With Cisco Unified Communications solutions (namely Unified Communications Manager and the Unity family of products) reaching the version 8 milestone in their lifecycle, there has been a lot of information published on the subject already. I've probably got a dozen or more Cisco Press books covering these topics on my own bookcase within close reach. But this one is different. It's not just a `reference guide' that is full of information but requires you to jump around to find what you're looking for. It's not a certification study guide covering only theory and leaving the practical knowledge behind - this title covers both, and does it well. It is my current `go-to' title of choice. Let me talk about what sets this book apart from the rest.Configuring Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Unity Connection: A Step-by-Step Guide does a good job at accomplishing what Bateman has set out to do; create a configuration guide in a step-by-step, building-block approach. Walking you through each new topic, building on knowledge you have already gained from previous topics, you will walk away from this title having a solid foundation of what you need to know to successfully implement a Cisco Unified Communications solution and keep it running. He doesn't take you through the installation process itself, but covers just about everything else beyond that step necessary from a configuration standpoint when setting up a new system, as well as the daily administration activities you'll be required to perform.This is clearly not meant to be a certification guide, but I would recommend it to the network administrator new to Cisco Unified Communications and certification candidate alike; both audiences will benefit greatly from the exercises and explanations presented in this book.The author calls it `The definitive, up-to-date guide to planning, configuring, and administering Cisco call processing and voice messaging'.... I'll buy that. I would rate this book a solid 4 out of 5. I would have liked to have seen a bonus CD accompanying the title with multimedia content (I'm thinking video walkthroughs of some of the more involved processes, maybe some lecture content on the more complex theory topics); maybe in the third edition (hint, hint, nudge, nudge).

The book is intrinsically about the system administration of these Cisco products. It stresses that you should do a design phase prior to any actual installation. This should be as detailed as possible, to [try to] anticipate the phone behaviours and needs of the users. A key idea that needs to be kept in mind during this is that individual components of the system will fail, so redundancy needs to be built in at all levels above the cable that connects the device [ie. IP phone] to the rest of the network. The author remarks that the only real exception to redundancy is this single cable from the phone. Because a motivator for going to VoIP phones that have inline power is the reduced cabling needs. And users seem to accept as self-evident that if this cable breaks, then certainly the phone is disconnected.Chapter 2 discusses Communication Manager 3.3, where all services are turned off by default. Apparently, in earlier versions, some services were turned on, right out of the box. While the text does not say this explicitly, I suspect that this led to certain attack vectors that came in on some of those active default services. So live and learn, and Cisco is hence bolting down the services. What this means is that you, the sysadmin, needs to [or at least should] understand each service that you activate.The complexity in the book rises when you reach Chapter 4, on route plans and call flow. It increases in the next chapter, which is about implementing the equivalent of black and white lists for different devices. If you temporarily imagine each device to be not a phone but, say, a browser with Internet access, then the concepts of those lists are easy to grasp. But when it comes to phone devices, the implementation of the lists is rather intricate.CUC and Unity also can handle the processing of incoming calls, as evidenced in Chapter 9. Here, if you have a background in Interactive Voice Response systems, you can see similarities to what Cisco offers. But a major difference is that, as far as I can discern, speech recognition is used nowhere here. The incoming caller chooses from various options by pressing buttons.

Just like the podcast, this transcription of the podcast testimonials is a mixed bag of true ghost stories and supernatural accounts from inane to the creepy.The only misstep in this book is Jim transcribing the accounts word for word, including poor grammar, ineffective storytelling, etc. as it came from the mouth of the teller. I get that it keeps intact the authenticity of the accounts, but if you want to hear the actual account, just listen to the podcast. When transitioning these accounts to the printed page, I think they could have used some editing to beef up weak spots, delete pointless details, or otherwise reform the story to put the best version of it to paper. As it is, the accounts are too raw, and what works for an audio experience doesn't translate to the page in this kind of literal word-for-word dictation.Still, Jim does great work and I like having this book in my collection. In spite of some nits to pick, it's a fun read with short little stories told by real people.

