Crystal M. Fleming, PhD, is a writer and sociologist who researches racism in the United States and abroad. She earned degrees from Wellesley College and Harvard University and is associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at Stony Brook University. Fleming writes about race, sexuality, and politics for publications including The Root, Black Agenda Report, Vox, and Everyday Feminism, and she has tens of thousands of followers on social media. She is the author of Resurrecting Slavery: Racial Legacies and White Supremacy in France.

From the very beginning, this book will draw you in and have you keep turning the pages. Dr. Fleming is able to use her expertise as a race scholar to bring to a larger audience (outside of her classroom and academia) concepts and heavily researched facts about racism that are never taught unless you've taken a course on race. Also, this book is definitely not "dry", it's very lively which has much to do with the unique voice of Dr. Fleming who is able to weave in humor. I would highly recommend this book!
The 3 stars is not a rating of the content of the book, but rather that the Kindle edition is missing pages. I'm only up to page 10 and I've come across 3 blank pages. Sheesh.
Great book. Perfect combination of historical context, personal experience, and humor.
Fleming’s does an amazing job at giving up a well rounded comprehensive study of race. She tackles it from all perspective. We see how institutional racism functions as well as racism to oppressed people of color. Best of all she addresses the fallacy’s of race and debunks then beautifully. She’s blunt, to the point, and passionate about making the general public literate on Race.
A great start to understanding race. The conversation should be had by all. The terms given in this book will inevitably force you to think critically and you personal and social experiences. If you want to be a better humanitarian, read this. If you want to learn, read this. If you want to challenge, read this.

I honestly didn't know what to expect from a book with a bright cover coupled with a slightly inflammatory title, but I knew it was going to be interesting. I didn't expect to get fully sucked into Dr. Fleming's accessible yet well-written language and simply-illustrated examples let alone learn so much I didn't know. The hard part is holding this book on the subway and feeling the stares, from whites, blacks, asians, anyone. A woman came up to my on the train and asked to take a photo of the book, and I truly hope she ran right out and checked it out of the library or ordered it on Amazon.I feel like this is my door to critical race theory, which, as a Hispanic woman living in New York, I know embarrassingly literal about. I was raised similarly to Dr. Fleming, surrounded by wealthy white children at my Catholic school that featured a whopping 2 black kids and 2 Hispanic/Latina kids. My mother didn't want me to speak Spanish, or have any accent, or do anything that would other me to the white kids; she wanted me to be "successful." I realize now that she left me ill-equipped as an adult to wrangle the feelings of not belonging, of navigating a world that was designed to keep me (a woman, Hispanic) at a lower level. This book is a great start, that left me looking at my own ignorance in thoughts, attitudes, and stereotypes as well as a little therapeutic guilt.I'm going to be reading a lot of the people mentioned in the book to begin my slightly late education on systemic racial inequality and I truly hope a LOT of other people use this book to do so, as well. Especially white people. I saw a couple of white girls laughing at the book title on the train as I read, and I wanted to hand it to them straight up and say, you CLEARLY need to check yourselves and read this.Be open. Know that you're not perfect and you don't (and will never) know everything or experience a fraction of the life experiences that other do. Listen to them. Listen to them. LISTEN TO THEM! Learn something and be a better person.
The biggest problem with Fleming’s book is that she screams too much.Indeed, all the way through.How can you disagree with her base point: that we live in a systemically racist society, one in which people of color are routinely denigrated and put at disadvantage? The base problem isn’t overtly racist behavior. It’s a system of beliefs, attitudes and laws that put blacks and other people of color at economic, judicial and social disadvantage: the chance of their catching up with whites is slim to none unless we dismantle the system as it is. (Which won’t happen.)Add to that being a woman. And then a gay woman. And then lesbian and you have ample reason to feel angry. How could you not? Our system puts ALL African-Americans behind the eight ball and does infinitely worse to people who lie in the intersections of our prejudices – think “intersectionality†theory a la black/feminist/gay/trans sociology—at once black, woman and lesbian or bisexual or trans.That’s the good part of this book. We need a wakeup call and genteel doesn’t cut it. But now to the bad parts.In her anger or indignation, Fleming doesn’t discriminate. She’s not into nuances or understanding of why people compromise, bend their message. Thus Obama is just as bad as Trump, and so is Hillary. Trump’s awful but Obama and Hillary bend too much, are too much in hostage to the capitalist, neoliberal mindset that enslaves or demeans our non-white citizens. The problem is that when you paint everything you oppose as equally bad, it’s not clear where the gray paths lie that lead out of it. By the excess of her indignation, ‘Johnny One Note’ Fleming undermines her own message. Which is a good one.
