About the Author

Shohaku Okumura was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1948. He received his education at Komazawa University in Tokyo, Japan, where he studied Zen Buddhism. On December 8, 1970, Okumura was ordained at Antaiji by his teacher Kosho Uchiyama, and he practiced there until Uchiyama retired in 1975. He then traveled to the United States, where he cofounded Valley Zendo in Massachusetts and continued Uchiyama’s style of zazen practice there. In 1981 he returned to Japan and began translating the writings of Uchiyama and Eihei Dogen from Japanese into English. He taught at the Kyoto Soto Zen Center in Japan, and the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis, and was the director of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center (previously called Soto Zen Education Center) in San Francisco from 1997 to 2010.             He is the founding teacher of Sanshin Zen Community, based in Bloomington, Indiana, where he lives with his family.

It brought me to tears many times.This is Shohaku Okumura Roshi's masterful commentary to Dogen Zenji's masterful Shobogenzo-Sansuikyo, "The Mountains and Waters Sutra." Ring a ding ding, the presentation of Master Dogen's Way of Shikantaza is a gift that has always been ours. As astounding as have been Okumura's prior works such as "Realizing Genjo Koan" ... as cherished as are other modern classics like "Beginner's Mind" and "Opening the Hand" ... this offering is on a level of refinement a step beyond. (I put it on the line saying that.) Okumura has reached to new heights in his reaching old age.But for that same reason, I am actually going to CAUTION some prospective readers:Perhaps no book in English (in my eyes) has ever so perfectly captured our way of Dogen and Shikantaza, "Just Sitting that Hits the Mark" ... but to truly appreciate these essays, the reader needs to have a mature understanding and feel for both already deep down. If you understand Dogen, you will understand this book. If Dogen and our ways of "Goalless" Just Sitting are still a puzzle for someone, than aspects of this book may be just as puzzling. It is not a simple book for newcomers and those who don't dig Dogen to the bone.I might even say that reading this book is something of a test of one's maturity in this Practice. The brilliance of these pages might elude some, but others will surely get what cannot be got. The trip through these mountains and rivers is worth it. As usual, Okumura Roshi does an excellent job explaining one of Dogen's seminal works. Professor Bielefeldt's translation is lucid and clear and Okumura Roshi's commentary explains the enigmatic language of the Thirteenth Century Dōgen with a clarity that comes with years of Buddhist practice and study. This book is a must for Buddhist practitioners and others who seek the "Ancient Buddhas." Highly recommended!

Having been born in Harlem, loved it, studied it, and penned my own experience of growing up there in the 1950s and `60s, I thought I knew, at least a little bit about everything there was to know about my beloved community. Jonathan Gill's comprehensive book, Harlem: The Four Hundred Year History From Dutch Village to Capital of Black America, disabused me of that misconception.Gill has written a "complete" history starting with Henry Hudson sailing up the Hudson River in 1609, and ending with the 2009 relocation of founding father, Alexander Hamilton's historic home which, until its move around the corner and down the hill, sat across the street from my house.Sometimes Gill's detail is sometimes excessive, but his breezy tidbits make up for it. A few examples: Madam Jumel (once married to Aaron Burr) was said to be the model for Dickens' character, Mrs. Havisham. The term "hot dog" was reportedly coined at the Polo Grounds stadium in 1901 because center field ended 483 feet away, thus "... making a home run there a near impossibility." In 1904, it took 31 minutes to travel by subway from 125th St. to 145th.Four hundred years of history is a lot to cram into one book, especially a beguiling place like Harlem with its larger-than-life reputation. A mere dot on a map, Harlem only measures about three square tucked-away miles on the upper part of an island empire and, at least in recent decades, has largely been maligned and often ignored by the ruling class.Gill does not skimp on Harlem's hellish years, but he also captures its vibe and enormous influence on music, religion, the arts, literature, fashion, sports, cuisine, politics, migration, and its involvement in both racial strife and ethnic diversity.I'm happy to have finally read this encyclopedia-like compendium. It's scholarly, but generally easy reading. Some of the transitions are not always smooth, and because his footnotes were so voluminous, he does not list them at the back of the book; instead, he directs readers to his website, which is no longer easy to find. Many times I wanted to look up a reference while reading, but wasn't near a computer, and even if I was, looking things up is a lot to ask when you're already trying to get through 450 pages.Sugar Hill: Where The Sun Rose Over Harlem

