We purchased this book a few weeks back thanks to Voddie Baucham's recommendation in his book Family-Driven Faith (another wonderful book, I will add).If you aren't familiar with this book, it's based off the Westminster Shorter Catechism, and it's a family catechism that takes about 5-10 minutes (depending on if you discuss more) each day. Each week (yes, week) you go over ONE question (there are 104 questions... it's a 104 week devotional). Then from Monday to Saturday you have short devotions that deal directly with each question as well as other Scripture readings that support the Q&A. What I really appreciate about this catechism is it's meant for parents teaching children, so the language is really easy to understand even for younger children (my daughter is 4). It also helps comprehension of each Q&A because it's something that is discussed for an entire week. Sure, younger kids won't grasp the important concepts, I'm sure, but they surely do learn to memorize. Some people frown upon this, but I do not. Kids learn through repetition, and though we did have a concern with this at first, we are finding that our daughter is very much learning the concepts and applying them. No, she is young, so it isn't like she's the next great theologian, but she is making the connections. And really, if we want to REALLY make the argument about being afraid that the kids will just repeat and learn nothing, can we not apply this same concept to adults? Do adults not do the same in many situations? I don't think I really have to answer this question. (See: Catholic church masses.)My ONLY slight critique (nothing worth removing a star), is I really wish the Scripture proofs were included with the overall Q&A. I ended up buying a cheap pamphlet for the Scripture proofs that was $1.50 here on Amazon with Prime Shipping. Let me explain: in most cases, the Scripture proofs ARE included, but they are included in the devotional sections, but they aren't actually linked to the questions; there is no place that points to that specific verse being the Scripture proof of the Q&A. This can easily be resolved through a quick Google search and a pencil, but I would've assumed that would be pretty standard. Of course, this book seems to be more of a devotional type of catechism, but would still love to see the proofs (labeled clearly AS proofs as well) included. Doesn't deter from the content, though.If you are serious about training your child in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, I highly, highly recommend this. It's one of our favorite resources we have found.

This book provides the guidance needed for consistent family devotions. The Shorter Catechism questions are broken down into daily, bite-size segments that are small enough to keep the attention of younger children, but meaty enough to engage older children and adults. The only thing that I would change is the updating of the language; we prefer the original.If you're looking for a devotional resource to use with your whole family, Starr Meade has written an excellent book that will keep your family in the word of God.

Content provides a structured approached, based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, to teach my teen boys about the nature and ways of God. We do the devotions 4 to 5 days per week. Sometimes I combine the narratives with content from elsewhere. Sometimes we'll go through 6 days of devotional material in 3 days. Bottom line is that this book is an excellent resource for family devotions, especially families new to the Reformed tradition.

Wonderful family devotional! It works through the Westminster Shorter Catechism with one question a week and SHORT but theologically packed readings for each day of the week. Perfect for Elementary-Jr. High aged children.

Training Hearts Teaching Minds has been a tremendously helpful resource to introduce the Westminster Shorter Catechism to my four-year-old. The questions and answers have been written in modern English (I felt like the original was a bit tough for my daughter's age), and there is a short daily devotional for each Q/A set. By short, I'm talking about 5 minutes a day or so. By the end of the week, my daughter usually has both question and answer memorized. This is so much easier, more edifying, more productive, and more fun than spending 5 minutes a day just drilling on the questions and answers. I don't have any experience using this devotional with older kids, but my sense is that parents of tweens and teens could use the short devotions as a jumping off point for discussion. The author includes related scripture references as well, which also aid in broadening and deepening the discussion. Highly recommended by this mom!

Just so you know - this book is based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Some of the questions are Reformed in nature, but on the whole, the questions just deal with good theology any Christian can agree with and enjoy.This book is so good! We have been doing it for about two weeks and have really enjoyed it. There is nothing like hearing my five year old and my almost 3 year old reciting the questions and knowing what man's primary purpose is (to glorify God and enjoy Him forever). If you are looking for a good family devotional, look no further. The questions and answers are short. Sometimes, we have to explain the words the author uses or use substitutions for our girls, but it isn't a big deal at all. We really like this one.

This has been an incredible resource for a family new to the Reformed faith. The kids (ages 6-13) are eager to interact with the teachings. I am very pleased with the foundation this book presents--much more substantial (yet approachable) than expected. Would love for this to be available in a Kindle edition.

