal Justice so this book is a good insight as to what I want. I am also a USAF veteran, and a lot of the things he points out about people and leadership are hurdles I saw while in the Air Force. This book is a good tool for anyone who wants an lesson about leadership vs. management.

Found this to be an insightful look at real police work and for most it gives the all important mental outlook needed to survive the oppressive negativity faced by officers.

I really liked the beginning. There are some places that need to be reviewed, words are missing or out of place. Then the ending of the book was like a whole different person was writing.

My husband is a new recruit. After reading the reviews I new I had to get it for him. He said it was he was glad to have read it and was certain that over the course of his career he would read it again.

The thought of tackling Belgium without Rick Steves was daunting when we booked our flights earlier this year. Thankfully, this 1st Edition was released and available on Amazon! With overnight shipping, it arrived just 12 hours prior to boarding our flight on April 2.Rick's recommendations have accompanied me through 12 countries (and many major cities) since I started vacationing in Europe on and off since 2005. These books have NEVER ....repeat NEVER....steered me wrong. My journeys were planned using the always-reliable guidance; my travels were enhanced by information that helped me be a bolder adventurer; and my experiences were richer for the treasures revealed by entering "Through the Back Door".And, with this guide, he's done it again!

In the opinion of this frequent traveler, Rick Steves's guides are the ONLY ones you need if you're going anywhere in Europe! In the past, I've bought two or three guidebooks for the same country before I felt like I had all of the information I needed. Once I found the Rick Steves books, I have never bought another vesion of any travel guide again. The Rick Steves guides are so thorough, that the only way you could get better, more complete guidance would be to have Rick or one of his tour guides along with you.Each guide takes you through the country city by city, including what to do before you leave home, what to pack, where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. He'll tell you what sights will need advance booking or reservations. There are walking guides for cities, as well as detailed walking tours for museums, churches, and other major sights. For the history lovers, there are beautifully written sections to educate you about what you're seeing, which makes your experience measurably more meaningful. The information is so detailed that Rick tells you things like, "When exiting the front of the train station, turn to your left and walk 20 yards to the bus stop. Take bus #11 to go directly to the castle." It doesn't get any easier to plan your sightseeing than that! And of course, there are simplified city maps to help you navigate once you get there, usually marked with his suggested walking tour route.Other helpful sections include tips about money, shopping, climate, and transportation. But one of my favorite parts of Rick's books is that he tells you how to really see a place by becoming what he calls a "temporary local." In other words, don't miss the real heart of the country by seeing only the well known tourist hot spots. He tells you how the locals live and how you can have that experience, too.Finally, each book includes a list of survival phrases and words to help you communicate while you're there. As Rick says, and I can confirm, the locals will very much appreciate your attempt to use their language instead of just assuming that they speak English. Don't worry about your pronunciation - just try it!There is so much valuable information in the Rick Steves guides that I'm sure I'm leaving something out. In my opinion, they have no equal!

I used the sections on Bruges intensively, and also used the sessions on Ghent and Brussels. They were helpful, though I was sad about the omission of the "Jerusalem" church and home from the list of sites, as I would have made it my business to get there if I had known about it.Two things bothered me using the guide on the Kindle:One was the extensive section about the Museum of Torture right in the middle of the Bruges guide. I had to keep flipping through to get to the parts I needed, and I had to see this long part about torture, with some kind of picture, many times. I did not enjoy seeing it even once. I don't think these museums should be encouraged, but at any rate, why does it need so much space in the guidebook?Second thing was that on the Kindle the city maps, because they are intended to be on facing pages, are just half maps, and really not useful at all unless you are trying to navigate between two places which are due north or due south of each other.

Used Rick Steve’s book while in Belgium. I god sent. The info provide was worth its weight in gold, especially train info. We made the mistake of doing our bookings in Amsterdam. If you want to ride the Thaley make your reservations at least two weeks in adavanced, even that might not be enough. We wanted a early Thaley to Schiphol, but found out it was sold out. We took the regular train. Due to mechanical problems we had to change trains twice. Consequently we got to the air port 90 min b 4 boarding. Wanted to be at Schlphol earlier to do some duty free shopping. Order the book early, read it and plan plan plan!!!

Thick book that does a great job covering your quick need to knows in Belgium. Loved that it went over many cities and their details. Helped me yok look more into what we had time for and could do. Remember to not only use his restaurant and bar guides. Some have become touristy and there are better places around!

Fabulous as always! Thank you Rick!! Used for 3 weeks this summer. As a medically fragile traveler, this helped us decide what to do, what to spend my energy on. While not written for that purpose, it helped tremendously. Followed suggestion of ripping out just the pages for countries we were visiting. Hard for this book lover to do, but helped keep things light.

Typical Rick Steves quality guide book. We have been purchasing his European books since 1999 and they are helpful and the print size and color is easily readable. We don't pay much attention to his lodging and restaurant recommendations anymore but his descriptions of sites to see, choices of places to visit on a schedule and other basic information are very good. When we plan a trip to Europe our first purchase is his book but we always do so with other books and especially internet research.

Rick Steves is the best travel book out there. It is not even embarrassing carrying this around because you get to meet other Rick fans. My daughter and I just returned from the Netherlands and Belgium and these were constantly with us. We especially like Rick's philosophy about traveling--it's not about shopping, but about gaining experiences. His suggestions on where to eat were especially helpful. And the walking tours in each city were terrific.

