Thai Fried Rice  Fresh 1 yellow onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 red chiles, seeded and finely chopped 2 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, sliced into ¼ inch slices ½ lb raw shrimp, peeled, cleaned, and halved lengthwise 2 eggs, beaten 5 cups cold cooked jasmine rice juice of 2 limes 3 cilantro sprigs, leaves picked and roughly chopped 2 spring onions, finely chopped   Spices freshly ground black pepper   Pantry 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3 tablespoons fish sauce  serves 4–6 • • • • • • • • • • Preparation 10 minutes Cooking 10 minutes  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok over medium heat and fry the onion until softened, 1–2 minutes. Add the garlic and chiles and fry for another minute until fragrant and aromatic.2. Add the sliced chicken and stir-fry briskly until the chicken starts to change color, then add the shrimp. Stir-fry briskly for 2 minutes, then add the eggs, cooking them on the upper edges of the pan so that you get a thin omelet.3. Splash in the fish sauce, then add the rice and continue to stir-fry for 3 minutes. Season with black pepper and lime juice.4. Add the cilantro and spring onions, then quickly transfer to a large serving dish.

Beautiful cookbook! Interesting recipes that I want to eat! Most importantly, there’s a beautiful photo of each recipe, so I know what the dish should look like. This is so important, especially when it comes to ethnic dishes that are new to someone. This cookbook has the most recipes that appeal to me among the 6 Thai cookbooks I looked at. The only very small complaint is that I wish every dish also had it’s Thai name includes for reference.

It's kind of hard to come by these ingredients, for ie; Cilantro ROOTS. So I had to grow Cilantro myself and then use the roots. No other stores or grocery stores sell Cilantro with the roots. Other than that, with the right ingredients - holy moly this book is awesome. Super easy too.

“What a gorgeous cookbook!” That was my first thought upon seeing this cookbook. I love the cover, and the photos inside the book are gorgeous! There is a lovely variety of recipes in this cookbook separated into chapters that make it easy to find what you’re looking for. Chapters are:Ingredients for Thai CookingMust-have Herbs & SpicesSnacks & Finger FoodsSaladsRoast, Grill & Stir-fryFish & SeafoodCurries & SoupsRice, Noodles & SidesDesserts & DrinksBasicsMenu PlannerThe menu planner is especially nice as, rather than a dry list of recipes, each menu is a row of photos of each dish on the menu.I wanted to start simple, so I decided on the Chicken Satay with Turmeric & Ginger. I was unable to find the tamarind paste, but I decided to go ahead without it. I have a serious skin sensitivity to peppers, so I double gloved and prayed. Hmmm. Not sure what happened with the peppers as I bought what I was supposed to, but there was basically no heat at all. I didn’t want to blow the back of our heads off, but I did want SOME heat. As a result of non-spicy peppers and no tamarind paste, the results were a little bland, but good. While the flavors were subtle, if you paid attention, they were nice. Let me be clear–this is NOT the recipe’s fault! I don’t know if someone mis-labled the peppers or what, but they clearly didn’t work like they should, and I’ve seen tamarind paste in the store before, but they were out and I didn’t want to wait. With the tamarind and peppers that are actually hot I think it would have been a great dish. I actually made jasmine rice substituting coconut milk for part of the water, and it was very good.Another simple, but excellent dish is the Thai Fried Rice. It calls for chicken and shrimp, but I think you can easily use one or the other by itself and still have a great dish. It’s easy to make and very delicious.There’s so much more to try in this book, but I didn’t want you to have to wait longer for a review. Take a leap into some homemade Thai food. I freaking love quirky Walt or “Swing”...he’s a focused, lovable dweeb who’s also a dedicated friend and you want to slap him silly and hug him at the same time.Noah is also lovable and his plight of unrequited love hits close to home with almost any YA reader.I’m still so torn, though. I’m confused by the abrupt ending. I get that life often deals us blows that destroy us out of nowhere, but I also don’t get it.Hmmmmm

Noah, Walt and Sam (Samantha) have been best friends since elementary school, but ever since they got to high school, Noah hasn't been able to figure out how to tell Sam that he really likes her. No matter how much Walt (aka Swing) encourages him to take a chance, Noah struggles to express his feelings for Sam. Inspired by love letters he finds in a thrift store, Noah finally starts to put his feelings onto paper using both art and poetry. While I related to Noah, I was utterly charmed by Swing's humor and optimism. Readers will want to talk when they reach the end--be there for them, as they find their voice about the larger issues impacting our society.

