While the stories are wonderful as always, I bought this volume based onthe comment "that the illustrations had a lovely watercolor like effect". I guess I just don't see shades of gray as watercolor.I do appreciate the masters of black and white illustration, but children really do not. This is the last book I buy that is not better identified as having black and white, color or both illustrations. What is inside the book should be made aware to the buyer. Otherwise the savings to be had and the fun of the online hunt become moot, when opening the volume in hand at a bookstore will answer all your questions. I LOVE those sellers who are open and honest enough to describe their books in detail down to the number of illustrations, including how many are in black and white or color. I will buy from them even if their price is higher. Showing a cover or illustrative example is also a nice selling point.

Over the years I have enjoyed many HCA fairy tales, particularlythose which are not too tragic and appear as beautifully-illustrated picture books. But I must admit to being disappointed by this Harper anthology which is not all inclusive). The tales vary in length from rather long to absurdly short. Despite the author's occasional subtle humor he intrudes too much of himself into many tales, as if readers were really interested in hearing about the actual storyteller. One wonders if he were trying to curry favor with royal patronage at times. Some tales are brutal or grisly; others seem legitimate pleas for social reform. His favorite themes for general moralizing depict the dangers of excessive: greed, violence, and vanity. Was HCS trying to instruct or entertain his young readers?

I found this book to be not only entertaining as a story book, but also very helpful to my profession. As a children's theater director in the planning stages of a production of 'The Little Mermaid', I had been trying to find a copy of the story in its original form, and could only find rewritten and sugarcoated versions of this classic. This book had exactly what I was looking for. The stories in this book are true to how Hans Christian Andersen had written them, but like most fairy tales, they don't always have a happy ending. I suggest this book to older children or to adults who liked these stories as a child. This book may not be appropriate if you are looking for bedtime stories for very young children, but as a reference tool, it's superb. The type-face is large enough to be read easily and the watercolor-style illustrations are beautiful.

This is a funny, witty and charming book about a teenager and her three pre-teen sisters, Diamond, Shelia, Crystal, and Felicity. This book is ideal for children ages 10-15 years because it provides some stories that they can relate to; from their relationships with their friends and families and the ups and downs of school life, to all of the problems that they have that no one else seems to understand or care about. This book was started initially by the girls’ mom because she wanted them to stop complaining and instead to channel their energies by journaling their thoughts. What is interesting about this book is that you will learn a lot about the minds of children, especially girls, during their pre-teen and teenage years.During our teenage and pre-teen years, we tend to believe that no one understands us. And the problems that we have only exist and happen to us. We operate in the “I can't do anything but my friends can” and the “Woe is me" continual cycle, but life continues to evolve, and later we discover that, actually, it wasn't so bad after all. Their journey? just living life and surviving. As a mother, I understand the struggle, as it's referred to. I definitely read "The Struggle: Mom and the Summertime Blues" and looked forward to reading this one. First, it's multi-authored, with each one having her own writing style and story to tell. It's wonderfully put together, and the writing for all, is great. They each write well, and you can tell the different styles and who is telling what story, but it works for this. I enjoyed reading this from beginning to end, and a book that makes you nod your head, and laugh out loud because of its humor or relatability, is one you need to read. Mom writes "My goal was to get a better idea about the girls and their feelings." and I think, she got more than she realized she would. And so did we all. A great read.

