A good read, and you don't have to read it in the book order, to enjoy

*WARNING* for mature reader due to adult situationsMikaroz is a gargoyle and a guard on the space station. Mikaroz knows the odd little human prisoner is off limits. Mikaroz has to fight his attraction, but he can try to make sure she eats.Greta may be sitting a prison cell in space, but she feels no remorse for killing the slimy alien that was trying to rape her. Greta is so hungry, but the nice, gray, winged guard doesn't understand that the food he brings makes her sick. Greta can't understand the odd attraction she has toward the gentle giant. Is it hunger? Is it because she's been in captivity for to long.I luved this story! There is a book mentioned that comes before this one where Mikaroz is first introduced, but I didn't read it and I don't feel as though I missed anything. Gargoyles are great is stories, and this one has an almost child like quality to him when first around Greta. I think Ms. Phillips has done a great job in making a gargoyle threatening, but not scary....loving, but not a push over. I highly recommend this book for any adult who likes goyles and HEAs.

This is a quick read, a delicious romance with a H/h as sweet as can be! Mikaroz is a gem, a diamond in the rough. He’s big and strong, with an intimidating appearance, yet he treats Greta with gentleness and respect. I love his reaction to his first ‘keess’ and different expressions Greta uses. Greta is no slouch! She can’t behave unkindly to the one person, in this hideous situation, who has been kind to her. She’s more than willing to defend herself and her Mikaroz, if need be. There is plenty of action; they’re in a very dangerous position. But through it all, weaves a beautiful love story!

Love this series! Mikaroz is a guard on the station where Greta is being held for killing her master who tried to rape her! She has been unable to eat any of the food given to prisoners since it makes her ill. Mikaroz worries for her. When the station is being taken over her life is in his claws, can she trust him to save her? I absolutely loved Mikaroz and Greta together!

I enjoyed this very much. It's fast paced instalove with just the best gargoyle ever. Our Texas girl knows how to handle herself and while she gives in to the emotions and the trauma of being kidnapped by aliens and everything is AWFUL, she still can pull it back and be the heroine I love reading. Thank you so much!

I love me a good gargoyle story and this one was a fun ride. The heroine and hero are both very likable, specially the wonderful gray big guy. LOLThere’s action, hot tension and love. I REALLY hope the author will bring us more stories about the alien gargoyles.Re-read material, recommended.

The story was short and sweet but it holds your attention from beginning to end with enough action and drama to keep you on your toes. A beautiful love story with awesome characters that won't disappointed in any way and so ready to read the next book in the series.

Loved this book! honey really has a way of drawing you in and making you feel for the characters!

One Proud Penny, by Randy Siegel

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Ever wondered about the life of a penny? This made-from-copper narrator is happy to share. Told in a breezy tone, from the perspective of a penny, this engaging story is sprinkled with tidbits about the penny's history. For instance, the narrator's great-uncle, from 1943, was made out of steel, "like Superman!" The narrator tries its best to embody the advice of Abraham Lincoln, whose face and memorial appear on the front and back of the coin: "Whatever you are, be a good one." Pen-and-ink cartoon illustrations in combination with photographs of actual pennies capture the humorous tone. The book touches on the controversy of whether to discontinue the penny, though the narrator is understandably biased. Additional material at the end outlines a history of the U.S. monetary system and its ties to the start of the nation. VERDICT A light introduction to money, starring the often underappreciated penny. A worthy addition to lower elementary school collections.—Suzanne Myers Harold, formerly at Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR

What a cute book!Cute way to understand how money moves around while learning some good facts.

Excellent and fast service.

Second graders loved this book!

