(Kindle version) Lao-Tsu has been a regular companion of mine for 40 + years.It's always interesting to find new translations, although this far for me nothing has beaten the Swedish translation by Henriksson&Hwang ( only in Swedish, though).I think I've read most of the English translations, my favourite is the Lau translation published by Penguin.This translation by Stenudd is very much in quality and sharpness in par with my Swedish favourite.I rate this translation as absolutely brilliant, and definitely a must if you are a fan.The book is both chapters and commentaries.Commentaries can be very useful for someone who is not so familiar with the text, or wants a reflection on the chapters.For me as a frequent reader, I prefer to skip them(I know best anyway, don't I...;-)?)The text in this translation is so pregnant and sharp, that I just don't want to read about it, the joy of the text stands for itself.

His commentary is thorough but I disagree with some of his interpretations. I prefer Stephen Mitchell ' translation by far. I've heard Thomas Cleary ' translation is the best.

The author's explantions are very well written of Lao Tzu stories.

The 2071st translation is remarkably different!. The 2074th translation stands out as time well spent! The literary rendition of what was previously pure smut is great.

Great book if you want to compare the original Chinese scriptures with the English translations.

The book gave a good summary of the Global Economy but from a definite perspective, rather than from an even-handed assessment. It would have been more useful if the topics were treated objectively, including progressive and traditional valuations.

Globalization is evil. Multinational corporations are taking over. There, now you don't have to read this depressing antiglobalist screed. If you're looking for a fair, balanced, critical understanding of globalization, forget this book.This alarmist "Field Guide" features loose reasoning and selective statistics. Here's a howler: "In the US, NAFTA supporters argued that the deal would lead to a net increase of high-quality US jobs, as rapidly expanding exports created massive trade surpluses with Canada and Mexico. Just the opposite has happened. Between 1994 and 2003, US imports from the NAFTA partners grew far faster than US exports to those countries. As a result, the US trade deficit with Canada and Mexico ballooned from $13b to $92b" (p. 91). That's a non-sequitor: the authors begin talking about jobs, but slyly shift to trade, as if the latter statistic somehow proves the authors' point. What happened to jobs? The authors neglect to mention that under NAFTA from 1993 to 2001, US employment grew from 120M to 135M. Five years after NAFTA started, US unemployment hit a historic low of 3.8%, a level once considered unachievable (Smick 222).Unfortunately this tedious "Field Guide" presents only the negative side of globalization, and its biased use of statistics harms its own cause by diminishing its credibility. Try instead try Friedman's _The World is Flat_ or Smick's _The World is Curved_.

I had to read this book for my sociology class and googling the topics helped explain them better than the book did.

Quite an interesting read, containing lots of facts that could affect your life (which job categories are most at risk for outsourcing overseas, how Wal-Mart treats its employees badly and taxpayers suffer the consequences, disgustingly excessive pay for CEOs, the invasion of unregulated genetically modified food, ...). Many of the facts are eye-opening and I certainly moderated my personal pro-business views.Unfotrunately, the book is introductory (almost to a fault) as you can guess from the fact that the jacket brags about the book's cartoons. It is extremely one-sided, and its blatant pro-union propaganda can be annoying. Facts and statistics are presented but I got the feeling that many of the book's arguments could be undermined if the "whole story" were revealed (simply throwing in a citation should not take the place of complete presentation within the text). Finally, there are many completely unsupported statements of opinion inappropriately stuck into otherwise fact-based paragraphs, giving these opinions apparent legitimacy.Despite its shortcomings, this is an interesting book, and presents an easy way to learn about the World Bank and the IMF as (probably) seen by Third World people. After reading, I agree that the corporate-driven globalization we are now experiencing is flawed, but some of the alternatives promoted by this book (blanket amnesty to illegal aliens, total cancellation of poor-country debt, weakened protection of intellectual property rights, ...) appear equally ill-considered.