Great second book. Looking forward to third

I'll admit, book 1 wasn't my favorite. But there were some intriguing seeds planted and I wanted to see where the lead. I wasn't disappointed!Book two is MUCH better and has so much going for it! The characters have more depth, the plot has some good twists, and, overall, the world of Minnie Kim is very entertaining. I loved reading about her learning more about her new vampire-ness and the world she's become a part of.There are a few things that bugged me (like the teenage love drama), but hey, comes with the genre.It's a book I didn't want to put down. I can't wait to see what Minnie is up to in book 3!

Such a fun and entertaining book! You find yourself rooting for Minnie from the get-go and sympathizing with all her teenage angst. My daughter loves the guest one and can't wait to read the second now that mom's finished! I loved being able to get to know Minnie's vampire family better. I wanted to pause my mom duties and just read and read!

I loved this book! It's just the right blend of funny and exciting and romantic. I hope we see more of Jack, because he's one of my unexpected favorites.

As amazing and compelling as the last, if not more so. Definitely a page turner not to be put down

It was fine.

I can't compare this book to the multitude of other biographies written on Gandhi, as this is my first. At almost 900 pages of text and over 200 pages of ancillary material this is a monument for the ages. Ramachandra Guha is arguably one of the more important Indian historians of his generation in the estimation of many. He has combed through the massive volumes of Gandhi's writings, endless archives and newly available papers. His goal was nothing less than to document all of Gandhi's public and private life from his return to India in 1914 to his death in 1948.Gandhi's four interconnecting principles were to gain Indian independence, promote Hindu-Muslim unity, end untouchability, and achieve economic self reliance. To meet these goals Gandhi staged highly effective forms of political protest such as his march to the sea (in defiance of the British salt tax) and famed fasts (to stop interfaith violence). In the end foreign rule was overcome, but he was unable to prevent mass killings and partition of the subcontinent. His assassination by a Hindu nationalist would foretell of future troubles.Guha is an unabashed admirer of Gandhi, if not entirely uncritical of all he did. He sees Gandhi as the foremost figure in modern Indian history, and a highly influential figure across the world stage. This is not a difficult argument to make, and Guha does it with great conviction. The writing is fluid and unhindered by an overly academic style. The most obvious critique of his analysis is the representation of Gandhi as a liberal or even a radical. Gandhi was a reformer in many areas, but in most cases he was guided by conservative values and religious beliefs.Gandhi's rejection of western industrialism and embrace of agrarian decentralization now seem quaint and rooted in the 19th century. He was greatly influenced by Tolstoy's faith based pacifism, anti-colonialism and opposition to private land ownership. Homespun cloth and village councils were a challenge to British economic and political repression, but would not be the way of the future. In the debate with Ambedkar over the untouchables, Guha makes a different case than Arundhati Roy, who sees Gandhi as a reactionary on caste issues.Guha covers Gandhi's private life also, although somewhat superficially. In terms of an interesting psychological subject Gandhi ranks near the top. Oddly, he appears two dimensional and conventional in this portrait. Guha doesn't shy away from controversial aspects of Gandhi's celibacy experiments, such as sleeping naked with teenage relatives to test his purity. As with an extramarital dalliance with feminist Saraladevi Chaudhurani, Guha concludes nothing untoward occurred. Gandhi, both man and milieu, seem distant and difficult to fathom.Ultimately this book could have benefited from a shorter format and a more incisive look at Gandhi the politician. Guha proposes Gandhi as an antidote to the fundamentalism and intolerance that challenged India since the turn of the millennium. In doing so he sacrifices a level of insight into the traditionalist worldview Gandhi used to mobilize the rural masses. Although Guha notes the urban and middle class makeup of other nationalist and revolutionary groups, he doesn't see this as a significant lens to examine the social context of Gandhi's movement.