Surprisingly gripping, spooky & thought provoking!! I have quite a collection of this sort of ' true accounts' of the Paranormal books, half of which are boring - downright lame,lol!! But as my first book by this author, I plan on slowly aquiring every one now! I like the feel of hearing each account straight from the ' experience's mouth, * keeps my ADD mind interested! Buy it used here- u will NOT b disappointed as the content covers all ranges of strange experiences

There are 2 reasons now to go to bed - one, is my wife and two is I so look forward to turning off the lights and reading Jim Harold's True Ghost Stories in the dark!Jim Harold is the jovial and convivial host of Jim Harold's Paranormal Podcast. He's taken some of his best ghost stories and put them into text available to read. And there are some great stories in here! Some are creepy, and some are (to use a term Jim has been accused of overusing) poignant, but all of them are really enjoyable.There are a lot of paranormal podcasts, but there is only one Jim Harold. Some hosts of the other podcasts can be disrespectful and downright cocky sometimes to their callers, but Jim is always respectful and seems genuinely interested in hearing his callers' stories - and with good reason! There are some great stories in here.Looking forward to more from Jim Harold!

I just love Jim Harold's style be it writing on interviewing (on his Paranormal Plus http://jimharold.net/ or Jim Harold.com) This is not a graphic, gross or over the top type ghost book. I even think it is a good read for teens because of Jim's sensitivity to the readers. It is a good old fashion chiller. To read other people tell of their paranormal stories and still be able to sleep at night is great. I have bought book #1 in both hard copy and now in kindle. I sometimes bring the kindle when I know I may have to wait somewhere and what fun it is to spook yourself while you wait. In all seriousness I enjoyed all three books and I continue to listen to his podcasts. This book is just my speed for true stories and I think most people will love the books.

Not simply ghost stories, this book is filled tales of paranormal activity. From hauntings to possession, the stories explore many aspects of what we know about activity. First hand accounts given from the people who have lived to tell their stories made for an interesting evening of reading. The inclusion of Jim's personal stories added the right touch to finish off the book.

For those who love a good ghost story, this book is a must. The stories are gleaned from the Campfire Tales radio show. Some of them are pretty creepy, so I stopped reading them just before bed. Reminded me of those nights when I was a child when I pulled the covers over my head in order to sleep!

This is the first book in the Jim Harold series that made it cool for adults to read under the covers with a flashlight again. Some of the stories will send chills down your spine, some will bring tears to your eyes, and some will make you want to keep the flashlight on until the sun comes up. Whether you listen to Jim Harold's Campfire podcast or not (but really you should), these stories are the real deal told by real people. Treat yourself to this book....and a new flashlight!

If you read the information about this book, you will see that it was first published nearly 100 years ago. The writing is SOOO small, I'm in my 20s, have 20/20 eyesight, and I really needed a magnifying glass to read it. The printing is about half the size of what I'm writing now. I can't even imagine what my mother or other people who wear glasses would think when reading this book. If it were possible, I would give the book a negative rating, based on the miniscule print of this book alone.As if that didn't make me yawn enough, nearly all of these so called "true" ghost stories are well known wives' tales. Most of these stories can be found in the children's book series, "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." The author of that series acknowledges the stories as being urban legends, and does not claim any of them to be true. The author of THIS book, however, claims that these stories are not only in fact true, but also happened to him! I'm surprised they even still sell this book anymore.

About the Author

Shohaku Okumura was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1948. He received his education at Komazawa University in Tokyo, Japan, where he studied Zen Buddhism. On December 8, 1970, Okumura was ordained at Antaiji by his teacher Kosho Uchiyama, and he practiced there until Uchiyama retired in 1975. He then traveled to the United States, where he cofounded Valley Zendo in Massachusetts and continued Uchiyama’s style of zazen practice there. In 1981 he returned to Japan and began translating the writings of Uchiyama and Eihei Dogen from Japanese into English. He taught at the Kyoto Soto Zen Center in Japan, and the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis, and was the director of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center (previously called Soto Zen Education Center) in San Francisco from 1997 to 2010.             He is the founding teacher of Sanshin Zen Community, based in Bloomington, Indiana, where he lives with his family.