The life of a penny is featured in this book. He's a proud penny. He has been everywhere: Philadelphia (where he was born in 1983), Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Puerto Rico, and Portland, Maine and Oregon. He has had many adventures. He didn't like the year he spent on the floor of a garage in Green Bay or in a sewer drain in a busy street. He has bounced around in washing machines many times, and sucked up in vacuum cleaners.Children will enjoy thinking about the life of a penny as they read this story. He likes Lincoln who is on his front and the Lincoln Memorial on his back. He quotes Lincoln: "whatever you are be a good one". That's a good motto for life for children to think about. Lincoln is his favorite president. At the end of the story, he just got grabbed. Maybe he will come to your house sometimes. This is an upbeat story children will enjoy. You can use it to then count some pennies, and teach the value of coins: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters etc. You can do some addition and subtraction problems with them, using pennies as counters. This book makes pennies irresistible. The illustrator uses mainly line type drawings with the colorful penny taking center stage on each page. Afterwards you could do some art projects with pennies by gluing them on cardboard paper and drawing around them. A class could write a story about being a penny and the adventures that penny might have.Age wise this book might be most interesting to mature four-year-olds to children in 2nd grade. It's an original tale, heads and tails.

Told in the voice of the penny itself, this picture book follows the life of a penny in public circulation. With a humorous tone, the book explains that pennies are often ignored or lost and then whisked back into use again. The metals that modern pennies are made of are compared with older pennies who would have been this penny’s parents and grandparents. Throughout the book, the journey of being spent and then being spent again and again is told. It’s enough to make all of us value the humble penny much more.Siegel’s text is filled with humor and wonderful moments. Like the mourning of being sucked into vacuum cleaners multiple times or the pride of knowing that even though pennies are worth less than dollar bills, they are much stronger and last longer. There is a great flow to the book, moving from one place to the next in a series of hops and jumps that work to set a nice pace. The tone is one of information mixed with simple life lessons making this very readable.Bloch’s illustrations are almost comic format but without the framing. He has dynamic loose line that creates characters who pass through the penny’s life quickly. Real pennies and other currency are used in the illustrations.Funny and informative: that’s my 2 cents. Appropriate for ages 4-6.

This is the perfect book to keep the penny around since the US government is flirting with the unjust idea of getting rid of the penny.Quirky and cool, this little book is narrated by the Penny himself showing us why he is so important.Written by Randy Siegel, illustrated by Serge Bloch and published as a Neal Porter Book by Roaring Brook Press.#PB #biography #humor

This a really cute story. It is written from the perspective of a 30+ year old penny that has been many places in its lifetime. My children love searching for coins on the ground and were tickled by this penny's adventures.

This is such a cute book! Teachers and kids will love it! The illustrations use the penny as main body with cartoon drawings added. This is a good mix of fiction (with a talking penny), and nonfiction (with facts like how pennies are made, how they’re used, and their history). Penny’s hero is Abe Lincoln, of course, and he takes Abe’s advice to heart, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” Read this book to make sense of cents! All puns intended!

This is a terrible textbook. The book manages to be overly verbose yet simultaneously too shallow to convey any meaningful knowledge. The author's style is dry and lacks impact, sapping the excitement out of embedded systems. Wolf may be knowledgeable, but she is entirely unable to pass that knowledge on to her readers. The text is rife with errors, both technical and grammatical. This includes examples explicitly designed to clarify a point, which are consequently become even more confusing. It is hard to believe this is a 4th edition. The editors clearly got paid to fall asleep to Wolf's coma-inducing writing style. The author has chosen to make extensive use of UML diagrams, but these often include a questionable choice of components with inconsistent/unintuitive associations. More than once, I was more confused about an example architecture after reviewing the associated UML. Similarly, most of the exercises are lazy, existing more as chapter padding than as actual aids in understanding.Instructors, if you care at all about your students, please stop selecting this text for your courses. If you're learning on your own, pick up a more practical volume on embedded systems (e.g., Making Embedded Systems: Design Patterns for Great Software) and separate texts on operating systems / computer architecture.I plan to sell this as soon as my class is over.

This book was filled with errors, and the solution manual had many errors as well. Trying to learn from this book was more frustrating than enlightening.Even when the book wasn't flat out wrong about something, it gave incomplete descriptions of principles, such as using equations without explaining what some variables mean, or not giving equations at all, then referencing the non-existent equation.I constantly found myself referencing other textbooks, or the internet for more complete explanations. Overall, this book is one of the worst textbooks I have ever read. I have a hard time understanding why a professor would ever choose to use this book, as there countless books around that are better. Honestly, not using any book would be better than using this book.