I found this to be a very informative and detailed history of Harlem, the neighborhood on Manhattan Island from 145th Street in the south to 155th street in the north with Edgecomb Avenue to the east and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. The author provides very historical details from the settlement of Manhattan by the Dutch right up to the present time. I have to confess I felt overwhelmed by the numerous details. An example would be cartoonist Thomas Nast who was responsible for the elephant being the logo for the Republican party in addition to the caricature of Santa Claus.Author Gill provides us with the history of iconic landmarks such as the Polo Grounds, home to the New York Giants through the 1957 season, the Apollo Theatre, and the Morris-Jumel mansion. Several individuals from the entertainment world such as George and Ira Gershwin, the Marx brothers, Billie Holiday, Bert Williams, "Fats" Waller, Duke Ellington, and Paul Robeson are given their deserved space in any history of Harlem. New York Giants' iconic center fielder Willie Mays, Adam Clayton Powell, Malcolm Little (better known as Malcolm X), boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, and also Harlem resident former President Bill Clinton are also deservedly included. Some details are also provided regarding the conviction and execution of Officer Charles Becker and the gangsters involved in the murder of Herman Rosenthal.Author Jonathan Gill deserves a lot of credit for the enormous amount of detail he provides on the history of Harlem. He has done a thorough job. However, speaking for myself, I found the detail excessive and I did find myself getting bogged down at times getting through it all. This is a five star book, but for me personally, I must give it four stars indicating that "I like it."

This is a very detailed history of that section of Manhattan known as Harlem. From the first settlements at the lower tip of the island, to the first few farms "uptown," the author writes about the development of one of the most recognizable places in the world. Mr. Gill covers everything from the first efforts to farm, to the great migrations that affected Harlem, to the music, dance, and entertainment center it became - and everything in between, before, and after. Sometimes the street names became a little tedious for me, because I don't live there and am not to familiar with those streets except in a general idea of where they are. Actually, I was drawn to this book by the fact that my son lives in Harlem, near the Abbyssinian Baptist Church! Now I feel I know his neighborhood very well!

This is very engaging history with interesting detail that brings the centuries to life. Not only is it a history of a fascinating place, it introduces a host of characters whose imprints have contributed to the personality of Harlem. These include Aaron Burr, John James Audubon, Thomas Nast, Cab Calloway, Malcolm X, and Geoffrey Canada. Gill emphasizes race, music and the arts, and economic factors that have played key roles in Harlem's ascent, decline and resurgence.Most interesting were the waves of immigration and how generations of politicians courted these constituents while largely leaving them unsupported while in office. Undeniably, music is associated with Harlem and a great deal of the book is dedicated to this fact. Fascinating to me is the rough years in New York from the mid 1960's through the 1970's when a declining and bankrupt city almost went under. Gill provides shocking facts including Harlem's 820 people per acre density (three times the Manhattan average), how urban renewal was equated with "Negro removal", and more than a third of heroin addicts in the U.S. lived in Harlem in the late 1970's. The author ends his history on a hopeful note recognizing that Harlem has been experiencing a real estate renaissance. Ironically (perhaps humorously) he points to the arrival of Target and Costco as positive signs.

I love the ending where it asks the children, "Will others follow you into battle to defend liberty, will today be the day you add to history? Today is the day, today is to be." It gets the children thinking about their part in the American story.It is a 6.6 Accelerated Reader quiz level.

This book isn't what I was looking for.. It is a nice book, but I was hoping for a little more 'meat.' Every page has a history fact presented in poem. Very brief. And truly VERY little info. There was also a strange picture of Oprah holding the earth.. It was just weird, like she had 'the whole world in her hands' in a god-like way. Amazon was great to me and their customer service was awesome. **I HIGHLY recommend Heart and Soul by Kadir Nelson. It's stunningly beautiful and turned out to be exactly what I wanted!**

There is so much to love about this book.I love each page's potential to be used as complimentary paired reading.I love that it doesn't have to be read all at once, and that skipping around is completely okay.I love that it goes in chronological order.I love the diversity of VIPs; war heros, doctors, astronauts, explorers, athletes, political leaders, etc.I'm so glad I added this to my library.

We had to return the first book because the pages weren’t separated so we could not turn them. The replacement book came quickly and was perfect. The content is alright.

I am a teacher, and my teacher friends and I loved this book. We read about people from it every day in February. Good stories, beautifully illustrated.

The book is beautiful with wonderful factual information, however, I bought it for a 5th grade read aloud. It doesn't easily lend itself for a whole class read aloud. A small group reading may be a more effective way to use it in a classroom.