Although it was going to be the Beatles filmed while recording an album, ending with the finale of a wonderful, life affirming concert (Director Michael Lindsay Hogg envisioned an amphitheatre in Tunisia, possibly with a dawn start, until realising the band would still be in bed at that time and Ringo, having disliked Indian food was not keen to try Tunisian cuisine…), the result was a band disintegrating in front of the cameras, with their final concert seeing them going no further than the roof of their Savile Row Apple offices…That said, the Rooftop Concert, as it came to be, misleadingly, known (the author of this book suggests it was more a live recording session, with more than one version of some songs) is joyous and you can hear, and see, that the band are enjoying themselves. Plus, the earlier recording sessions did result in more bootlegged material than anything else in the Beatles career, so it did leave fans with some worthwhile material, to be endlessly mined and pored over.In this book, we are taken from the end of 1968, through to the rooftop performance on January 30th, 1969. There is some good detail on the formation of Apple and the purchase of the building in Savile Row, along with a brief history of the building and the area, for those who are not familiar with it. As Apple Corps went into freefall, and the band fragmented, they were obliged to try to make business ventures work. However, as the band fell apart, both Lennon and McCartney were heavily involved in their most intense romantic relationships, with Yoko Ono and Linda Eastman. Linda, who would marry Paul in March of that year, was pregnant with their first child (Paul would adopt her young daughter, Heather), while John and Yoko would also tie the knot within a couple of months of the Beatles last live appearance. Yoko’s appearances at the recording studio caused continuing tension within the band, as did Lennon’s increased use of heroin; making him often distant, uncommunicative and disinterested.From the start of filming at Twickenham studios, on January 2nd, 1969, it was clear that both the studio (cold and vast), and the stress of being constantly filmed, were not conducive to making music. The author suggests that going early in the morning may have reminded the Beatles of their early years when they commuted to work. Actually, the only Beatle who ever held a proper job for a long period, was Ringo, who did three years of an apprenticeship. George and Paul held short term jobs, but John only managed a few weeks as a labourer before being sacked, so I am not convinced that commuting was something they were too familiar with. Certainly, early mornings were not something they were that keen on either, but they all seemed initially interested in the idea of developing new material and, indeed, on the concept of a concert.It is interesting to hear from many of the people who worked on the filming, or at Apple, or who were involved in events at some point in the story (including some of the police who traipsed along to Apple after complaints about the noise, and those who were lucky enough to be around and witness the impromptu concert). However, at the start in Twickenham, with no Brian, or George Martin, to set them down to work, the Beatles retreated into oldies; procrastinating, jamming and bickering. When George walked out, John unkindly suggested replacing him with Eric Clapton (apparently, when told this later, Clapton retorted that the Beatles were far too unpleasant to each other for his liking).Things improved with a move to the basement at Apple and the intelligent suggestion, by a returned George, that Billy Preston (who they had first met in Hamburg and who was in London playing with Ray Charles) be invited along. As Lennon later admitted, a ‘guest,’ meant that everyone was on their best behaviour and things in the studio improved. Despairing of his amphitheatre venue, you sense that Michael Lindsay-Hogg was just grateful that the Beatles agreed to climb up to the roof and perform. Even at the last minute, even this was in doubt, until John took the lead and led the band out onto the chilly rooftop. The performance ended with John’s line, “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition.” Ironic, indeed, especially had he known the building had been previously owned by one of the directors of Decca – who had rejected the band back in 1962.This book is full of such nuggets. The author weaves in all the current news stories, events going on at the same time, funny comments, reminiscences and memories. The Beatles never performed together again, despite endless offers. Perhaps it is just as well but, either way, it was a great performance and they certainly did pass the audition!

This is a marvelous little book about one of the great highlights of the Beatles late career . The book is very well researched and very well written . The reader is given all the lead up and background , all the disintegration and bickering as the group fell apart but also the pride they had in being the Beatles . This rooftop concert and the album Abbey Road are the group’s last two triumphs .