It brought me to tears many times.This is Shohaku Okumura Roshi's masterful commentary to Dogen Zenji's masterful Shobogenzo-Sansuikyo, "The Mountains and Waters Sutra." Ring a ding ding, the presentation of Master Dogen's Way of Shikantaza is a gift that has always been ours. As astounding as have been Okumura's prior works such as "Realizing Genjo Koan" ... as cherished as are other modern classics like "Beginner's Mind" and "Opening the Hand" ... this offering is on a level of refinement a step beyond. (I put it on the line saying that.) Okumura has reached to new heights in his reaching old age.But for that same reason, I am actually going to CAUTION some prospective readers:Perhaps no book in English (in my eyes) has ever so perfectly captured our way of Dogen and Shikantaza, "Just Sitting that Hits the Mark" ... but to truly appreciate these essays, the reader needs to have a mature understanding and feel for both already deep down. If you understand Dogen, you will understand this book. If Dogen and our ways of "Goalless" Just Sitting are still a puzzle for someone, than aspects of this book may be just as puzzling. As usual, Okumura Roshi does an excellent job explaining one of Dogen's seminal works. Professor Bielefeldt's translation is lucid and clear and Okumura Roshi's commentary explains the enigmatic language of the Thirteenth Century Dōgen with a clarity that comes with years of Buddhist practice and study. This book is a must for Buddhist practitioners and others who seek the "Ancient Buddhas." Highly recommended!

Having been born in Harlem, loved it, studied it, and penned my own experience of growing up there in the 1950s and `60s, I thought I knew, at least a little bit about everything there was to know about my beloved community. Jonathan Gill's comprehensive book, Harlem: The Four Hundred Year History From Dutch Village to Capital of Black America, disabused me of that misconception.Gill has written a "complete" history starting with Henry Hudson sailing up the Hudson River in 1609, and ending with the 2009 relocation of founding father, Alexander Hamilton's historic home which, until its move around the corner and down the hill, sat across the street from my house.Sometimes Gill's detail is sometimes excessive, but his breezy tidbits make up for it. A few examples: Madam Jumel (once married to Aaron Burr) was said to be the model for Dickens' character, Mrs. Havisham. The term "hot dog" was reportedly coined at the Polo Grounds stadium in 1901 because center field ended 483 feet away, thus "... making a home run there a near impossibility." In 1904, it took 31 minutes to travel by subway from 125th St. to 145th.Four hundred years of history is a lot to cram into one book, especially a beguiling place like Harlem with its larger-than-life reputation. A mere dot on a map, Harlem only measures about three square tucked-away miles on the upper part of an island empire and, at least in recent decades, has largely been maligned and often ignored by the ruling class.Gill does not skimp on Harlem's hellish years, but he also captures its vibe and enormous influence on music, religion, the arts, literature, fashion, sports, cuisine, politics, migration, and its involvement in both racial strife and ethnic diversity.I'm happy to have finally read this encyclopedia-like compendium. It's scholarly, but generally easy reading. Some of the transitions are not always smooth, and because his footnotes were so voluminous, he does not list them at the back of the book; instead, he directs readers to his website, which is no longer easy to find. Many times I wanted to look up a reference while reading, but wasn't near a computer, and even if I was, looking things up is a lot to ask when you're already trying to get through 450 pages.Sugar Hill: Where The Sun Rose Over Harlem

I found this to be a very informative and detailed history of Harlem, the neighborhood on Manhattan Island from 145th Street in the south to 155th street in the north with Edgecomb Avenue to the east and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. The author provides very historical details from the settlement of Manhattan by the Dutch right up to the present time. I have to confess I felt overwhelmed by the numerous details. An example would be cartoonist Thomas Nast who was responsible for the elephant being the logo for the Republican party in addition to the caricature of Santa Claus.Author Gill provides us with the history of iconic landmarks such as the Polo Grounds, home to the New York Giants through the 1957 season, the Apollo Theatre, and the Morris-Jumel mansion. Several individuals from the entertainment world such as George and Ira Gershwin, the Marx brothers, Billie Holiday, Bert Williams, "Fats" Waller, Duke Ellington, and Paul Robeson are given their deserved space in any history of Harlem. New York Giants' iconic center fielder Willie Mays, Adam Clayton Powell, Malcolm Little (better known as Malcolm X), boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and also Harlem resident former President Bill Clinton are also deservedly included. Some details are also provided regarding the conviction and execution of Officer Charles Becker and the gangsters involved in the murder of Herman Rosenthal.Author Jonathan Gill deserves a lot of credit for the enormous amount of detail he provides on the history of Harlem. He has done a thorough job. However, speaking for myself, I found the detail excessive and I did find myself getting bogged down at times getting through it all. This is a five star book, but for me personally, I must give it four stars indicating that "I like it."