This is not a book to be read immediately before or immediately after a meal.You will learn more about the logistics of removing human waste from wilderness areas than you probably cared to know.You may find yourself screaming in horror as you hurl this book as far as the walls of the bathroom will let you.You will laugh and in the process, you will learn something about whitewater rafting from the stories, the diagrams, and the glossary in the back.This is a bathroom classic. I have what has been described (by my mother) as a bathroom sense of humor, so I thought I would enjoy this book. Instead, in the approximately 30 minutes it takes to read, I was rewarded with only one small chuckle. Around the campfire, well lubricated by consciousness changing substances, some of these stories could probably be a hit. On paper they are, well, boring and sophmoric. And don't think you'll be able to read them, then tell them to your friends around the campfire -- they won't translate in that sense. You're better off just making up your own stories. If you can imagine just one instance when a relatively small amount of feces ended up on your own or someone else's flesh, you already know everything this book has to offer.

Though many of them are great technicians when it comes to performing magic, they do not "win the crowd." If you are a salesperson, teacher, minister, or anyone who speaks extemporaneously, Win the Crowd has something for you.

There are some extremely greatly tips for becoming more charismatic, being more comfortable in front of audiences and generally winning over crowds. The lull in the book came from the breathing exercises and mental routines. Everyone is different so it might work for others, but I generally take a different route to get myself calm, relaxed and ready to perform.But overall, this is a great book for any speaker to add to their arsenal...

I have no problem with an author tooting their horn a bit in the introduction, but ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BOOK? Sheesh! Steve includes some basic speaking/performing tips, but really nothing new. Plus, you have to wade through all of the self-aggrandizing stories about his "amazing" and "remarkable" effects and the famous people he's performed for. Steve, next time just take out an ad in the NY Times to tout your show.

This book was highly recommended by a fellow magician friend of mine. But as I read it I kept thinking it was not for me. The recommendations were often ridiculous. I can see that they worked for him, and perhaps a select few, but I think many other books would prove to be a better tool for public speaking.Ex. He suggests slipping a coin into a loose pocket of scores of people you meet so you get used to breaking the bubble. I can see that working for a close up magician, but fail to see the relevance to most people.I look forward to rapidly reading the rest of the book so I can give it away and forget about it.

This book combined with "Fascinate" by Sally Hogshead, just may be the 2010 "how to win friends and influence people". But it's so much more as it gets into the workings of how people decide to talk to, buy from, listen to or even associate with... well you! I always knew deep down that something was off, REALLY off, but when things are whispered in your ear from the time you are a child, and they are the only things that are whispered year after year, who asks questions? Not me! In fact, the first time my "religion" was attacked I ignored it. Almost 10 years later it was attacked again, and that time it caused tremendous upheaval. I sat there listening to it, knowing, absolutely, that it was true, but denying it anyway.It really is amazing what the human mind will go through...the extents to which it reaches...to protect itself from fear, doubt, and insecurity. By that point, I was even deeply bitter about my religion, and had been inactive for years, and yet I still denied all of it.It took me months to come around. Months of the words running through my mind again and again. Months before I admitted to myself what I'd always known. That all of it was a load of trash. That was years ago, and I'm still not over it. This really isn't the appropriate time or place, but on my blog I recently reviewed a book called Panorama that nearly had me raving from a few stray sentences about my aforementioned cult. So trust me, I get it! The truth about what you've been indoctrinated with is hard to face, and nobody wants to do it, not even me.But I also happen to know that the happiest years of my life have been the years since I was finally forced to figure out for myself what I believe, what I want, and where I want to go. This book was incredibly, PROFOUNDLY accurate. It isn't an easy read, and the concepts will likely make many people balk. However, that means little to how critical the information is, and how much it could change the entire trajectory of a life.

I think this is a great resource for those looking to develop a systematic approach to life, rather than merely taking what comes to them.

Too many people float through life, not knowing who they are or what they want, and without any action to try make something of their life. In this book I was introduced to the concepts of objective function, ideologies, and standards of evidence. I see how they can be used to understand what a person believes and why they might believe it. Although, I believe there may be some danger in tearing apart your current ideologies, to examine them, I feel the last half of the book that concentrates on changing who you are and changing your self-concepts so that you can be the best you for performing your objective function can be very useful.

A unique and fun spin on a life reference manual. Not overly idealistic - this book solicits just the right mix of deep questions and simple checklists

I thoroughly enjoyed The Pragmatist's Guide to Life. I've read through the entire book, and am now starting over from the beginning with my own notes and observations. I found the discussion of the different types of friendships, in Step 4, to be especially helpful. I'm so impressed with this book that I ordered 5 additional copies as gifts to my children and significant other. I highly recommend the book!

There aren’t any or enough organizations or materials that help people decide for themselves what they want to believe, what their values are, and what they want to achieve with their lives. This book explores all these topics and more. A must read for anyone who wants to understand who they are and better yet, who they want to be.

If you are ready to get real with yourself and answer some tough questions.... this book delivers. Shouldn’t we all take the time to ask ourselves, what we really believe and why? And then, be willing to change our minds once new information is presented. I especially appreciate that this book presents both sides to the arguments, and then let’s you decide. Let’s not go about life blindly following the person in front of us. It is time for us all to think for ourselves, decide who we are, what we stand for and then intentionally present our voices to the world. This book inspires you to do just that.

This is the best book to confront life's biggest questions. The co-authors do a brilliant job of helping the reader develop their own answers. A must-read!