I've probably read a hundred Beatle books and fewer than 10% have really stood out. This will join the list of favorites, in part because it's so tightly focused. While some might see the what-else-was-going-on-in-the-world stuff as extraneous, I'd heartily disagree. Barrell does a wonderful job of establishing context both in the big world and within the extraordinary quartet playing their very last gig together. Fifty years on, the building – now an Abercrombie for Kids store – is still recognizably where it all happened, and Barrell's writing makes it easy to imagine having been on Savile Row at lunchtime on January 30, 1969. (One small quibble: it's clear that a lot of research and fact-checking went into this book, but early on there's a reference to Senator Robert Kennedy being assassinated on June 10, 1968. The tragedy took place four days earlier than that.)

This is a good book filled lots of little details about the Get Back sessions and the events leading up to the rooftop "concert." I've read a ton of Beatle book and there was some info in here I had never read before. Seems well researched, including info gathered from first-hand accounts by people who were there at Twickenham Studios, the Apple building and studio, on the rooftop during the event, and on the street below. The only fault I had with the book was the numerous times Mr. Barrell would wander off course offering details of events that had no relevance whatsoever to the Beatles or the rooftop concert. I assume he was trying to put the events into "historical context" but to me the technique didn't work well. Perhaps citing some of those events in the prologue or first chapter might work fine, but to keep inserting them awkwardly into the middle of the Beatles story came across more as a distraction than a historical framework. I would still recommend the book however. There are enough tidbits and little-known story details here to forgive a few distractions.

I did like all the minutiae the author included as to what was going on in London around the time of the show.

I am a fan of Dr. Gray, his podcast gives great advice and cuts through the BS to make sure you totally understand how the interview process works. He explains things that would keep you up at night such as, "why didn't I get an interview?"The 3 mock interviews he gives aways as audio recording is worth way more than the price of the book alone. I think if you really want to demistify the process of the Medical School interview, this is the book to check out. 2 Thumbs up.

This book has a large variety of questions that truly make you think about what your responses would be on interview day. By reading this book you are challenging yourself to dig a little deeper in to your motivation and reasoning behind becoming a doctor so that you can not only know what to say during the interview, but get to know yourself a little better. I am years away from applying to medical school, but by Reading this book I feel I am a little more prepared than others.

First off I loved the book. My one critique for whatever it's worth is that while the initial chapters offer great advice, at times the background information seemed a bit unnecessary for someone who has reached the point in the process where they are preparing for interviews. By far the most valuable sections to me were the question lists and coaching session reviews of students working on their answers. The book is well worth it just for those sections alone, and I would have liked to see even more of that kind of stuff. The book was a large element of my interview prep for my one and only interview this cycle. It helped me to feel confident in my preparation for interview day, and I think contributed to the fact I will be starting an M.D. program this July! Best of luck to all still in the hunt. You got this, and Dr. Gray's book will definitely help!

Any premed who seriously wants to get into medical school needs to read this book. It took me about three hours to read it from cover to cover, and it’s less than $20, so if you are skeptical then take the risk, you have little to lose and so, so much to gain. Dr. Gray goes through a brief background behind the interview, how to prepare beforehand, how to best present yourself during the interview, and what to do afterward. Every detail of the process is covered in a way that helps you prepare to be uniquely you in your interview and not some robot that’s following a popular script from a google search. He talks about an interview like a first date and that’s how you want to approach it – key highlight stories from your life to keep it interesting, but not scripted or regurgitated facts about yourself. My favorite part of the book is Section III, The Examples. Dr. Gray dedicates about a third of the book to transcripts from real mock interviews he's done where he asks applicants the most common interview questions, gives them feedback to their answers, and then repeats the process again. It's great to see how a very raw answer becomes more polished without losing the essence of the applicant's thoughts. I haven't seen another resource that offers such in-depth and real examples of how to respond to questions like "why do you want to be a doctor?" or "tell me about yourself" or "what's your biggest weakness?" among several others. He also includes a chapter for MMI interviews with a bunch of practice scenarios.On the first day of acceptances this year, I got accepted to an MD/MBA program at my top choice school and this book deserves a lot of credit for my acceptance. I spent most of my three interviews talking about stuff that was non-medicine related that the interviewer and I had in common. Without reading this book I wouldn’t have been able to set myself up for such relaxed, natural interviews and would have panicked if I was asked questions that were unrelated to medical school or my application. This book was the key to my success in those interviews.Again, if you’re serious about nailing your interviews and getting into medical school, buy this book. Also check out Dr. Gray’s other resources, including his other books, The Premed Years podcast, and medicalschoolhq.net. You’ll thank yourself when that acceptance letter comes.

