Swing is another well-crafted novel by the much-acclaimed and beloved author, Kwame Alexander.I had the opportunity to hear him speak/read a few years ago, so I think I’m automatically biased now that Alexander’s work is always fantastic.Everything about swing is interesting and unique. I freaking love quirky Walt or “Swing”...he’s a focused, lovable dweeb who’s also a dedicated friend and you want to slap him silly and hug him at the same time.Noah is also lovable and his plight of unrequited love hits close to home with almost any YA reader.I’m still so torn, though. I’m confused by the abrupt ending. I get that life often deals us blows that destroy us out of nowhere, but I also don’t get it.Hmmmmm

Noah, Walt and Sam (Samantha) have been best friends since elementary school, but ever since they got to high school, Noah hasn't been able to figure out how to tell Sam that he really likes her. No matter how much Walt (aka Swing) encourages him to take a chance, Noah struggles to express his feelings for Sam. Inspired by love letters he finds in a thrift store, Noah finally starts to put his feelings onto paper using both art and poetry. While I related to Noah, I was utterly charmed by Swing's humor and optimism. Readers will want to talk when they reach the end--be there for them, as they find their voice about the larger issues impacting our society.

Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess have done it again! He’s gotten into the mind of today’s teens and written a beautiful, real story, complete with friendship, love, struggle, and heartbreak. Although it was going to be the Beatles filmed while recording an album, ending with the finale of a wonderful, life affirming concert (Director Michael Lindsay Hogg envisioned an amphitheatre in Tunisia, possibly with a dawn start, until realising the band would still be in bed at that time and Ringo, having disliked Indian food was not keen to try Tunisian cuisine…), the result was a band disintegrating in front of the cameras, with their final concert seeing them going no further than the roof of their Savile Row Apple offices…That said, the Rooftop Concert, as it came to be, misleadingly, known (the author of this book suggests it was more a live recording session, with more than one version of some songs) is joyous and you can hear, and see, that the band are enjoying themselves. Plus, the earlier recording sessions did result in more bootlegged material than anything else in the Beatles career, so it did leave fans with some worthwhile material, to be endlessly mined and pored over.In this book, we are taken from the end of 1968, through to the rooftop performance on January 30th, 1969. There is some good detail on the formation of Apple and the purchase of the building in Savile Row, along with a brief history of the building and the area, for those who are not familiar with it. As Apple Corps went into freefall, and the band fragmented, they were obliged to try to make business ventures work. However, as the band fell apart, both Lennon and McCartney were heavily involved in their most intense romantic relationships, with Yoko Ono and Linda Eastman. Linda, who would marry Paul in March of that year, was pregnant with their first child (Paul would adopt her young daughter, Heather), while John and Yoko would also tie the knot within a couple of months of the Beatles last live appearance. Yoko’s appearances at the recording studio caused continuing tension within the band, as did Lennon’s increased use of heroin; making him often distant, uncommunicative and disinterested.From the start of filming at Twickenham studios, on January 2nd, 1969, it was clear that both the studio (cold and vast), and the stress of being constantly filmed, were not conducive to making music. The author suggests that going early in the morning may have reminded the Beatles of their early years when they commuted to work. Actually, the only Beatle who ever held a proper job for a long period, was Ringo, who did three years of an apprenticeship. George and Paul held short term jobs, but John only managed a few weeks as a labourer before being sacked, so I am not convinced that commuting was something they were too familiar with. Certainly, early mornings were not something they were that keen on either, but they all seemed initially interested in the idea of developing new material and, indeed, on the concept of a concert.It is interesting to hear from many of the people who worked on the filming, or at Apple, or who were involved in events at some point in the story (including some of the police who traipsed along to Apple after complaints about the noise, and those who were lucky enough to be around and witness the impromptu concert). However, at the start in Twickenham, with no Brian, or George Martin, to set them down to work, the Beatles retreated into oldies; procrastinating, jamming and bickering. When George walked out, John unkindly suggested replacing him with Eric Clapton (apparently, when told this later, Clapton retorted that the Beatles were far too unpleasant to each other for his liking).Things improved with a move to the basement at Apple and the intelligent suggestion, by a returned George, that Billy Preston (who they had first met in Hamburg and who was in London playing with Ray Charles) be invited along. As Lennon later admitted, a ‘guest,’ meant that everyone was on their best behaviour and things in the studio improved. Despairing of his amphitheatre venue, you sense that Michael Lindsay-Hogg was just grateful that the Beatles agreed to climb up to the roof and perform. Even at the last minute, even this was in doubt, until John took the lead and led the band out onto the chilly rooftop. The performance ended with John’s line, “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition.” Ironic, indeed, especially had he known the building had been previously owned by one of the directors of Decca – who had rejected the band back in 1962.This book is full of such nuggets. The author weaves in all the current news stories, events going on at the same time, funny comments, reminiscences and memories. The Beatles never performed together again, despite endless offers. Perhaps it is just as well but, either way, it was a great performance and they certainly did pass the audition!