The title is catchy enough. I expected lots of facts and figures in tables and graphs that would illustrate international trade and finance. Was I surprised. There are facts and figures there, even pictures and cartoons. But the authors see the world differently. "The problem..." we are told, "...is not so much that the world is so tightly linked now...but that the links converge in such a small number of hands." The hands they're refering to belong to corporate executives and billionaires. An ongoing theme throughout the book is the old cliche' that the rich get richer while the poor get poorer.One thing different about the current process of globalization, the authors claim, "is that a number of poorer countries, led by China and Mexico, now have the infrastructure to house practically any industrial or service operation...." What's wrong with that? They object that "...Ford, Boeing, and other global corporations are now setting up state-of-the-art manufacturing plants in countries where wages and other costs are kept extremely low through repression." We can all agree that repression is a bad thing. We may differ on where it's happening. For instance, according to the index of economic freedom constructed by the Heritage Foundation (what the authors call a "corporate think tank") and the Wall Street Journal, China is "mostly unfree" (but not "repressed") and Mexico is "mostly free." "Repressed" countries include Zimbabwe, Iran, Cuba, Iraq, and North Korea. Corporate capitalism does not appear to be causing problems in those countries by any stretch of the imagination. Vietnam is among the repressed, but it's difficult to see how workers who produce sneakers for the Nike company would be better off if Nike weren't there. Much of the book is devoted to criticizing "globalization claims." Although some free traders will justifiably dismiss this criticism, in my view the authors' attacks will work to strenghthen the case for free trade. Put differently, any economist who wants practice defending free trade can find it reading this book. Warning: the bile may rise in you. To their credit the authors provide an abundance of endnotes to support their case. They offer some criticism a free trader would appreciate. For example they object to export subsidies and IMF bailouts of banks with troubled loans to developing countries. They even profess to reject protectionism. However the alternative they recommend, "fair trade," is better described as "managed trade." The authors minimize the role of consumers in the process of globalization. Corporations would not achieve their goals if consumers weren't buying their products. The authors also fail to recognize the importance of property rights in economic development. If the governments of poor countries established and protected property rights, the people would get wealthier. Given that these authors reject international trade and investment as a cause of our prosperity and cannot tolerate disparities of wealth, they'll always remain idealists with axes to grind.

A group in our high school had been planning a symposium on the global economy when our advisor suggested that we take a look at this book. "Field Guide" offers a clear, concise description of many of the global issues that confront citizens of both the industrialized and unindustrialized nations. To its credit, it offers both the pros and cons of many of the issues it discusses and offers a resource list for others to get involved. I encourage anyone interested global politics or economics to read this book, share it with a friend, and get involved!

Buckley (No Way to Treat a First Lady) presents an engaging introduction to the highlights of monumental Washington in this collection of walking tours. While some readers might have appreciated a stroll through some of the capital's less-visited quarters (his tours barely venture beyond the Mall), Buckley digs up enough historical tidbits about even greatest hits stops like the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and Washington Monument to let veteran tourists see them freshly. His approach-combining the stories of those who built Washington and the stories of those who ruled it-pays off in rich anecdotes about, for instance, Pierre L'Enfant, the city's designer, who died in poverty, and James McNeill Whistler, who created the Freer Gallery's Peacock Room in a defiant act of artistic license. It's useful, too, to have a guide who's a former Washington insider (Buckley worked as a speechwriter to Vice-president Bush during Reagan's first term) and actually knows what it's like to steal stationery from Air Force One. Buckley's tendency to let jokes tell the stories is occasionally confusing: for instance, he writes, "Congress immediately passed a law prohibiting vice-presidents from speaking in verse; it remains on the books today." It's so funny and makes you want to hop the first train to D.C. to see every landmark and visit all museums. A book that fits snugly in a purse or pocket, came in regal shape like its contents. Would order again since it's a great gift.

I'm currently planning a trip to DC this winter, and this book was recommended to me as a "must read" for anyone going to DC, or who just likes trivia or off-beat history. The book is full of walking tours centered around the mall - map included! I don't know that I'll retrace Christopher Buckley's steps, but the information he gave will certainly make my visit more enjoyable... providing that the lingering effects of the recent earthquake and hurricane won't get in the way.