the book is a total miss, and has nothing to do with real computer Science

BEYOND THE GREAT SNOW MOUNTAINS   WHEN THE BURIAL was complete, she rode with her son into the hills.   The Go-log tribesmen, sharing her sorrow for their lost leader, stood aside and allowed her to go. Lok-sha had been a great man and too young to die.   Only in the eyes of Norba and his followers did she detect the triumph born of realization that nothing now stood between him and tribal control. Nothing but a slender woman, alien to their land, and Kulan, her fourteen-year-old son.   There was no time to worry now, nor was there time for grief. If ever they were to escape, it must be at once, for it was unlikely such opportunity would again offer itself.   It had been fifteen years since the plane in which she was leaving China crashed in the mountains near Tosun Nor, killing all on board but herself. Now, as if decreed by fate, another had come, and this one landed intact.   Shambe had brought the news as Lok-sha lay dying, for long ago the far-ranging hunter had promised if ever another plane landed, he would first bring the news to her.   If the fierce Go-log tribesmen learned of the landing, they would kill the survivors and destroy the plane. To enter the land of the Go-log was to die.   It was a far land of high, grass plateaus, snowcapped mountains, and rushing streams. There among the peaks were born three of the greatest rivers of Asia—the Yellow, the Yangtze, and the Mekong—and there the Go-log lived as they had lived since the time of Genghis Khan.   Splendid horsemen and savage fighters, they lived upon their herds of yaks, fat-tailed sheep, horses, and the plunder reaped from caravans bound from China to Tibet.   Anna Doone, born on a ranch in Montana, had taken readily to the hard, nomadic life of the Go-log. She had come to China to join her father, a medical missionary, and her uncle, a noted anthropologist. Both were killed in Kansu by the renegade army that had once belonged to General Ma. Anna, with two friends, attempted an escape in an old plane.   Riding now toward this other aircraft, she recalled the morning when, standing beside her wrecked plane, she had first watched the Go-log approach. She was familiar with their reputation for killing interlopers, but she had a Winchester with a telescopic sight and a .45-caliber Colt revolver.   Despite her fear, she felt a burst of admiration for their superb horsemanship as they raced over the plain. Seeing the rifle ready in her hands, they drew up sharply, and her eyes for the first time looked upon Lok-sha.   Only a little older than her own twenty-one years, he was a tall man with a lean horseman’s build, and he laughed with pure enjoyment when she lifted the rifle. She was to remember that laugh for a long time, for the Go-log were normally a somber people.   Lok-sha had the commanding presence of the born leader of men, and she realized at once that if she were to survive, it would be because he wished it.   He spoke sharply in his own tongue, and she replied in the dialect of Kansu, which fortunately he understood.   “It is a fine weapon,” he said about the rifle.   “I do not wish to use it against the Go-log. I come as a friend.”   “The Go-log have no friends.”   A small herd of Tibetan antelope appeared on the crest of a low ridge some three hundred yards away, looking curiously toward the crashed plane.   She had used a rifle since she was a child, killing her first deer when only eleven. Indicating the antelope, she took careful aim and squeezed off her shot. The antelope bounded away, but one went to its knees, then rolled over on its side.   The Go-log shouted with amazement, for accurate shooting with their old rifles was impossible at that range. Two of the riders charged off to recover the game, and she looked into the eyes of the tall rider.   “I have another such rifle, and if we are friends, it is yours.”   “I could kill you and take them both.”   She returned his look. “They,” she said, indicating the others, “might take it from me. You would not, for you are a man of honor, and I would kill you even as they killed me.”   She had no doubt of her position, and her chance of ever leaving this place was remote. Whatever was done, she must do herself.   He gestured toward the wreck. “Get what you wish, and come with us.”   Her shooting had impressed them, and now her riding did also, for these were men who lived by riding and shooting. Lok-sha, a jyabo or king of the Go-log people, did not kill her. Escape being impossible, she married him in a Buddhist ceremony, and then to satisfy some Puritan strain within her, she persuaded Tsan-Po, the lama, to read over them in Kansu dialect the Christian ceremony.   