This is not the normal kind of book I review. For one thing, it's not a novel. Well, not really. The first book in the "series", Mom and the Summertime Blues, was a summer holiday project Patrice Smith assigned her four daughters so they wouldn't get bored (click here to read my review). This is the follow-on, written over the course of a school year. While the names have been changed, I have no doubt all these events actually occurred. This makes The Struggle more memoir than fiction.Four sisters, two parents, and one bathroom. I can see The Struggle! But that's not all the book talks about. Each of the four sisters contributes three chapters, one from the beginning of the school year, one from the middle, and one from their summer trip. Mom starts with an apology, and wraps up loose ends to finish.I loved The Struggle. I know it's meant for middle grade and younger young adult reader, but I'd also recommend it toe homeschooling parents looking for ideas for school (or holiday) projects. I suspect there is a large market of grandparents who would love a real printed book by their grandchildren. Amazon CreateSpace and other Print on Demand printers means such an undertaking doesn't have to cost a lot of money.I'd also recommend The Struggle to those writing for a middle grade or young adult audience because of the insight it offers into the way modern pre-teen and girls think. Part of me wants to know if the whole project is Patrice Smith's sneaky plan to get to know her daughters better ... or maybe not:"I must say, my mom has done really well with the manipulating of her kids to eat the way she wants them to. She should write a book. Wait, what did I just say?"Parts made me laugh out loud:"My teacher makes coffee at the same time every morning. Nothing happens until she has some coffee in her hands. If you are smart, you stay out of her way until she has had at least one cup."I couldn't possibly comment. Other parts reminded me how fast trends move on:"My mom says by the time this book is published, I won't want a fidget spinner anymore and people willl no longer be excited by them, but I doubt it."I suspect Mom was right. Big surprise.The book also includes discussion questions (with thorny questions such as "Why do parents say No?"), and a word list, including the words that some younger readers might not know or understand (like vegan and chia).Thanks to Patrice Smith for providing a free ebook for review. I'll look forward to reading the next family project!

This book was delightful and entertaining as well. Especially if you like listening to kids tell about their lives. I like it because it’s not just a story, but life itself. Speaking their minds about anything random that pops in it as well as telling about their actual experiences at the same time.I think it’s a good book for 8-16 year olds as they can relate to the issues and probably feel the same way, but never say it or express themselves in a journal or book and definitely don’t put it out there for the world to see.You may be cramped in that bathroom, but you’re learning wonderful lessons and becoming brave in your endeavors. Struggles always make us stronger.

I was amused and glued. It was a little challenging to put this book down! It is a terrific book for female siblings to read and connect. As a mother who raised only one child, I was intrigued with this project by one of the authors, Patrice, the mother who also who coordinated,compiled and published this book. I think it was a clever way to give her girls an outlet to voice their opinions, concerns, and stories as well as document something for posterity. In the back of the book, there is a guide for group leaders to use for discussions about a variety of related topics as well as a list of vocabulary words introduced. What can you expect? This is a light and breezy romp through the lives of four young sisters. It is a humorous portrayal written by the girls themselves and with a conclusion by Mom. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a child between the ages of 8-14. Written by Patrice Smith's four incredible daughters - aged 9-14 - this book is a stellar example of what ambitious, honest, and intelligent young ladies can achieve... especially those of African-American descent. These girls are hilarious and I made sure to have my 10 year old niece read this over her Thanksgiving break. It was so refreshing to see four highly precocious and articulate young princesses express their views on such things we take for granted like: school, peer pressure, sibling rivalry, and even the hassles of missing your flight while trying to vacation. Buy this book - you will NOT regret your purchase.

The Struggle: 4 Girls & 1 Bathroom is one of those books that make you laugh the entire way through because at least one part of each story, as told by a different sister (and mom), somehow manages to humorously remind you of your own life and the life of your kids. (Phew! Glad it's not just me.) I let my 15-year old daughter read it and she enjoyed it as well. An easy-to-read well written story that every girl will love.There are more books in this series that I will definitely read!

Like I said, it cost a lot, but the text is really good. The book goes into good detail and it has been my pub of choice.

This textbook updates the old Schweizer Helicopter Pilot Manual, but is not an upgrade. The HPM was perfect; the HPT is glossy and colorful, which is more about marketing than substance. Even though the contents are almost exactly the same as before, I actually have a much harder time reading the HPT than the HPM it replaced, because now the pictures distract from the words. Somehow this (and a few new additions--Magnus Effect, GPS...) is supposed to justify doubling the old price? I'd like to see Jeppesen go back to the old style, unflashy, well-written, relatively affordable textbook, and leave the glossy picture books in the children's section.

I first read this book to my 6th grade class in 1963. They loved it! I have recommended it to several reading groups. Jean Pierre Hallet made a life long impression on me with his autobiography.