I'm a fan of the 7 habits. I listened to the audiobook while commuting. I listen to it once every couple years. Like the original 7 habits book, I find this book helpful. Based on the "from effectiveness to greatness" subtitle, I was worried that this material was intended only for those who were already extremely successful; I did NOT find that to be the case. What I mean is: if you found the original 7 habits helpful, I expect that you'll find this new material helpful, even if you do not yet consider yourself "highly effective."If you already know the original 7 habits material very well, you might be disappointed by the large amount of time that the 8th habit book spends restating and elaborating upon the original 7 habits topics.If you have not read the original 7 habits; I suggest that you start with the 7 habits before spending any time with this newer book.

This is a great book for everyone in a leadership role or anyone wanting to expand their awareness and understanding of working well with others. The concepts are presented in a manner that is easy to understand and relatable to daily practice. The concepts can be applied to literally any field or venue, from healthcare to teaching and Fortune 500 organizations. The concepts of The 7 Habits are comingled into the book and should be read prior to this undertaking. Online videos accompany each section of the text which adds to understanding and value. இ Fuzzy Wuzzy's Summary:ѾѾѾ Somewhat recommended, with reservations and only lukewarm fuzzies.When I first read Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book over 15 years ago, I loved that book. It was filled with wisdom and ideas. There are less Aha's, epiphanies, enlightenments in this book, and the writing drags on too slowly through each chapter and the book uses far too many words to swim around some concepts that could be more concisely written. For example, one of my favorite sections in the book is at the very end in "Appendix 1: Developing The 4 Intelligences/Capacities - A Practical Guide To Action". The 20 pages of this Appendix 1 are succinct, concise, filled with little pearl nuggets of wisdom, and I cannot think of a single sentence that is filler material in that section. I am glad that I did not read this "Appendix 1" section at the end of the book first or else I would have thought that the book dragged on even more.Most of the chapters in this book seem to float around in the general vicinity of a topic with far less purpose, often being repetitive, and I often found myself thinking "where are you going with this?" while I was in the middle of a chapter. Unlike his '7 Habits' book that I finished reading within two weeks, it took me about ten months to finally finish reading this book because I got bored with it numerous times when a chapter got bogged down, oftentimes because I thought the discussion went wandering aimlessly too far off into the deep philosophical jungles or became too repetitive. It is very rare for me to take ten months to finish reading any book. But with this book, I would read one or two chapters, get bored with it, leave it alone for one or two months, and then grudgingly resume reading it later on.I get the distinct impression that during the 15 years between his '7 Habits' book and this '8th Habit' book, Covey read, considered, and included much more Eastern philosophy into his worldview. There are some good concepts in this book, albeit they are also not original ideas. Finding one's inner voice and passion, and the importance of trust, character, and discipline are well-trodden ground, covered from many different angles by motivational/business/self-help books over the previous 40+ years. Even if you like this repackaging of well-known concepts, you still have to chew through a lot of verbal gristle in this book in order to get to the essential meat of each concept that Covey is trying to convey. This book could have been a far better read if its concepts were distilled down into one third less pages (or even one half less pages in some chapters) because the wording in most chapters is not focused well and the book is in serious need of heavy amounts of editing and rewording.

8th Habit is another book in the Stephen Covey 7 Habits series. It extends the 7 habits with the 8th one which is called "Finding your voice and helping others to find theirs". Its an important habit, though I didn't think the book was a very good read.The book is split in three parts. The first part is an introduction part which is some chapters about how many people are currently lost in their job and their lives. It continues to talk about the change from the industrial age to the knowledge worker age and how everyone needs to be deeply involved in their work. I thought the first couple of chapters were great and looked forward to the rest of the book.The next part is "finding your voice" which isn't very large and largely repeats Coveys earlier work. If you have read the previous books in this series, like me, then you'll probably gradually fall asleep! It is not that the things he talks about are unimportant or that he doesn't use the Covey inspirational way of writing, its just that it takes too long and has too much repetition.The third part, by far the largest part of the book, talks about helping others to find it. Covey uses four "roles" to structure his work. They are "modeling", "pathfinding", "aligning" and "empowering". Modeling and pathfinding are part of what he calls "focus". Modeling refers to being a model for others. Pathfinding relates to creating a common vision for which people are passionate.The third and fourth role are what he calls "execution". The first one is aligning which relates to aligning the system and goals. The last is empowering, which I guess is clear what it means. Most of the things Covey discusses are quite standard in leadership and organizational literature. I don't think, in this case, he contributed very much, instead he tried to link everything together and squeeze it in his model of the world. Sometimes the linking of things seemed fairly arbitrary to me, which made me somewhat uncomfortable.All in all, I think the 8th habit was a huge disappointment. His earlier work is concrete and inspirational. However, 8th habit is more abstract, still inspirational and ... too long. It probably should have been a new chapter to the 8th habits instead!I wouldn't really recommend picking up the 8th habit. It's probably better to look at Coveys older work (7 habits). After reading these, this one is not worth reading. It is not a bad book either thus 3 stars.