In this much-anticipated second part of the biography, Guha provides a balanced, well-researched and thorough narrative of one of modern worlds greatest leaders. The sheer clarity with which Guha pens this narrative makes this 1000+ page (including almost 100 pages of index and another 90 pages on notes) tome read like a fast-paced novel.The book, however, is not a glorification - in fact, the balanced approach (clearly detailing the evolution of moral, religious and what now seems as completely strange beliefs) amplifies a reader's admiration of Gandhi's pursuit of self-improvement while simultaneously engaged in leading millions to self-rule.Perhaps the biggest contribution of this biography is 2 chapters in the first third of the book that provides a more detailed look at the personal evolution of Gandhi - particularly his views on religion and what one can glean from his own reactions to his serialized autobiography. The sections that discuss the environment leading to the independence, particularly the deepening sense of separatism and selfishness of leaders arguing for Pakistan will sadden anyone aware of the millions of lives lost and displaced in the partition. On a macro level, this is a book that is an excellent case study on political strategy - revolution v/s reactionary v/s incremental pragmatism.The factual narrative of each of the key events in each year, every key meeting, correspondence, fast, march, arrest, etc is in itself a fascinating and informative read. However, one also gets to appreciate the political genius of Gandhi (opportunism, perhaps in some cases and maybe even luck - such as Tilak's early death), organizational (Congress) machinations, and various tactics leaders adopt jostling for better positions in the party's platform. The genesis and crystallization of the Hindu-Muslim relation (or lack of it) that has defined much of the subcontinent's modern history is also clearly captured in this biography - albeit from the vantage point from Gandhi. Gandhi's attempts in forging (or forcing his view of amity) a Hindu-Muslim unity while challenging some of the then-systemic biases within Hinduism is also an informative read and provides a much richer context to appreciate and judge the current day politics. The range of reactions from various key leaders to Gandhi's efforts can still be seen in almost any discussion of the politics in the sub-continent.Just as in the first part of the biography, one gets to learn more about the personal side of Gandhi - particularly his relationship with his sons and wife, a bizarre experiment involving his grand-niece , and views on sexuality (none of which are candidates to deify Gandhi as a role model in family life). It is this astounding dichotomy of fighting for freedom for the masses but keeping the ones devoted to him in strict "Law Giver" mode that will puzzle readers. A reader also learns about the key roles of some of Gandhi's assistants and a host of influential leaders from various backgrounds that unfortunately never made it through popular recounting of India's independence struggle).For the casual reader of Indian history, the wide cast of characters and their import, will be difficult to follow along - However, as a remarkable study of an individuals evolution (moral, philosophical, political) and as a narrative on the most formative years of India, this biography is a must-read.

I graduated in Physics and Mathematics 45 years ago but spent my career working in communications and computers. One of my retirement objectives has been to read and fully understand Roger Penrose's epic work "The Road to Reality" that he published in 2004. I found out within 150 pages of his 1100 page book that I my knowledge of complex mathematics and calculus needed a crash course refresher if I wanted to fully understand the principles of physics and mathematics that governed our universe. I found that Professor Downing's method of teaching mathematics through the use of background stories involving progressive problem-solving and practical explanations to be ideally suited to my learning style. This book is ideal for both the beginning student and the person needing a refresher course.

I absolutely love this book. It is written in a story format that follows characters in the land of Camorra and how they use calculus to overcome problems. I find the text easy to read as well as understand the relevance of what is being presented as it always being applied to real world like problems. There are plenty of practice problems at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge and really helps to sharpen your skills. I bought this book for self-study and so far it has been a great asset to my learning of calculus.

I love this book.

The most objectionable part of the e-book is the math type. The equations are rendered too small. In order to see them, they must be double tapped. You can't read the text and the equations on a page by simply viewing the page. I try not to be burned this way by math or science ebooks. I failed this time.

Everyone should read this book whether you have personal experience of this hideous disease or not. It give a very clear and shattering insight in to the effect it has on the relatives and carers of a person with dementia. It is heart braking and heartwarming all at once, and the reader is given a very personal glimpse of the love and pain shared by this family. It is written with much humour and brutal honesty. I highly recommend it and would like to thank the Author for sharing her knowledge.

I was looking forward to reading this, I did not find it interesting after reading it for while, it is based on personel Journey with her Mother on Dementia, I was looking for more on how to deal or cope with it on My own Mother.

Beautiful and informative book. It helped me understand what my friend is going through with her mom.

first: i never write reviews of this type.second: sally's is the first memoir i've ever read. i typically avoid them like the plaguethird: i'm an academic, have a phd, so typically don't take this sort of writing seriously.fourth: confession: my mom has dementia, which is why i read sally's book, knowing that she was a serious journalistfifth: i was not only not disappointed, i was deeply moved, affected, educated, and politicized [and i'm already quite politicized.]sixth: sally's argument is that dementia in not just one health problem among others, but that it is a defining moment in what it means to be human, now, right now, and into the future, whatever nationality you identify with. Her major concern is an ancient one: how do we respect not just our 'elders,' but the histories of elders who have made all of us who have benefited, or not, from their lives.seventh: it is a beautifully written, exquisitely written, sensitively written book that:eighth: everyone should read regardless of whether or not they have parents suffering from dementia.ninth: read it.