I have been listening to Dr. Ryan's podcasts for a long time. He has the absolute best information in the entire premed world. His advice on the podcasts was one of the only reasons I was able to realize that becoming a physician as an older married man with children was possible. I am going to apply to medical schools in 2017 and purchased this book immediately to start preparing. The content is FANTASTIC!

GET THIS BOOK! Seriously, get especially it! It's great for interviews and prepping for it. Read it beforehand interviews and I would say at least a month before your first interview, you should be done with the book. That way, you could compose your answers based on questions from this book. Don't be too rehearsed but have an idea of how to answer normal interview questions. The best part of this book was the feedback Ryan gave during the mock interviews. It's what i used to prep for my interviews and it really made me see weak points when I tried presenting myself in regards to medicine to friends. Other highlights were the healthcare questions and ethical questions. It's great to see the wide gamut of question Dr. Gray puts into the book and you'll surely benefit. Again, an amazing book! :)

Dr. Gray works incredibly hard to fill an information void for those on the premed path in various different formats. I found his podcasts when searching for MCAT prep tips. I rated this only as 4 stars simply due to the heavy overlap with the information from his podcasts regarding the interview. I think the information is all great; it just won't all be new to you if you are a regular listener. Regardless, I am still quite happy with the book because of the examples given and the feedback provided to each student about their answers. Additionally, there were several times that I came across interview questions that I had never considered before. I am confident that this book, along with the podcasts, have helped me tremendously along my premed journey. Buy this book; you won't be sorry.

A little disappointed. The cards are just pieces of paper. Not thick and not laminated.Having said that there are many good phrases to learn with Spanish on one side andEnglish on the other. So they were exactly what I was looking for, just disappointed inthe quality.

I majored in Spanish in college and haven't had immense opportunities to practice. I bought these because I wanted to brush up on vocabulary that might have fallen by the wayside.There are quite a few of these cards in the box and they are categorized. There are phrases that are supposed to help with travel (e.g. "I would like a double room." and Does the room have cable television?") restaurants (e.g. "I would like a glass of water")banking, time, shopping, etc.I think the cards are pretty good for a person who is just starting out because they help a person learn basic vocabulary. That being said, the cards are really too basic for someone who has had any background in Spanish They are meant for someone who has probably learned the sounds of the letters and needs to quickly memorize a lot of vocab for tests or travel. Really, these would be perfect for a high school Spanish I class or the first half of a college Spanish I class.The card stock is decent and you can take them with you places without worrying about bending them too badly. It's important to note, however, that you get the phrase and the English translation and that is it. There is no break down of the word to see how it is pronounced. Word pronunciation can be useful for beginners.There were a couple of translations that were not exact. Sometimes the publisher employs a more complicated Spanish translation than is needed. Be prepared that you may experience verb tenses that are foreign to you if you have only studied the present tense. This set employs phrases that may use future, conditional and subjunctive tenses. It may be helpful to have a copy of 501 Spanish verbs next to you as you work through this set so you can see how the verb used in a particular phrase would be conjugated in the tense you have studied/are familiar with.Again, very basic vocab and phrases with these cards. These phrases are important but they are not intended to facilitate long conversations with the locals in a Spanish-speaking county.

The Spanish vocabulary its just the right tools to learn Spanish, its easy to understand and to follow. My 2 young children (11 and 13) pick up Basic Spanish in 4 weeks thanks to the Spanish Phrases. I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn Spanish.

This box of 1000 cards is arranged by topic with colored tabs at the top and they are numbered. Some of the translations are not what I remember from my studies but Spanish varies just like English. I am still going thru the cards but value this review and would recommend them to anyone with a basic background in conversational Spanish. The is no explanation...just a translation.

I bought these for my kids who started Spanish this year. Perfect addition to help them study.

These cards are great for studying. It isn't too overwhelming since it's not a list that goes on and on. You can choose a category, for ex: greetings or weather, about 1/4" of them. I put them in my pocket on a walk and review them by flipping between English and Spanish to test myself and flip to make sure I'm correct (or not!).

The cards themselves are very basic and flimsy paper like a cheap business card. The real problem for me is that on one side of the card you have the word right side up, then you flip the card over to see the translation its upside down. To me this is very distracting when you're trying to learn the language and you have to flip the card over and then turn it right side up to read it properly. I don't recommend this product..