This is a marvelous little book about one of the great highlights of the Beatles late career . The book is very well researched and very well written . The reader is given all the lead up and background , all the disintegration and bickering as the group fell apart but also the pride they had in being the Beatles . This rooftop concert and the album Abbey Road are the group’s last two triumphs .

I've probably read a hundred Beatle books and fewer than 10% have really stood out. This will join the list of favorites, in part because it's so tightly focused. While some might see the what-else-was-going-on-in-the-world stuff as extraneous, I'd heartily disagree. Barrell does a wonderful job of establishing context both in the big world and within the extraordinary quartet playing their very last gig together. Fifty years on, the building – now an Abercrombie for Kids store – is still recognizably where it all happened, and Barrell's writing makes it easy to imagine having been on Savile Row at lunchtime on January 30, 1969. (One small quibble: it's clear that a lot of research and fact-checking went into this book, but early on there's a reference to Senator Robert Kennedy being assassinated on June 10, 1968. The tragedy took place four days earlier than that.)

This is a good book filled lots of little details about the Get Back sessions and the events leading up to the rooftop "concert." I've read a ton of Beatle book and there was some info in here I had never read before. Seems well researched, including info gathered from first-hand accounts by people who were there at Twickenham Studios, the Apple building and studio, on the rooftop during the event, and on the street below. The only fault I had with the book was the numerous times Mr. Barrell would wander off course offering details of events that had no relevance whatsoever to the Beatles or the rooftop concert. I assume he was trying to put the events into "historical context" but to me the technique didn't work well. Perhaps citing some of those events in the prologue or first chapter might work fine, but to keep inserting them awkwardly into the middle of the Beatles story came across more as a distraction than a historical framework. I would still recommend the book however. There are enough tidbits and little-known story details here to forgive a few distractions.

I did like all the minutiae the author included as to what was going on in London around the time of the show.

Delano, who first visited Puerto Rico in 1941 as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, returned 40 years later to film again the Puerto Rican landscapes and lives he had come to love. Introduced by four brief essays in both English and Spanish by Delano and educator Arturo Morales Carrion, art historian Alan Fern and anthropologist Sidney W. Mintz, the 175 duotones collected here reflect "the ambiguous, divided situation of a country with which the North Americans have not known how to cope." But Delano's editorial eye proves implacably unimaginative, undermining the power of his photographic vision. The images are organized according to two indefatigably repeated principles: contrast (in one spread, tobacco fields of decades past abut a new housing development) and timeless constancy (another pair of photos depicts sugarcane laborers of 1941 and 1981 who are all but identical). Yet, taken individually, his pictures include honest, beautiful, persuasive portraits of farmers and their mules, exquisitely specific domestic still lifes, and poetic evocations of anonymous solitudes. They document more effectively than prose the island's transformation from an agrarian to a primarily urban culture. Heavy machines cut the surgarcane once harvested by oxen and farmers; women who strung tobacco leaves assemble electronic circuitboards; stevedores, barefooted and barechested when they hauled sacks of coffee and tobacco, now protect themselves with headgear, gloves, and safety shoes to handle manufactured goods. I am a fan of Dr. Gray, his podcast gives great advice and cuts through the BS to make sure you totally understand how the interview process works. He explains things that would keep you up at night such as, "why didn't I get an interview?"The 3 mock interviews he gives aways as audio recording is worth way more than the price of the book alone. I think if you really want to demistify the process of the Medical School interview, this is the book to check out. 2 Thumbs up.