Fortunately, the plane had not burned, and from it she brought ammunition for the rifles, field glasses, clothing, medicines, and her father’s instrument case. Best of all, she brought the books that had belonged to her father and uncle.   Having often assisted her father, she understood the emergency treatment of wounds and rough surgery. This knowledge became a valuable asset and solidified her position in the community.   As soon as Anna’s son was born, she realized the time would come when, if they were not rescued, he would become jyabo, so she began a careful record of migration dates, grass conditions, and rainfall. If it was in her power, she was going to give him the knowledge to be the best leader possible.   Lok-sha was sharply interested in all she knew about the Chinese to the east, and he possessed the imagination to translate the lessons of history into the practical business of command and statecraft. The end had come when his horse, caught on a severe, rocky slope, had fallen, crushing Lok-sha’s chest.   She had been happy in the years she’d spent as his wife, certainly she was better off than she would have been as a refugee in the civil war that gripped much of China or as a prisoner of the Japanese. But as happy as she had learned to be, as safe as she had finally found herself, Anna never forgot her home, nor ceased to long for the day when she might return.   Now, her thoughts were interrupted by Shambe’s appearance. “The plane is nearby,” he said, “and there are two men.”   Shambe was not only Lok-sha’s best friend, but leader of the Ku-ts’a, the bodyguard of the jyabo, a carefully selected band of fighting men.   They rode now, side by side, Kulan, Shambe, and herself. “You will leave with the flying men?” Shambe asked. “And you will take the jyabo also?”   Startled, Anna Doone glanced at her son, riding quietly beside her. Of course . . . what had she been thinking of? Her son, Kulan, was jyabo now . . . king of six thousand tents, commander of approximately two thousand of the most dangerous fighting men in Asia!   But it was ridiculous. He was only fourteen. He should be in school, thinking about football or baseball. Yet fourteen among the Go-log was not fourteen among her own people. Lok-sha, against her bitter protests, had carried Kulan into battle when he was but six years old, and during long rides over the grasslands had taught him what he could of the arts of war and leadership.   Her son jyabo? She wished to see him a doctor, a scientist, a teacher. It was preposterous to think of him as king of a savage people in a remote land. Yet deep within her something asked a question: How important would baseball be to a boy accustomed to riding a hundred miles from dawn to dusk, or hunting bighorn sheep among the highest peaks?   “We shall regret your going,” Shambe said sincerely, “you have been long among us.”   And she would regret losing him, too, for he had been a true friend. She said as much, said it quietly and with sincerity.   When she heard of the plane, her thoughts had leaped ahead, anticipating their homecoming. She had taken notes of her experiences and could write a book, and she could lecture. Kulan was tall and strong and could receive the education and opportunities that he had missed.   Yet she had sensed the reproof in Shambe’s tone; Shambe, who had been her husband’s supporter in his troubles with Norba, a chief of a minor division of the Khang-sar Go-log.   Over their heads the sky was fiercely blue, their horses’ hooves drummed upon the hard, close-cropped turf . . . there were few clouds. Yes . . . these rides would be remembered. Nowhere were there mountains like these, nowhere such skies.   When they came within sight of the plane, the two men sprang to their feet, gripping their rifles.   She drew up. “I am Anna Doone, and this is Kulan, my son.”   The older man strode toward her. “This is amazing! The State Department has been trying to locate you and your family for years! You are the niece of Dr. Ralph Doone, are you not?”   “I am.”   “My name is Schwarzkopf. Your uncle and I were associated during his work at the Merv Oasis.” He glanced at Shambe, and then at Kulan. “Your son, you said?”   She explained the crashed plane, her marriage to Lok-sha, his death, and her wish to escape. In turn, they told her of how they had seized the plane and escaped from the Communist soldiers. Their landing had been made with the last of their fuel.