Finishes out my collection of his books.

I truly believe this book should be included in the teaching of black history, even though it is written as an autobiaraphy.

Jean-Pierre Hallet was an amazing man and larger then life adventurer. He confronted the realities of life in the Belgian Congo in the 1950s and 60s with courage, fascination and reforming zeal. He tells his story with remarkable frankness to the point where there many occasions that I wondered whether this was all for real. He confronted racist colonial administrators, suspicious revolutionaries and leopards with the same steely gaze and sang froid. He earned the trust of local communities who had experienced the roughest treatment of colonialists, but who respected his deep humanity and courage. This simply extra-ordinary book will remain in my mind for a long, long time.

The exploits of this man were almost superhuman. His ability to step inside the heads of tribesmen and a wide variety of animals is astounding and insightful. He provides insight into African mindsets and culture I'm still processing. I'd call this a must read if you are interested in exceptional exploits or wish for insight into African cultures.

This is an absolutely knockout true-life adventure in Africa. Jean-Pierre Hallet tells of 12 action-packed years among the tribes of Africa. He became blood-brother to the tall "Watusi" and the warrior Masai, joined the Bwane Secret Society, lived among cannibals, and went on to share the life of the Congo Pygmies. Hallet was taught the art of killing a lion with a spear by the Masai. Does he succeed? You'll have to read the book to find out. One of the great African adventure books told by a man who lived an incredible life. First Hardcover version was 1964.

This book will teach a man everything he needs to know about wrestling. He covers only the wrestling/grappling part of fighting but he does it extremely well. He gives you lots of details and descriptions about every move. I am really enjoying this book and learning lots of new things about fighting MMA but also about fighting period. He focuses on Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling techniques. When it comes to wrestling as a martial art there are two names that come to mind for me. Dan "The Beast" Severn and Randy "The Natural" Couture. Jesus is the solution and God bless you :)

At his best not many could beat him! I actually had the pleasure of wrestling Randy at the 93 US Nationals. I lost badly.Very nice and technical book!

Some people say that Randy's record is not that good, true, they don't know who he has fight in that not to good record. He fought almost all the best fighters in the world, few of his losses are againts the best in the worlds, too, such Ricco Rodriguez, Josh Barnett (two naturally bigger guys with great skill sets), Chuck Liddell (twice but won once!), Vitor Belfort (due to a cut and he even won twice!), Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (two of current best 5 heavyweights in the world on their early thirties, Randy was 45-46 when he fought them and still give them hell before his losses ;p )He's one of the most accomplished wrestler (if not the most) in MMA arenas. His wrestling skills are way up there for his body size, especially on his age againts all odds!! One of the most beloved UFC champion, the only guy who has won 5 titles in UFC (3 times heavyweight and 2 times light heavyweight), is called Captain America and always up to any challenges.His greco roman wrestling skills are superior and his freestyle wrestling skills are pretty elite, too. His boxing skills and heart, of course, helps a lot in his fights, too but he mainly uses his superior wrestling skills to adjust the distance, cut the angles, using great leverage, power and explosiveness then mixing them up with all his boxing skills and heart as big as a lion.This book is totally worth more than the price you pay around Amazon's. Just like the title "Wrestling for Fighting" , He teaches you mainly about the fundamentals of the wrestling technics and tips then he slowly shows you how to use them in fighting, particularly in MMA sport. The lessons are precious, the quality of the book and explanations are crystal clear as other Victory Belt, Cordoza/ Krauss's books. It's great for anyone seriously want to learn about wrestling and how to use them in MMA arenas. In wrestling area, I personally trust Randy the most to learn since he successfully apply them over and over again in the cage. In judo area (throws, pins and submission), I personally recommend Karo Parysian book, in striking area, especially striking positioning, Anderson Silva or Lyoto Machida, in BJJ, BJ Penn, Royler Gracie or Rodrigo Gracie, Fedor is the best heavyweight ever and I respect him the most but the book by itself is okay.Thanks
