KRISTY ANN KUTCH has taught more than two hundred colored pencil and watercolor pencil workshops to artists and students nationwide. The new colored Pencil book of K.A. Kutch is a very good book both for beginners and for more experienced workers with colored pencil . This is a work book , you'll have need of a sketch book to keep next to it , to make your own notes . The book covers as many angles as possible . There is a chapter on the Wax based traditional colored pencils , with information I didn't yet have : a blue sketcher pencil from Caran d' Ache that erases easily . That sort of information is everywhere in the book . There is a very useful bit about the right paper , with all the variations possible : museum board , velum finished Bristol board and other kinds of paper ,board and film that are not to be found in my home town . So you don't try them out either . Now I can send for them online , without wasting money on too many trials and errors . Mrs Kutch is a huge favorite of aquarel pencils , using solvents , how to blend , - heat blending , various other ways . In the appendix , you get a color chart with color and aquarel pencils from Bruynzeel , Caran d'Ache , Cretacolor , Derwent , Faber Castel ( my own favorite ) , Koh-i-noor , Lyra , Sanford , Stabilo and Tombow . it is such a complete book , you'll need a lot of time to get trough it , not for the reading only -171 pages - but for doing your own experiments , encouraged by the lovely drawings in the book . I certainly need it .

There is so much new information about HOW you may want to use colored pencils. This is NOT an instruction book on colored pencils per se, but a tome on all the things that you can garner to make them work their magic. A must-have.

I've learned so many amazing techniques, reading this book. Kristy Ann Kutch is great! She teaches in a way, that she keeps you reading on and isn't dry, so as to lose interest or feel overwhelmed.

I found this book very informative and enjoyable to read. It's a great reference for colored pencil brands, types, and techniques. I am always open to expanding my colored pencil knowledge. Kristy is a wonderful teacher and very supportive and helpful. If you ever get a chance to take a workshop from her in person, you will be in for a warm and memorable experience.

Very good information for work with colored pencils, also had a class with the author recently, good teacher.In the book you can learn the qualities of the different brand names, How to get the best use of what you have, also finding out what is available to improve your work. Vicki Beall

She gives a lot of information about newer techniques and papers, etc., and gives full color charts of so many of the pencil brands available. She also includes a section on watercolor pencils, which is helpful. It's about the media available and gives suggestions on mixing them. I enjoyed the book and am using it as a helpful reference. Recommend it!

Full of great colored pencil information. Even if you're not a big fan of drawing flowers, the book is excellent. Thorough review of pencils, materials and techniques.

First I should say that I don't have vast experience with Colored Pencils. I've been working with them for less than a year. I expected from other reviews for this book to contain more useful information than it did. There are many full color photos included in the book but not really any of the techniques. The book is very reading intensive - which is fine it is a book; however I believe I anticipated more photographs of steps and procedures than the book provided. I am primarily a Tactile Kinesthetic learner with secondary visual learning style. (Learn your learning style and you will have a better experience in learning new things).There is definitely some good and useful information provided in this book, I suggest sitting down with your pencils and a sketch book and playing with the techniques explained as you read through it. This will give you the tactile Kinesthetic experience and help to solidify any of the information you read within the pages. While I don't imagine most are TK learners, I firmly believe that the act of Doing something (eg: using colored pencils with new techniques learned in a book) solidifies the learning into skill. You will take far more away from this book by playing with the techniques as they are introduced than using it as a reference.

Tuttle-Singer is a very good writer. However, this memoir is in the end a rather progressive and inaccurate view of the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While true that she has spent considerable time in Israel, and much of it in Jerusalem, she fails to bring a sharp focus onto why there is such bitter turmoil surrounding this wonderful city. I have been to Israel, twice, the last time in 2015 just before the rash of stabbings she describes. It is not her imagery that is lacking, but rather her post modern world view where all the participants of the golden city seem to share equal blame for the bloodshed and lack of peace. No where does she mention the fact that most Arab, and all Palestinians, leaders refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist. In fact, they would prefer that all Jews in the country be driven into the sea.She bemoans the fact that Arab boys are frisked too hard or beaten by Israeli soldiers, all while they could be the next stabbing perp. She never mentions the Palestinian practice of rewarding the families of dead terrorists. She equates Israeli terrorists with Arab ones so that they share equal blame in her mind. She points out that one of her son's teachers told her all Arabs were terrorists. While of course this in not true, at least Israeli schools do not teach and perpetuate the myth of Jewish blood libel, where for centuries they have been taught that Jews make Matzoh from Arabic children's blood. She never mentions that if the Palestinian leaders would only accept Israels"s right to exist there could be peace tomorrow.All memoirs are of of course self-indulgent. However, she must have mentioned at least a dozen times during the course of the book the details of her stoning at the Damascus gate many years ago. Two or three times would have been more than enough. Her abusive relationships with at least two men also contribute nothing to the story.I found myself about half way through this work wanting it to get better and finally just to end. She does describe in detail the many interesting characters living inside the city's quarters, but had I not visited there myself, I am not sure I would have felt and sensed the deeply religious flavors that flow there. She at least twice says she feels nothing but stone when she touches the Western, (Wailing) Wall. As a Jew I don't even know how that is possible.She is more excited by Tinder hook-ups, hashish, and and body piercings and tattoos. Perhaps it is generational but I can't relate to these things. In the end the trouble I am having is that this book has more to do about her than about Jerusalem.The idea and title for the book are tantalizing and she writes well. However, I found myself not being able to wait for it to end. And that is sad.