Great story line. Had just a little twist to it

Finn was never late at least not any more. He was always in the clinic with plenty of time to spare normally.Mainly so he could impress his boss Ross, but also to be mentally prepared for his day. Also so he could make adjustments to his leg before he started to work. Finn has been a pediatric physiotherapist at St. Margaret's Children's Hospital for two months. He had made sure he had a reputation of having time for his patients as he felt they deserved it. A lot of his patients had challenges worse than his and most of them grinned their way through their often painful treatment. Everyone seemed to want to pair Finn up with a woman from his boss to his brother. But if Finn had trouble asted long and they were all a blur to Finn. except one and he had purposely let her go- Sophie. Now Finn had no one and he was barely recognizable inside or out. Work made Finn focus on the possible not the impossible. It had already been two years since the accident. As Finn was relaxing for a minute for lunch he heard a woman’s voice from the past. It had only been one night but now she had an eighteen month old son- Lachie and he needed to be seen. It was sophie who was a nurse. Lachie had club foot and was being treated with special boots and a bar at night and nap time to keep his feet straight. . But the boots rubbed and hurt Lachie. Sophie had pride in her son but when she seen Finn she felt sadness and anger- he should have called like he said he was going to. She hadn’t known his last name and was reeling from her beloved grandmother’s death. When Sophie had met Finn he had said he was a physiotherapist student and played rugby. She had thought they had clicked but it turned out they hadn’t. Sophie learned she was pregnant but had no last name or number to get a hold of Finn. She had tried she had scoured around social media and even checked out physiotherapist department in every Scottish University but had come up with nothing. Then one evening Sophie was waiting for finn outside the hospital and said they had to talk. The went to the deserted cafe in the hospital and Finn asked and Sophie confirmed Lachie was his son. Finn had been her first and only lover. Sophie told Finn she tried to find him but didn’t have much to go on. Then Sophie said she didn’t know what lachie would mean to Finn and would give him time to decide if he was all in to being a father to Lachie. She didn’t want a father who didn’t want to know and be there for Lachie his whole life. Lachie deserved more than that. After Sophie left Finn thought he wasn’t prepared for a son. He had one leg and could barely walk. He didn’t want the responsibility of a child. Finn knew what it was like to have a father who didn’t want to know him and he was now determined his son wasn’t going to feel like that. He then texted Sophie and told her he was one hundred percent in and they arranged to spend time together for Finn to start to get to know his son and Lachie him. There was something about Finn that still intrigued Sophie, attracted her if she was honest with herself. But she didn’t trust Finn not with erh heart or Lachie’s. She had to go carefully and with baby steps and rules and boundaries. Finn had no idea what chaos a child could bring into your life but Sophie had found out quickly. Sophie’s good friend was Hannah who had watched lachie while she went to talk to Finn. Sophie didn’t know how she would have been sane the last couple of years with out Hannah her parents didn’t help at all but then again they hadn’t really been part of her life her grandmother had taken over and raised Sophie while her parents roamed the world and that is how her parents like it. They had stopped once when lachie was ten weeks old and since they were used to servants her mother expected Sophie to wait on them finally Sophie told her mother to wait on herself and she took some pictures of Lachie t o show her friends and they were gone and sophie was relieved when they left. Finn had worried he wasn’t good enough to be Lachie’s dad but decided he would learn to be the best dad he was capable of being.I really enjoyed this book. My heart went out to Finn for all he had went through but really that made him the caring compassionate person he now was. Also it was sad to see all the self doubt he had about being a good father for Lachie. But I also felt for Sophie left waiting to hear from Finn then finding out she was pregnant and no way to get a hold of Finn and only having her friends to help her through thank god she had some good friends especially Hannah and having lost her beloved grandmother just before her pregnancy. Sophie wa sso strong, determined, and protective and forgiving Finn in the end - a good woman and mom. I was glad Finn turned into the person he now was even if it took a life altering accident. Lachie was so cute and added to this book. I enjoyed this it was a good, easy read. I liked the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend

