I'm a HUGE Steig fan. His books for children are just as much fun for the adults reading them to the tots. Dr. De Soto and his wife are smart, funny and willing to take on the risk to treat a fox who might just eat them after treatment -- but they have a terrific surprise in store for him that shows they're no dummies. Fun stuff and you cannot beat the illustrations.
These books are excellent for teaching young readers about the elements of story writing. It clearly portrays the issue, solutions, and moral take away. Would definitely recommend! Hope this helps.
I loved reading this to my daughter regularly in the mid eighties. She loved it as well. The lesson is compassion and kindness combined with developing a plan to protect yourself - not being foolhardy considering circumstances - without sounding preachy. I gave it to my dentist years ago when he had young daughters. I have to say I preferred the original illustration on the cover, although this is adorable too.
My children and grandchildren have all loved this book, especially when the fox tries to say "Thank you!" I purchased this book for my dentist. He had asked me some questions after pulling a tooth and putting gauze in my mouth. I told him that I felt like the fox in Dr DeSoto when I tried to talk. He didn't know what I was talking about so I bought him this book. He enjoyed the book and has not asked me anymore questions when he had his tools in my mouth!!
Dr. DeSoto, a mouse, has a standing policy of never treating predators at his dental practice. One day, a fox appears and pleads for help, weeping so that Dr. and Mrs. DeSoto take pity on him and agree to replace his abscessed tooth. While helping him they realize he intends to eat them after his treatment is finished, and they devise a clever way to outwit him while still finishing the job.The story is satisfying on many levels. It builds on the principle of Aesop's fable of the crane and the wolf, showing that evil people will return evil for good. But the dentist and his wife demonstrate wisdom in doing good for this evil character, refusing to go back on their commitment yet not denying their real danger. In working together, this husband and wife team demonstrate courage, unity, and mutual care, exemplifying the kind of marriage I want to be defined as normal for my children.Steig tells the story in an understated way, with effective dialogue and gentle humor. Children will wait anxiously to find out how the two mice will resolve their problem, and will greatly enjoy the fox's discomfiture when he is defeated. This is an excellent early-reader story about how to deal with evil in the everyday world.
This is the story of Doctor De Soto, a mouse who is a dentist to other animals. All other animals except "dangerous" animals, that is -- dangerous to mice. Dr De Soto and his assistant, Mrs. De Soto, will not (Repeat: Not!) treat cats, no matter what dental pain a cat may be in.But then one day a fox (Dangerous Animal!) stands out on the street beneath the dentist's office and wails in pain from a sore tooth. Even though they know they shouldn't do so, the De Soto's allow the fox into their office and Dr. De Soto extracts the sore tooth. The fox immediately thinks of eating the two mice. But Dr. De Soto has built a new gold tooth for the fox, and the tooth can't be installed until the next day, so the fox puts off eating the mice until tomorrow.Dr. De Soto and his wife are up all night, knowing that when the dentist inserts the gold tooth, the fox will eat them. But then Dr. De Soto gets a brilliant idea. The next day, before he installs the fox's tooth, he asks the fox if he would like to be the very first recipient of a new preparation which will prevent cavities or any kind of tooth pain ever again. The fox readily agrees and Dr. De Soto applies the formula to each tooth. Then he tells the fox to close his jaws tight and keep them closed for a full minute. The result is delicious -- for the reader and the De Soto's, but not for the fox.
I loved reading this book to my kids (all now grown) back in the day. When my dentist let me know she was expecting I bought this for her so she could read it to her child.Great book, nice story, very good art -- as expected from a Caldecott Award winner.
Purchased for my 4 year old grandson, whose mom is a dentist. They already had a paperback copy, but love having a hard cover. The story itself is so fun. He loves the book.