“Mermaids Can Go Anywhere” Sara Tuttle-Singer gives us a colorful story of the heartbeat of Jerusalem drawn in vivid colors for all of us to savor. In a potent mixture of joy, sadness, and occasional despair, the author lays bare her personal feelings as well as the heartbeat of a city and its people. Her desire to live in every quarter of the city exposes the joy, the horror, the danger of daily life in the in the city. At the same time, she introduces us to a colorful cast of characters, Jew, Christian, and Arab alike to magical secret places and rooftops not available to the tourist throng. It’s a shame that these people live their lives behind invisible walls, never looking at their neighbors. Her mermaid tattoo is a symbol of her desire to understand the people and neighborhoods by living in every quarter of the city. By living as a mermaid, Sara experiences everything and watching with her keen eye, Sara can pass through, because, no one pays attention to the mermaid. Mermaids, you see, never really fit in. While on this exploration of the city, the mermaid goes everywhere. Sara takes us along for this journey of discovery, and, we are enriched for it. If only more people followed Sara’s example, perhaps, the conversation can begin among the residents and a way forward can be found, finding the universal dignity in each other’s lives.

Jerusalem has always been on my list of "must visit" places. But when I read what Ms. Tuttle-Singer wrote and the gorgeous photographs in the Old City, I felt a pull to Jerusalem that I had never felt before. The kind of pull and longing that you feel about your childhood home.I love how the author has so immersed herself in the people of the Old City but she never abandoned herself or her own identity. She was a welcome visitor, an honored guest, a returning friend to the denizens of this ancient but timeless place.Thank you, Ms. Tuttle-Singer. Your work is a revelation and a gift.

I read her because she is fresh, insightful and fun thinking to this highly conflicted region. With her new book Sarah becomes legend.Jerusalem has a "mermaid" who sings a siren song for all the multitudes of the city. And what a raw, honest ballad it is. For anyone, at a thinking level, interested in this region this is a must read. I am sending a copy to Jared and Ivanka Kushner with a request to read. My bet is Ivanka will meet the mermaid over coffee ☕and that will have far reaching impacts in peace for Jerusalem.

I didn't buy this book because I want to stand on a stage and tell stories about my life. I got it to help me create a graphic novel memoir and I wanted some technique on how to take memories from my childhood and to craft them into something that has structure and meaning. I certainly got that, along with a very entertaining book that is full of great tips, fabulous stories, and homework that I've been doing regularly. I read this book with a highlighter in one hand, and a notebook in the other. And all the while I flipped through the pages absorbing his lessons, ideas came to me. I wrote them all down. I located the themes in my own stories. I worked out key points. And I even cut bits. All while reading Storyworthy. It has jumpstarted my own project. Thanks for that, Matt.Matt says at the end of the book that he aims to be entertaining, and he certainly is that. It's a fun read that I would happily recommend to anyone, because we all tell stories, and it's nice to have a little help along the way.

I heard Matt Dicks on the Art of Manliness podcast, (one of my favorites, you should check it out) just last week. I LOVED his concept of Homework For Life and started doing it that very night. I also told my two 30-something grown children to perhaps do the same thing, sending them links to the Art of Manliness podcast and Matt's TedTalk about Homework for Life.Then, I took a DEEP dive myself. I started with the two most recent of the related podcasts from Matt & his wife Elysha, decided to go back to the beginning of the podcasts and started from there, ordered the book from Amazon, decided that 2 days was too long to wait, so downloaded the audiobook right then.In less than three days, I'd listened to the entire book, listened to 2/3rds of the podcast, AND started reading the book itself. Needless to say, I am smitten. I truly wish that there was a Moth or Speak Up venue here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Since there isn't, I'll be making a pilgrimage up to Hartford sometime next year.

It's winter break. The wind howls outside and I'm cozy but bored inside. So I buy Storyworthy, hoping it'll offer tips to improve my writing.Kill my boredom while improving myself? It sounds too good to be true. And it might be. In an era of blogs-posing-as-books, where everyone wears the guise of a guru, I have no confidence Storyworthy will be $9.99 worthy.Yet, just a few pages in, Mathew Dicks destroys any apprehensions I had. The book is full of actionable advice and solid examples that exemplify the suggestions. My copy is full of highlights I love ok to whenever I take on a new writing project. I even have a "cheat-sheet" with terms like "Elephant" and "Back-Packing" bullet-pointed with definitions for quick reference.While I had hoped to improve my writing, Storyworthy has had a trickle down effect to my conversations and social life.Take it from a serial cheapskate, Storyworthy is worth every penny.