This was the book that made me want to be a computer programmer. When I read it, I had no knowledge of programming beyond a little Pascal, and rudiments of C.It had a massive impact on me. It consumed me, to the point where I had difficulty finishing assignments for my classes (I did not study CS as an undergrad). What the book does is give you a vocabulary and knowledge about programming that is hard to find anywhere else.The text, the examples and exercises, have a mathematical flavor, and that may turn off many potential readers, who would rather gadget around than find elegant solutions for the 8-queens puzzle or efficient algorithms to compute Fibonacci numbers.I've lent this book to several friends who were interested in learning to program, and in all cases they have returned it to me, saying it went over their heads.There seem to be two camps in computer programming:- the gadgeteers, who want to hook devices together and make them do fun things- the scientists, who appreciate computing as a medium in itselfThis book is for the second type.

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs is one of those much admired, frequently discussed, oft purchased but rarely read classics. It's not an easy read: It took me four tries to get through it.But it's worth the effort: By the time you are done you will know about imperative programming, functional programming, meta programming, lazy data structures and everything in between.This is one book that should be on every programmer's list.

I have only worked part of the way through the book, but it is one of the best books I've had the pleasure of learning from. It has an academic mathematical flavor to it, and the material is fairly dense; but the authors are masterful teachers and the exercises are very effective. Scheme is a fascinating language. At first it is uncomfortable to look at, especially if you're used to more mainstream languages. But once you get acclimated, you begin to see the beauty and raw power it holds. I recommend using the Racket IDE with the SICP extension when working through the book.

You need it, too. I won't pretend to have more useful insight into the art and craft of programming, or into SICP's relationship to it, than Paul Graham or Peter Norvig- if you want to know which reviews to trust, look these cats up.The discussion in the reviews usually concludes that this is the book that separates the computer scientists from the mere programmers. There is a definite logic to this. If you want a book that will have you churning out code that does something helpful in half an hour(because you don't think the several ways to calculate the Fibonacci Sequence are helpful), by all means, pick up Learning Perl or just read the Python documentation. They are great tools. If, however, you want to tool up on problem-solving technique a whole level or three higher up, SICP is for you. The Wizard Book is about learning to think better.Here is where I diverge from the idea that this book is for only computer scientists, though. I am an artist, graduated from college with a BA in art, going to graduate school for an MFA. SICP is one of the books that changed how I work and think. It will make you a better programmer if you read (and reread (and reread)) it in the same way that learning Latin will make you understand language itself in a whole new way. I use ideas from SICP constantly, to design software, but also to design staircases. The book is slow-going, no doubt about it, but you'll have a whole new mental toolset at the end.One caveat- this book is freely distributed in its entirety on MIT's website. I still bought a copy, though: who knows how long this internet thing will last, but SICP is going to be relevant forever.

Great book. Has changed my perspective on the subject. I would classify it as an advanced book in the subject of computer programming. If you have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of computer science I recommend reading this book.

One of my favorite textbooks from undergrad. It was used in my first CS class. It was first exposure to a language other than BASIC, so I acknowledge the bar was pretty low, but I was blown away.

The authors have an ambitious goal - to fundamentally change the way you think about computing. Scheme is used as a vehicle to illustrate how large, complex systems can be designed by abstraction. Several real-world examples are used: a picture language, a circuit simulator, a compiler and a PROLOG-like pattern matching language.To get a flavor of this book, search for "SICP Lecture 1a" in Google Video. It's the first of 20 lectures delivered by the authors of the book in 1986. If you decide to purchase the book, use it in conjunction with these lectures to get the complete SICP experience. You will come out of a smarter, wiser software engineer.Also, how often do you see visionary computer scientists like Peter Norvig and Paul Graham give 5 stars to a book?

I've worked through the first three chapters of exercises, and they are challenging and fun. I'm learning scheme so that I can get better at functional programming in general, mostly in Clojure and Javascript. Scheme is a perfect "teaching language", though, and I think that this book should be any aspiring programmer's first introduction to programming before they even touch a compiled language.