I have not read anything by Christopher Buckley before, but I am, as of this book, a fan. Buckley offers a light-hearted romp through Washington, D.C. He's quite witty and a great writer. I also think he does a fine job of passing on some interesting tid-bits of information. It's kind of like a right-wing version of Vowell's "Assasination Vacation." She has more information, but Buckley is funnier.

Let's get to my main gripe about this book first. I didn't realize Mr. Buckley would constantly be pouring so much praise on the Reagans, the Bushes, the Cheneys et al ad nauseam. To call his treatment of these people partisan would be an understatement. On the other hand, he did get to page 117 of this slim volume before he attacked Clinton by name. He had warmed up earlier, however, by wondering what is wrong with politicians who come from Arkansas. Buckley apparently does like some Democratic politicians but only dead ones since he seems to like John and Robert Kennedy. At least he doesn't trash them.If you can work around all this gushing, when Mr. Buckley gets down to business and starts walking, he manages to give a lot of information about a truly beautiful and great city, sometimes with great wit. He can be quite funny and entertaining. In Washington an agenda means "sinister intentions, for example. I found out why the White House is so called, that Thomas Jefferson was a very poor speaker and that George Washington was the only president whose slaves were freed at his death.Mr. Buckey discusses the design and layout of Washington in some detail, does a good job I thought on The Vietnam Memorial and both the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. But by the time we had gotten to the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, I didn't expect much. Never mind that there is beautiful artwork here by both Robert Graham and George Segal, world class artists. That all goes unmentioned. Mr. Buckley remembers instead that Roosevelt was always spoken of in the family he grew up in as "that man" and Mrs. Roosevelt as "that woman." Well, in the family I grew up in they were kin to the "Holy Family" and remain so.Mr.Buckley finishes up with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Parts of this chapter are very moving. I must admit though that I keep coming back to that image of the Cheneys' appearance at a publication party for Lynne Cheney celebrating her children's book AMERICA-A PATRIOTIC PRIMER. I'm glad it was Buckley's night out and not mine.

I am neither ardent Republican nor Democrat. But, I am an ardent Christopher Buckley fan. I've read most of his books and find him to be unfailingly witty and insightful. And, if you've ever seen him doing his schtick in person, you'd realize that he doesn't take himself that seriously.So, if you scrutinize this book looking for evidence of partisanship, you're surely going to find it. But consider the way Buckley presents it: screaming across the room to get Dick Cheney's attention, he is self-aware enough to acknowledge that his behavior is a source of embarrassment to his children. And as for those who might criticize his penchant for name-dropping, consider the following passage:"For two years I had a White House pass that allowed me everywhere except, of course, the second-floor residence. In 2006, Ford brought in Alan Mulally to help rescue Ford Motor Company from itself. Mulally’s first task was to change Ford’s management style from “every man for himself” to “every man for Ford”. Ford management’s transition from hiding problems (so you didn’t get fired) to acknowledging problems (so you could fix them) could only happen as the braver managers took the leap of faith that Mulally wouldn’t fire them for admitting the serious problems that existed within their own areas of responsibility. Reading about that process was interesting on its own; but, as I was reading, I was also thinking “these guys don’t yet know that the Great Recession is coming”. That event took the drama of Ford’s attempts to survive its past missteps to a whole new level. Wonderful, interesting and exciting book about Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company, the auto industry and corporate America.

Growing up in the Detroit area I've seen Ford both at their best and their worst. Their incredible transformation over the last decade was nothing short of incredible. This reads more like an intrigue novel than a history lesson and really holds your attention. This, combined with Once Upon a Car and Taken for a Drive are some of the best auto industry books I've ever read.

I have to confess that this book was a complete stunner. I purchased it hoping to get a decent idea of what Ford went through during the economic crisis of 2006-2009, but this book proved to be a detailed, engrossing story that I could barely put down. Anyone who follows the news is well aware of the debacle that was the US auto industry in 2007, but Hoffman provides such depth in describing the issues facing the industry and the corporate in-fighting that it almost reads like fiction.You are instantly endeared to Bill Ford as a man that can put aside his own ego for the good of the company he loves, and you root for Alan Mullaly throughout the book even though we already know Ford made it through to the other side. His belief in his system and his ability to completely change the corporate culture of a multi-national company are truly inspiring.Outside the story itself, there are all sorts of interesting factoids to be found such as how the common stock was set up to ensure the Ford family maintained voting rights, and how neither Chrysler or General Motors would've survived if President Obama had stuck to President Bush's original requirements. The book delivers on so many different levels. I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in business or just an interest in a great story.