I'm a big fan of adventure stories. I've been wanting to have some of Louis L'Amour's adventure stories, I'm a big fan of his westerns, some of the best I've ever read or watched on film, and his advenyure stories are not behind that.

I love Louis L'Amore but this one is not one of my favorites

My husband loves these books

Interesting stories that I never knew Louis L'amour wrote, the man was a prolific and a very enjoyable writer. Stories are very thought provoking and entertaining.

Somehow the writing is not as enjoyable as the westerns. Im going to try his crime stories next and see if his feel is just for westerns.

Purchased this as a gift for my father in law. He was excited to receive.

Great author, great book

love western short stories.

Always purchase a yearly calendar diary from Peter pauper series. Just liked the cover drawing.

Second year in using this brand of planner. Holds up wonderfully. Mine from last year looks brand new. Plenty of room to write notes on each day.

It gives you the illusion that the extra months you get will be for 2020. Not the case. They were from 2018. It does the job though.

Looks very good. Worth the money.

A good quality planner. I would order others from this manufacturer.

Great weekly/daily planner, fits in my purse. Has a fabric bookmark and closure! This is my second year getting this brand and I plan to by for life!

Way better than I thought I absolutely love love love it

This book is what I consider a "Universal Problem Solver" for its subject, which is how land forces fought World War II in the South Pacific. The battles for Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Solomons have justly passed into legend in the United States and Australia (and New Zealand to a smaller extent) as a turning point of World War II. They were among the harshest battlefield settings of a war that was noted for ghastly scenes of battle -- thick, disease-infested jungles where large bodies of armed men could easily get lost and run into headhunting cannibals.A Japanese general died in a river flood. Hordes of Japanese troops were felled by the deadly combination of the miserable terrain and their inability to supply their men with food and medicine. On Guadalcanal, the American Marines were abandoned soon after they landed, and had to survive on captured Japanese rations for weeks -- even putting the lone Japanese bulldozer to work to finish Henderson Field. The dozer's operator slept by the vehicle with his rifle -- nobody was allowed near him or it.The book is divided into sections: how the battles were fought, the social roots and technological tools of the combatants, how they operated tactically, and how the men thought, felt, and endured their battles. Everything from medical care to machine-guns are covered, with interesting notes about how US Marines created fake Japanese "war flags" to sell to gullible US Sailors that they believed had let them down.A good chunk of the book is how the cultures of the various armies affected how they fought the South Pacific War, which was critical. One point that Professor Bergerud makes is that the US Army had become obsessed with and mastered large-scale logistics -- if Hitler asked American generals to prepare a plan for the invasion of Russia, the answer would have been mind-numbing but critical essays on high-viscosity motor oil and anti-freeze instead of crackling Prussian Generalstab arrows on a map, leading to Leningrad and Moscow. The Americans understood that an army had to be supplied to win.Touched With Fire is a masterly and detailed work, focusing like a laser on the land crucible of the Pacific war. This will tell you nearly everything you will want or need to know about that war, who fought it, how, and why. Highly recommended.

One of the finest accounts of war in the South Pacific around. Not a literal history - there is a good overview of the war i the South pacific but it is really about the three armies that fought the ground war (Australia, Japan, and the US) , how they fought it, and what conditions were like fighting it. Gives a fair account of each Army. Ever see pictures of the war i the South Pacific taken after the initial landings and the men look like animals? There is a reason for that: a truly inhospitable, unforgiving climate and terrain.

The superb account rendered so graphically in this book educates a new generation of readers as to the horrific practical realities involved in the Allied island-hopping strategy employed by the Allies in waging the Pacific campaign during World War Two. Indeed, while the specific individual battles often involved far fewer ground troops and were much smaller in scale than what occurred in the European theater of the war, the ferocity of the opposition and the relative number of casualties were staggering. Thus Eric Bergerud's gripping recounting of the incredible details involved with the war in the South Pacific in "Touched With Fire: The Land War In The South Pacific" reminds us of the terrible costs associated with that campaign. This was truly a campaign requiring a total re-education of the American military involved. Starting with the disastrous lessons of the quite different realities of jungle warfare first experienced on Guadalcanal, the Allied command had to learn to adapt to the extremely tenacious, ingenious, and almost indefatigable efforts of the island's Japanese defenders, who could subsist on a little water and rice and move through the jungles with much great ease and skill than could we. No one was prepared for the sustained levels of ferocity with which the Japanese fought, usually to the death, over these small atolls that they had to recognize they could not hold onto forever. Yet they fought on.The book recounts the many ways in which the war in the Pacific was different from that waged in Europe, and is organized around several themes such as terrain, climate, diseases such as dysentery, etc. in illustrating how the very different negative circumstances surrounding the island hopping strategy affected and constrained our ability (as well as those of the Japanese) to fight effectively in such an environment. Of course, as the author maintains, the Allies learned very quickly; they needed to in order to survive. As so well described in Ronald Spector's "Eagle Against The Sun", the Japanese were incredibly ingenious in devising ways to use topography, indigenous materials, and a willingness to "`rough-it" to build virtually impregnable walls of resistance to the oncoming invaders. This is a very well written, passionately argued, and absolutely entertaining book to read. The author has done a remarkable job in documenting and substantiating his notions and theories, and I found myself surprised at how well some of his more provocative and controversial ideas are supported by the data he employs. This is an eminently worthwhile book, a wonderful addition to the growing library of titles exploring the realities of the war in the Pacific, and one I would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the gritty details of the Allied `island to island' war against the Japanese. Enjoy!