Crystal M. Fleming, PhD, is a writer and sociologist who researches racism in the United States and abroad. She earned degrees from Wellesley College and Harvard University and is associate professor of sociology and Africana studies at Stony Brook University. Fleming writes about race, sexuality, and politics for publications including The Root, Black Agenda Report, Vox, and Everyday Feminism, and she has tens of thousands of followers on social media. From the very beginning, this book will draw you in and have you keep turning the pages. Dr. Fleming is able to use her expertise as a race scholar to bring to a larger audience (outside of her classroom and academia) concepts and heavily researched facts about racism that are never taught unless you've taken a course on race. Also, this book is definitely not "dry", it's very lively which has much to do with the unique voice of Dr. Fleming who is able to weave in humor. I would highly recommend this book!

The 3 stars is not a rating of the content of the book, but rather that the Kindle edition is missing pages. I'm only up to page 10 and I've come across 3 blank pages. Sheesh.

Great book. Perfect combination of historical context, personal experience, and humor.

Fleming’s does an amazing job at giving up a well rounded comprehensive study of race. She tackles it from all perspective. We see how institutional racism functions as well as racism to oppressed people of color. Best of all she addresses the fallacy’s of race and debunks then beautifully. She’s blunt, to the point, and passionate about making the general public literate on Race.

A great start to understanding race. The conversation should be had by all. The terms given in this book will inevitably force you to think critically and you personal and social experiences. If you want to be a better humanitarian, read this. If you want to learn, read this. If you want to challenge, read this.

I honestly didn't know what to expect from a book with a bright cover coupled with a slightly inflammatory title, but I knew it was going to be interesting. I didn't expect to get fully sucked into Dr. Fleming's accessible yet well-written language and simply-illustrated examples let alone learn so much I didn't know. The hard part is holding this book on the subway and feeling the stares, from whites, blacks, asians, anyone. A woman came up to my on the train and asked to take a photo of the book, and I truly hope she ran right out and checked it out of the library or ordered it on Amazon.I feel like this is my door to critical race theory, which, as a Hispanic woman living in New York, I know embarrassingly literal about. I was raised similarly to Dr. Fleming, surrounded by wealthy white children at my Catholic school that featured a whopping 2 black kids and 2 Hispanic/Latina kids. My mother didn't want me to speak Spanish, or have any accent, or do anything that would other me to the white kids; she wanted me to be "successful." I realize now that she left me ill-equipped as an adult to wrangle the feelings of not belonging, of navigating a world that was designed to keep me (a woman, Hispanic) at a lower level. This book is a great start, that left me looking at my own ignorance in thoughts, attitudes, and stereotypes as well as a little therapeutic guilt.I'm going to be reading a lot of the people mentioned in the book to begin my slightly late education on systemic racial inequality and I truly hope a LOT of other people use this book to do so, as well. Especially white people. I saw a couple of white girls laughing at the book title on the train as I read, and I wanted to hand it to them straight up and say, you CLEARLY need to check yourselves and read this.Be open. Know that you're not perfect and you don't (and will never) know everything or experience a fraction of the life experiences that other do. Listen to them. Listen to them. LISTEN TO THEM! Learn something and be a better person.

The biggest problem with Fleming’s book is that she screams too much.Indeed, all the way through.How can you disagree with her base point: that we live in a systemically racist society, one in which people of color are routinely denigrated and put at disadvantage? The base problem isn’t overtly racist behavior. It’s a system of beliefs, attitudes and laws that put blacks and other people of color at economic, judicial and social disadvantage: the chance of their catching up with whites is slim to none unless we dismantle the system as it is. (Which won’t happen.)Add to that being a woman. And then a gay woman. And then lesbian and you have ample reason to feel angry. How could you not? Our system puts ALL African-Americans behind the eight ball and does infinitely worse to people who lie in the intersections of our prejudices – think “intersectionality” theory a la black/feminist/gay/trans sociology—at once black, woman and lesbian or bisexual or trans.That’s the good part of this book. We need a wakeup call and genteel doesn’t cut it. But now to the bad parts.In her anger or indignation, Fleming doesn’t discriminate. She’s not into nuances or understanding of why people compromise, bend their message. Thus Obama is just as bad as Trump, and so is Hillary. Trump’s awful but Obama and Hillary bend too much, are too much in hostage to the capitalist, neoliberal mindset that enslaves or demeans our non-white citizens. The problem is that when you paint everything you oppose as equally bad, it’s not clear where the gray paths lie that lead out of it. By the excess of her indignation, ‘Johnny One Note’ Fleming undermines her own message. Which is a good one.