Author Bryce Hoffman details the incredible American comeback story of Ford Motor Company. His focus is largely on Alan Mulally, whom Ford hired away from Boeing in September 2006 to take over as their New CEO. Hoffman chronicles the events leading to Bill Ford's decision to step down as CEO and go outside the company and the auto industry to hire Mulally.The author describes the changes Mulally made to Ford's corporate culture as well as the approach he took to changing the mentality and necessity to work together for the survival and future of the company. Hoffman narrates the risks the company had to take to be able to keep it running. I especially relished the narrative of the three auto industry CROw's appearance before the Congressional and Senate hearings on the fall of 2008, when General Motors and Chrysler were asking for a federal bailout to keep those two automakers alive.Hoffman takes the reader into 2011 at a time when Ford was back in the black and on much stronger ground. He gives Mulally much of the credit for this amazing turnaround, but also praised Bill Ford and the other heirs of Henry Ford. Hoffman gives credit to many others within Ford for their courage and contributions to the comeback. This was the most interesting and enlightening books I've read about the American auto industry.

I'm enjoying reading about Alan Mulally.CEOs, CFO's, COOs, mid-level managers and especially consultants--there's something for everyone in this book.Some of my favorite points:1. Bill Ford was humble and willing to step away and letting someone else take over. He was great in keeping the family unified during thick and thin.2. What can we say about Mulally that hasn't been written elsewhere? I loved reading about the BPR process and his One-Ford strategy. He didn't just clean house either. He made a change here and there. A couple leaders left on their own. A couple were elevated. There's much we can learn about Mulally's leadership style.3. The bailouts - I found myself getting frustrated as I re-lived the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Ford was at a complete disadvantage once the government took control of GM. Yet, Ford stuck to their plan.4. And speaking of that recession, it's as though Mulally had to navigate not one, but two turnarounds.That one and their serious issues when he first came on board in 2006.5. We know the rest of the story. Mark Fields is now the new CEO. Mulally embraced his abilities from day one. So this has a great ending. The fire didn't go out through a changing of the guard.I'm still amazed at how one person could change a leviathan in a stodgy industry. Sure, he built a team and had the full support of the Chairman. But this guy was/is unreal.I thought Gordon Bethune was legendary. I think Mulally's accomplishments are even more impressive since he turned around Boeing too.I also recommend the Audible version too as I listened to it while reading the Kindle version.

I had read the authors first book "With the Old Breed" and thought it was the best book of its kind I had ever read, so naturally I had to read China Marine. This one seemed shorter than the first, and I read the whole thing quickly, and was not disappointed. I think "Sledgehammer" had a unique perspective on his time in China as well as more time to reflect on not just what was happening around him, but also within him as a result of witnessing the horrors of war. This comes out very well in China Marine as Sledge describes his experiences in context of where he has been and where he knows he needs to go (back to a "normal" civilian life). One thing that stood out to me was the authors appreciation for everything around him. The beauty of China, his fascination with the people and the good friends he made while there.The epilogue was my favorite part as I thought it was the most personal, and provided additional insight into the mind of a great man. He talked about moving on, but also the lasting impacts of the war. His disdain for people complaining about trivial unimportant things, and what worked for him to accept (not forget) what he had been through.

China Marine is a "must read" for anyone interested in the experience of soldiers returning from war. My father in law and mother in law were U.S. Army officers, and veterans of the European theater in WWII. Although far removed, both in rank and overall experience compared to enlisted infantry marines in the Pacific, I have a new understanding of my inlaws after reading this book. My mother in law was a mobile unit surgical nurse who was shipped to the front fresh out of nursing school. She told me once that they were close enough to battle that they heard the bombi g and shelling, and would have to pack up and move at a moments' notice. There's a photo of her in the opening of her tent with that "thousand yard stare".My father in law often spoke of how unfair it was that he and the other officers were fed warm food while the enlisted men had to eat far inferior rations in poor conditions. Now I've seen the other side and knowing the man my father in law was, I understand why it bothered him so much.This book, as well as its predecessor, With The Old Breed, says all the things our friends and relatives never tell us. I strongly wish they were required reading in U.S. History classes in every high school in America.In the epilogue, Sledgehammer mentions the beginnings of revisionist history, and sadly it has only progressed to the point that WWII was barely mentioned in my children's education in the public school system.I am giving both of these books to every one of my family members.