This is truly a great narrative. It gave a large and broad picture of the South Pacific and its challenges, which was helpful for my own much more narrowly-focused research on the same subject matter. I regret that I only became aware of it a short time ago, despite its original publication in the mid-1990s, and this was only by a lucky catch. That's too bad, because there are some remarkable first-person accounts included in the text. It reads fast and is pretty accurate.

As a life long reader of World War II history, particularly of the war in the Pacific, I can safely say that Touched By Fire is one of the best books I have ever read on the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns. I would go as far as to call it a "must read" for any student of the war in the Pacific. I learned things from this book that I never knew before, even after 40 years of reading about the war. Don't miss this one folks.

Love the book. This was even better than the first Foxcraft book. Can't wait for the next one. I'm a big fan of the warrior series and to find out Inbali Iserles is one of the authors for the Warrior books makes sense as there does seem to be a feeling of similar writing styles. I hope the third installment will be out soon.

I read THE TAKEN and loved it and was even more impressed with the sequel THE ELDERS. Beautifully written, and with a wonderful story line. I especially loved the author's great insight into fox behavior, which includes a fantastic look at the world through the eyes of foxes! I am a photographer who has spent over ten years observing and photographing foxes and I found although this is a work of fiction and fantasy the behaviors and character of foxes rang true. These books are not only great entertaining reading for both children and adults, but will make people love and appreciate this often misunderstood animal! Highly recommended and can't wait for the sequel. Well done!

I have finished book one and two and I dying for the 3rd now. This has been a very good read and had no problem keeping my interest. I have ADHD and have a hard time concentrating wile reading. But not with this one! Well done to the writer and her work, aside from erin hunter this is one of my new favorite authors! I really hope book three won't be the last one, there is so much going on between all the characters Isla's search for her brother Pirie, Jana and the rest of the elders, the mage's army of taken. and the suspense between Isla and Siffrin is killing me.

I feel that once you've read the first book and you understand the terms used in the book that book one and book 2 are actually great reads. It really forces you to use your imagination which is a nice break for your brain in the world that we live in. very creative writing.

My 10 year old read it in 2 days, and loved it. Now he wants more books like this, and he's not an avid reader.

Phenomenal book for kids and adults. I would guess a 5th/6th grade reading level? Fantastic series and author! If you haven't read her books, you are truly missing out!!

My jaded 13-yr-old suddenly became an enamored reader again and started talking about The Elders with sparkling eyes. I'm so thrilled to have found such engrossing books.Inbali Iserles could be the next JK Rowling.

Our 9 year old loves these books. They’re are very well writing from the animals point of view. She is supposed to read 30 min every day. With these books it’s easy to get her to do that!

I'm a HUGE Steig fan. His books for children are just as much fun for the adults reading them to the tots. Dr. De Soto and his wife are smart, funny and willing to take on the risk to treat a fox who might just eat them after treatment -- but they have a terrific surprise in store for him that shows they're no dummies. Fun stuff and you cannot beat the illustrations.

These books are excellent for teaching young readers about the elements of story writing. It clearly portrays the issue, solutions, and moral take away. Would definitely recommend! Hope this helps.

I loved reading this to my daughter regularly in the mid eighties. She loved it as well. The lesson is compassion and kindness combined with developing a plan to protect yourself - not being foolhardy considering circumstances - without sounding preachy. I gave it to my dentist years ago when he had young daughters. I have to say I preferred the original illustration on the cover, although this is adorable too.