I liken this to Stephen King’s On Writing, which I loved. They both have entertaining autobiographical information and elements of crafting a story, but this book is way more applicable in terms of building actual stories. With that said, even if your end game isn’t crafting stories, Matthew Dicks implements methods of capturing memories such as the crash and burn exercise to storing fresh memories with Homework for Life.This book is chock full of valuable information given in a very charming and captivating way. I would really recommend this book to just about anyone.

I am laying next to my wife of 15 years and taking the extra time to highlight this is a great book. I read chapters to her because I liked the tales. She let me read aloud because she likes them now too. She got to hear why I chuckled and even cried as I read.Matt taught me about present tense, but, location, five seconds, imagery, and dragging folks into a past. I have already started his task and working to improve how I save my thoughts.I love to read and hate to write. I love listening to a great moving story. This books helps me better appreciate a great stories. However, with a bit more practice it might also help me make my stories more interesting.

I heard Mr. Dick's interview on the Art of Manliness podcast and was deeply impressed. So I shared the podcast with my brother, who is writing about his training for the ididarod, and my daughter, who wants to be a writer. Then, I bought this on audiobook and have been listening to it and loving it. I started doing Homework For Life last night and the ideas for stories just kept coming. But so did the insights. The strangest of which was realizing that I need to ask my best friend if he would speak at my funeral. I also started to wonder if secrets of story-telling are like stories themselves, in that maybe there are many, many secrets out there and that in his act of giving them away, Mr. Dicks will probably find even more, in which case I look forward to reading that book too!

This book was life changing for me! So much wisdom and helpful information. Truly one of the best books on storytelling I've ever read/listened to. I bought both the ebook and audiobook because it's that good! The author is funny, so the book is entertaining as well as informative. I could see "Storyworthy" being used in a course on communication. A must read for anyone who functions in the real world or wants to speak from the stage!

Matt is the rare person who can both teach and do what he teaches. In this book he shares the techniques that make him a master storyteller.

Being new to weaving I have purchased several books on the subject. Each one was of some help but, they all left me with questions. They describe techniques etc that seemed to have something missing. I felt like I would have to take what was taught in one book and look through the others for clarification only to find that the information wasn't covered in any of the other books at all. Then finally, Lindsey's book was available. I was so excited to get mine. I was not disappointed and the book is even better than what I was hoping for. If you can only buy one weaving book, this would definitely be my recommendation. It is very well done. Now, I look forward for her second book to be available and I will not think twice about purchasing it.

I preordered this months before it was released and it was worth the wait! Visually, it's a beautiful book with matte pages (perfect for taking notes in if desired), binding that with some use will allow you to leave the book open while you use the techniques, and a ribbon bookmark.The content itself is great too- Lindsey does a great job explaining with pictures and words how to execute each technique from beginning tabby to adding embellishments like gold leaf. As a word of caution, it does include a couple of specific projects to get started and practice the techniques but if you're looking for instruction on how to make an exact replica of various tapestries, this is not the book for you. For instance, the pillow project on the front cover is in the book, but it simply tells you "When you have completed your tapestry to the desired size of your pillow...". Personally I prefer it this way as it gives me the reader creative license to make my own designs, and Lindsey covers enough techniques to where I feel unlimited to what I can accomplish on the loom.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a creative outlet. Weaving is methodical, meditative, and with this book approachable and requires just a few basic supplies to get started. Give it, and this book, a try!

This is my third tapestry weaving book and was very disappointed with the content and instruction. I’m all for project based learning however there aren’t enough details on techniques or troubleshooting. The photos are confusing and I ended up having to search for YouTube videos on how to do particular stitches.I’ve also done some project classes with the writer through her website and found the same issues. She rushes through stitches without clear instruction and she says “to find out more... find the tutorial in my other classes” which makes you pay more to learn particular stitches. What’s the point of buying something just to buy another class because the first one wasn’t clear? Same goes for the book. What’s the point of having to YouTube or google things when the book should explain it. The writer seems to be more interested in turning a dollar than helping her readers. At every turn she is hawking her looms or her classes or her subscription service. Sorry there are better sources out there.

Lots of step-by-step photos of basic techniques. If you're looking for specific projects to complete, this probably isn't the book for you (though there are a few at the end). However, if you're looking for a solid reference book to use when you're looking to complete other projects, this is a great option.

Beautiful to look at and beautiful to read. Lindsey does a great job of walking through everything it takes to start weaving. If you are at all interested in learning to weave I highly recommend this book!

Over the many years I have been weaving I have seen books on fixed-frame crafts come and go. They are all similar in style and content and are of little interest to me. Ms Campbell covers the same ground.If you have a child with an interest in yarn crafts, then a book like this could help improve visualization and planning, but I would buy a used one from somewhere or find one in a library. I would not buy one of these expensive new editions (any author, any publisher) for any reason.If the interest is a serious one, then buy a real weaving textbook (Mary Black, for instance) and if a fixed-frame loom is all you have, adapt the basic weaving techniques. Ask yourself though, if a good quality table loom would not be a worthwhile purchase. I was never interested in fixed frames even as a child. I wanted a floor loom since I was in primary school.I received a review copy of "Welcome to Weaving: The Modern Guide" by Lindsey Campbell (Schiffer) through NetGalley.com.

This is a great introduction to weaving.