This book has a large variety of questions that truly make you think about what your responses would be on interview day. By reading this book you are challenging yourself to dig a little deeper in to your motivation and reasoning behind becoming a doctor so that you can not only know what to say during the interview, but get to know yourself a little better. I am years away from applying to medical school, but by Reading this book I feel I am a little more prepared than others.

First off I loved the book. My one critique for whatever it's worth is that while the initial chapters offer great advice, at times the background information seemed a bit unnecessary for someone who has reached the point in the process where they are preparing for interviews. By far the most valuable sections to me were the question lists and coaching session reviews of students working on their answers. The book is well worth it just for those sections alone, and I would have liked to see even more of that kind of stuff. The book was a large element of my interview prep for my one and only interview this cycle. It helped me to feel confident in my preparation for interview day, and I think contributed to the fact I will be starting an M.D. program this July! Best of luck to all still in the hunt. You got this, and Dr. Gray's book will definitely help!

Any premed who seriously wants to get into medical school needs to read this book. It took me about three hours to read it from cover to cover, and it’s less than $20, so if you are skeptical then take the risk, you have little to lose and so, so much to gain. Dr. Gray goes through a brief background behind the interview, how to prepare beforehand, how to best present yourself during the interview, and what to do afterward. Every detail of the process is covered in a way that helps you prepare to be uniquely you in your interview and not some robot that’s following a popular script from a google search. He talks about an interview like a first date and that’s how you want to approach it – key highlight stories from your life to keep it interesting, but not scripted or regurgitated facts about yourself. My favorite part of the book is Section III, The Examples. Dr. Gray dedicates about a third of the book to transcripts from real mock interviews he's done where he asks applicants the most common interview questions, gives them feedback to their answers, and then repeats the process again. It's great to see how a very raw answer becomes more polished without losing the essence of the applicant's thoughts. I haven't seen another resource that offers such in-depth and real examples of how to respond to questions like "why do you want to be a doctor?" or "tell me about yourself" or "what's your biggest weakness?" among several others. He also includes a chapter for MMI interviews with a bunch of practice scenarios.On the first day of acceptances this year, I got accepted to an MD/MBA program at my top choice school and this book deserves a lot of credit for my acceptance. I spent most of my three interviews talking about stuff that was non-medicine related that the interviewer and I had in common. Without reading this book I wouldn’t have been able to set myself up for such relaxed, natural interviews and would have panicked if I was asked questions that were unrelated to medical school or my application. This book was the key to my success in those interviews.Again, if you’re serious about nailing your interviews and getting into medical school, buy this book. Also check out Dr. Gray’s other resources, including his other books, The Premed Years podcast, and medicalschoolhq.net. You’ll thank yourself when that acceptance letter comes.

I have been listening to Dr. Ryan's podcasts for a long time. He has the absolute best information in the entire premed world. His advice on the podcasts was one of the only reasons I was able to realize that becoming a physician as an older married man with children was possible. I am going to apply to medical schools in 2017 and purchased this book immediately to start preparing. The content is FANTASTIC!

GET THIS BOOK! Seriously, get especially it! It's great for interviews and prepping for it. Read it beforehand interviews and I would say at least a month before your first interview, you should be done with the book. That way, you could compose your answers based on questions from this book. Don't be too rehearsed but have an idea of how to answer normal interview questions. The best part of this book was the feedback Ryan gave during the mock interviews. It's what i used to prep for my interviews and it really made me see weak points when I tried presenting myself in regards to medicine to friends. Other highlights were the healthcare questions and ethical questions. It's great to see the wide gamut of question Dr. Gray puts into the book and you'll surely benefit. Again, an amazing book! :)

Dr. Gray works incredibly hard to fill an information void for those on the premed path in various different formats. I found his podcasts when searching for MCAT prep tips. I rated this only as 4 stars simply due to the heavy overlap with the information from his podcasts regarding the interview. I think the information is all great; it just won't all be new to you if you are a regular listener. Regardless, I am still quite happy with the book because of the examples given and the feedback provided to each student about their answers. Additionally, there were several times that I came across interview questions that I had never considered before. I am confident that this book, along with the podcasts, have helped me tremendously along my premed journey. Buy this book; you won't be sorry.