My children and grandchildren have all loved this book, especially when the fox tries to say "Thank you!" I purchased this book for my dentist. He had asked me some questions after pulling a tooth and putting gauze in my mouth. I told him that I felt like the fox in Dr DeSoto when I tried to talk. He didn't know what I was talking about so I bought him this book. He enjoyed the book and has not asked me anymore questions when he had his tools in my mouth!!

Dr. DeSoto, a mouse, has a standing policy of never treating predators at his dental practice. One day, a fox appears and pleads for help, weeping so that Dr. and Mrs. DeSoto take pity on him and agree to replace his abscessed tooth. While helping him they realize he intends to eat them after his treatment is finished, and they devise a clever way to outwit him while still finishing the job.The story is satisfying on many levels. It builds on the principle of Aesop's fable of the crane and the wolf, showing that evil people will return evil for good. But the dentist and his wife demonstrate wisdom in doing good for this evil character, refusing to go back on their commitment yet not denying their real danger. In working together, this husband and wife team demonstrate courage, unity, and mutual care, exemplifying the kind of marriage I want to be defined as normal for my children.Steig tells the story in an understated way, with effective dialogue and gentle humor. Children will wait anxiously to find out how the two mice will resolve their problem, and will greatly enjoy the fox's discomfiture when he is defeated. This is an excellent early-reader story about how to deal with evil in the everyday world.

This is the story of Doctor De Soto, a mouse who is a dentist to other animals. All other animals except "dangerous" animals, that is -- dangerous to mice. Dr De Soto and his assistant, Mrs. De Soto, will not (Repeat: Not!) treat cats, no matter what dental pain a cat may be in.But then one day a fox (Dangerous Animal!) stands out on the street beneath the dentist's office and wails in pain from a sore tooth. Even though they know they shouldn't do so, the De Soto's allow the fox into their office and Dr. De Soto extracts the sore tooth. The fox immediately thinks of eating the two mice. But Dr. De Soto has built a new gold tooth for the fox, and the tooth can't be installed until the next day, so the fox puts off eating the mice until tomorrow.Dr. De Soto and his wife are up all night, knowing that when the dentist inserts the gold tooth, the fox will eat them. But then Dr. De Soto gets a brilliant idea. The next day, before he installs the fox's tooth, he asks the fox if he would like to be the very first recipient of a new preparation which will prevent cavities or any kind of tooth pain ever again. The fox readily agrees and Dr. De Soto applies the formula to each tooth. Then he tells the fox to close his jaws tight and keep them closed for a full minute. The result is delicious -- for the reader and the De Soto's, but not for the fox.

I loved reading this book to my kids (all now grown) back in the day. When my dentist let me know she was expecting I bought this for her so she could read it to her child.Great book, nice story, very good art -- as expected from a Caldecott Award winner.

Purchased for my 4 year old grandson, whose mom is a dentist. They already had a paperback copy, but love having a hard cover. The story itself is so fun. He loves the book.

Since this classic book was written I have lent many copies to friends who need to develop their own rituals when undergoing surgery or serious illness. As a former visiting nurse, I appreciate the author's grounding in the science of medicine and their spiritual grounding in holistic traditions individuals can adapt to suit their needs. Ten years ago when I had 16 months of chemo for stage 3-C ovarian cancer, the appendix on the immune system inspired me to create my own imaging rituals inviting my body to cooperate with chemo. I'm still here, grateful, happy to share this book, and keep two copies on hand. It is well organized into body systems, clearly written, a treasure health of and wellness practices for individuals and communities.

Outdated and repetivate information

Really enjoy this book. Good descriptions and break down

Nothing new here, just the same things we already know and not even said any differently to make it more exciting.

This book is very effective in learning how to use rituals for healing and how many different types of rituals there are.

IMO, Total BS.

Have been waiting forever for this item. This is one of my professors. I should have bought a copy from her; I would get it quicker

My 10 year old grandson has leukemia and is currently hospitalized for it. I used this book to help him visualize his immune system and create a healing experience. I haven't found much out there that is actually written for kids (this book is also a guide for adults), but it's easy to adapt what there is in this book to fit your child's situation with a just a little effort and imagination. I found the examples very encouraging and helpful as well. Following the examples of paintings and drawings found in the book...I think this helped him feel more in control over the disease.