E. B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" is by common consent one of the finest -- if not the finest -- account of the life of a combat infantryman in World War II. At Pelieu and Okinawa, Sledge was one of only 10 men in his Marine company of 240 to escape being wounded or killed. "China Marine" is the follow-up to "With the Old Breed," a lesser work but one that tells of what happened to Sledge after the war.With Sledge's experience, one would have thought that he would have been among the first among the military to be demobilized after the end of the war with Japan -- but no, he and his colleagues were sent to China to disarm the Japanese soldiers there and to maintain order in several northern Chinese cities. This is Sledge's account of the six months he spent in China. His view is that of a Private First Class -- but an educated and sophisticated PFC, the son of a medical doctor from Mobile, Alabama, and an outstanding writer. He delighted in Peking, fresh food, a clean bunk, light duties, and friendship with the sophisticated Soong family -- but the danger from attack by communist armies was always there.Sledge goes on to tell of the trauma of his discharge from the Marines and homecoming to Mobile and, briefly, his long years of struggle with what we call today Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. While the reader would expect the author to be on his way back to the United States, it does't turn out that way. While he does learn the language and befriends a family, the real story, the difficult one for those not having served, is dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.Sledge gets caught up in revolution in China pitting Mao Tse Tung against the forces of Chiang Kai-shek. However, while these events are certainly important and there was danger in being there, if you're looking for battlefield action, the reader will be disappointed. But there's a more important aspect to the book that will not disappoint, though it should be saddening.We know Sledge the soldier from his previous book. China Marine shows us the toll on the soldier. The reader can feel the pain and anguish the author feels and that makes it worth reading. A short but powerful book.

Chapters (paraphrased titles for brevity) include (1) Equipping Your Boat (2) Keeping Warm, Keeping Cool, (3) Cost of Cruising (4) Cash Flow (5) Mail on the Go (6) Doctors/Health Care (7) Liveaboard Pet (8) Laundry (9) Earning $$$ Underway and more. I believe it to be a fairly good overview of the topic -- better than many as a matter of fact. This couple is not living the Pardey life, but has chosen a more (better!) complicated lifestyle. They balance nicely their wishes for the "goodies" along with the inherent repair issues which go along with those upgrades to life.

If you're like me and like paper maps, this is a good one. It is very comprehensive in that is shows a lot of information but it is still pretty easy to find the things you will likely be looking for, and it gives a good, clear overview of London. For minute to minute navigation, I used google maps on my phone (which is very good at telling you where tube stops are and which trains to use and transfers to make), but I really liked this map for getting the big picture.

Got this for a gift for my dad, we are taking a trip to London next summer. I have no doubt that he will be looking at this map while everyone else is using the map on their phones

Handy size, has many landmarks but not as many as I would like. Good price. I use it to be oriented while reading and watching British tv, so the paucity of landmarks is a fairly serious flaw for me.

I bought this Collins London Map as a back-up for my AZ LONDON VISITORS GUIDE AND ATLAS. This fold-out paper map (like a road map) only has bare bones information. The London Tube map on the back is impossible to read since the scale is almost microscopic. Do yourself a huge favor and get the above AZ map (see attached image); it is a compact and durable 112 page booklet, has 5 times the information, and is much easier to handle and read.Visiting London since 1981.

Loved this book! The type was large enough and the book small enough. We carried it around with us in London. The map was very useful.

Loved the small folding size, unfortunately it cuts off Kensington which is where we will stay other then that it will come in handy... 4stars because the tube map is too small to read

Okay for the price, but really only shows zone one of the city and the type is prohibitively small on the tube map. However it is compact!