Sophie had one night together with Finn and he disappeared without a trace. Something became of that night when she found herself pregnant and ended up raising the child. She never expected to see Finn again and imagine her surprise when he helps her son out at the Physiotherapy appointment. Now that Finn is aware of the child he wants to be in his sons life. Things become complicated the more they are together old attractions seem to arrive and it can make things more complicated then it already is.Overall I thought that this book was pretty good. I enjoyed the characters and briefly getting to know about them. I enjoyed seeing how they were working together with their child and seeing the complications unfold as the feelings between the two start heating up. This book was well written, there is enough drama and romance going on to keep the readers enjoying themselves. Overall this was a pretty good book I really enjoyed it.

Reunited by Their Secret Son is a sweet contemporary medical romance. The book set in Scotland features Finn and Sophie who have a child after a one night hook up. As the title suggests they meet again quite by accident. Some of the local terminology was a bit hard to decipher (glue ear) but overall the book is a solid 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this Romance but I had some reservations about it. I received this for free and I voluntarily chose to review this. I've given it a 4.5* rating. These two people had a lot of hurt in their baggage but I liked that they really made the effort to work it out, even though it was hard. There is a lot going on in this.

Features beautiful traditional interiors by Colefax and Fowler. Pretty good photography.

Really love this book! So many great ideas!

These people keep issuing the same book over and over again under different titles--same photos, same format, etc. I already have two copies of the same book with two different titles! This is the latest version of the same thing. I loved the first book, but I deeply resented finding that I bought the same book unintentionally under a different title. Save your money and get the same book in an older version for a lot less!

Since 1965, Donald Ayers' "English Words from Latin and Greek Elements" has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach? Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words. I did buy this for a class, and doing the required work was rather time consuming, however, it was also very rewarding and useful. Never again will you wonder when a medical professional throws out some term. Despite knowledge of Latin and/or Greek, this book just drills you on breaking words down when applied to English, as well as some light discussion of semantic shift over time and some other basic linguistic principles, which are sufficient for the layman or classics student, while short enough to not be tedious to someone in linguistics. The examples used are a bit antiquated in the chapter introductions, but as the rest of the lessons deal with antiquated suffixes, prefixes and roots/bases of words, it is rather timeless. I still frequently carry it with me to brush up on what I learned.

First, do note that it is most definitely a textbook. If you just want a book to help you understand the English language, I would read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue.I had to read this for a course on Latin and Greek roots, and found this book very easy to follow despite not being very familiar with the subject matter. I did feel a few things could have used better explaining (it doesn't explain "doublets" well at all, and there were parts that were quite repetitive), and I think the usefulness of this book really comes down to how the instructor uses it, as well as the workbook. But overall, it was an engaging read, one that gave me a new area of interest beyond my credit requirement.

Twenty plus years ago I took a college class, Greek and Latin Elements in English. I loved the class, kept my class notes and notebook, but the book vanished when I went overseas. I was sad for a long time until I found it on Amazon Prime. I love it! As far as I can tell, it's accurate. I'm not a scholar, but I love knowing more about our language and passing on tidbits to help my children with vocabulary.

I originally checked this book out from my library to use as a textbook for my undergraduate etymology class, but I loved it so much that I had to have my own copy! Each chapter gives you a set of base/root words from Latin and Greek so you can learn them in chunks. However, I will admit that the chapter and index organization is not the clearest for the reader, but it's not half bad once you get used to it.

Not what I thought it was, this book is about English words that have changed or came from other origins... not a strictly translation book... more of a work book in a sence. I was looking for a quick reference book for my nursing classes. This could help but not in the way or time saving way I was looking for.

This was my textbook for my undergrad etymology class, which was probably one of my favorite college classes. I had sold this textbook back after the class ended, but I couldn't stand to part with it! This book divides up Greek and Latin roots into chapters so you can learn a little bit at a time and is fairly comprehensive. This is likely a great gift for the odd word nerd like me. :)

I'm only one chapter in and I already love the book. I know it's meant to teach vocabulary, but I love the history I learned at the start of the book a lot. It is already worth the purchase

Meh. Not a good read. I mean, its an old old text book. Refers to the USSR etc.Just really boring writing.