This is a very detailed history of that section of Manhattan known as Harlem. From the first settlements at the lower tip of the island, to the first few farms "uptown," the author writes about the development of one of the most recognizable places in the world. Mr. Gill covers everything from the first efforts to farm, to the great migrations that affected Harlem, to the music, dance, and entertainment center it became - and everything in between, before, and after. Sometimes the street names became a little tedious for me, because I don't live there and am not to familiar with those streets except in a general idea of where they are. Actually, I was drawn to this book by the fact that my son lives in Harlem, near the Abbyssinian Baptist Church! Now I feel I know his neighborhood very well!

This is very engaging history with interesting detail that brings the centuries to life. Not only is it a history of a fascinating place, it introduces a host of characters whose imprints have contributed to the personality of Harlem. These include Aaron Burr, John James Audubon, Thomas Nast, Cab Calloway, Malcolm X, and Geoffrey Canada. Gill emphasizes race, music and the arts, and economic factors that have played key roles in Harlem's ascent, decline and resurgence.Most interesting were the waves of immigration and how generations of politicians courted these constituents while largely leaving them unsupported while in office. Undeniably, music is associated with Harlem and a great deal of the book is dedicated to this fact. Fascinating to me is the rough years in New York from the mid 1960's through the 1970's when a declining and bankrupt city almost went under. Gill provides shocking facts including Harlem's 820 people per acre density (three times the Manhattan average), how urban renewal was equated with "Negro removal", and more than a third of heroin addicts in the U.S. lived in Harlem in the late 1970's. The author ends his history on a hopeful note recognizing that Harlem has been experiencing a real estate renaissance. Ironically (perhaps humorously) he points to the arrival of Target and Costco as positive signs.

Vibrant simple illustrations cover Black history nicely. It starts with March 5th, 1770 when African American Crispus Attucks was shot by the British. This became one of the sparks for the Revolutionary War. This book tells of the Plessy verses Ferguson decision, Harriet Tubman, Madam C.J. Walker, and Bessie Coleman. Later it speaks of Jesse Owens, Marian Anderson, Jackie Robinson, and Brown verses the Board of Education. Towards the end of the book Rosa Parks is introduced, as well as, Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, Wilma Rudolph, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. The end wraps up the book introducing us to Thurgood Marshall, Shirley Chisholm, Hank Aaron, Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey. I love the ending where it asks the children, "Will others follow you into battle to defend liberty, will today be the day you add to history? Today is the day, today is to be." It gets the children thinking about their part in the American story.It is a 6.6 Accelerated Reader quiz level.

This book isn't what I was looking for.. It is a nice book, but I was hoping for a little more 'meat.' Every page has a history fact presented in poem. Very brief. And truly VERY little info. There was also a strange picture of Oprah holding the earth.. It was just weird, like she had 'the whole world in her hands' in a god-like way. Amazon was great to me and their customer service was awesome. **I HIGHLY recommend Heart and Soul by Kadir Nelson. It's stunningly beautiful and turned out to be exactly what I wanted!**

There is so much to love about this book.I love each page's potential to be used as complimentary paired reading.I love that it doesn't have to be read all at once, and that skipping around is completely okay.I love that it goes in chronological order.I love the diversity of VIPs; war heros, doctors, astronauts, explorers, athletes, political leaders, etc.I'm so glad I added this to my library.

We had to return the first book because the pages weren’t separated so we could not turn them. The replacement book came quickly and was perfect. The content is alright.

I am a teacher, and my teacher friends and I loved this book. We read about people from it every day in February. Good stories, beautifully illustrated.

The book is beautiful with wonderful factual information, however, I bought it for a 5th grade read aloud. It doesn't easily lend itself for a whole class read aloud. A small group reading may be a more effective way to use it in a classroom.
