I did buy this for a class, and doing the required work was rather time consuming, however, it was also very rewarding and useful. Never again will you wonder when a medical professional throws out some term. Despite knowledge of Latin and/or Greek, this book just drills you on breaking words down when applied to English, as well as some light discussion of semantic shift over time and some other basic linguistic principles, which are sufficient for the layman or classics student, while short enough to not be tedious to someone in linguistics. The examples used are a bit antiquated in the chapter introductions, but as the rest of the lessons deal with antiquated suffixes, prefixes and roots/bases of words, it is rather timeless. I still frequently carry it with me to brush up on what I learned.

First, do note that it is most definitely a textbook. If you just want a book to help you understand the English language, I would read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue.I had to read this for a course on Latin and Greek roots, and found this book very easy to follow despite not being very familiar with the subject matter. I did feel a few things could have used better explaining (it doesn't explain "doublets" well at all, and there were parts that were quite repetitive), and I think the usefulness of this book really comes down to how the instructor uses it, as well as the workbook. But overall, it was an engaging read, one that gave me a new area of interest beyond my credit requirement.

Twenty plus years ago I took a college class, Greek and Latin Elements in English. I loved the class, kept my class notes and notebook, but the book vanished when I went overseas. I was sad for a long time until I found it on Amazon Prime. I love it! As far as I can tell, it's accurate. I'm not a scholar, but I love knowing more about our language and passing on tidbits to help my children with vocabulary.

I originally checked this book out from my library to use as a textbook for my undergraduate etymology class, but I loved it so much that I had to have my own copy! Each chapter gives you a set of base/root words from Latin and Greek so you can learn them in chunks. However, I will admit that the chapter and index organization is not the clearest for the reader, but it's not half bad once you get used to it.

Not what I thought it was, this book is about English words that have changed or came from other origins... not a strictly translation book... more of a work book in a sence. I was looking for a quick reference book for my nursing classes. This could help but not in the way or time saving way I was looking for.

This was my textbook for my undergrad etymology class, which was probably one of my favorite college classes. I had sold this textbook back after the class ended, but I couldn't stand to part with it! This book divides up Greek and Latin roots into chapters so you can learn a little bit at a time and is fairly comprehensive. This is likely a great gift for the odd word nerd like me. :)

I'm only one chapter in and I already love the book. I know it's meant to teach vocabulary, but I love the history I learned at the start of the book a lot. It is already worth the purchase

Meh. Not a good read. I mean, its an old old text book. Refers to the USSR etc.Just really boring writing.

This is the best book I know on the sociology of health and illness. I say this based on 30 years of teaching the sociology of medicine and my more or less constant scanning of the literature. This is the book I am using to teach the sociology of medicine.Barr's book is easy to read and seems to be written primarily for physicians. Barr, however, is a sociologist who gives a full and theoretically accurate account of sociological theories of race, social causes of ill health, and physician behavior. In contrast to other accounts by sociologists, Barr as a physician gives excellent examples and references from the medical literature when he wants to give support from the physiological literature on his sociological claims. Barr's presentation about race disparities in medical treatment is both devastating and very careful. While he does not want to claim that physicians engage in racist practices when they care for patients and he is careful to show that there could be a number of causes for the outcomes he reports, it also is clear that blacks have worse outcomes from medical care than do whites.

I had to read this book as part of a class called the Sociology of Health of Ethnic Minorities. It is a very good and eye-opening book! I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in going into medicine or epidemiology. I wish it would be more of a required text for medical school students because I think knowing the facts that this book explores would greatly benefit our healthcare system in general.

When I heard Annabeth Albert’s new series is a spinoff from her #gaymers series AND it is military-themed, I fully admit that the fanboy in me let out a happy squee. After reading the first book, Off Base, though, I didn’t have quite as good an impression as I did of the other books of hers I’ve read, because it took me a bit to get into the story and characters. Once I got there, though, it was an enjoyable read that finished strongly.After new Navy SEAL Zack Nelson has some problems with other members of his team in San Diego, he takes advantage of an offer to move into a rental unit off base. Isolation is just the thing he wants, and the price is right too, since he’s helping with some remodeling projects on the place. Or he’s trying to, anyway. Pike Reynolds thought he was on the fast track after completing his dissertation, but he wasn’t able to land his dream job. So when an opportunity to teach in San Diego comes up, he feels like he needs to take it. And that puts him back into contact with Zack, a “straight” guy he knows he has chemistry with, but he also knows he has no interest in being a guinea pig for curiosity again, even though Zack hits all his buttons. When they move in together, Zack’s resistance crumbles and he lets himself be the thing he’s always tried to hide, both from the outside world and himself. There’s no way he can ever step out of the shell he’s confined himself to, but he’ll need to if he’s going to keep Pike.Zack is your classic closet case, and he has a lot of good reasons for it. He grew up in a strict religious family that constantly railed against homosexuality, and even though he knows gays are allowed in the military (and he personally knows a fellow SEAL who is gay), hostility from his teammates makes that impossible. It’s just safer all around if he denies his thoughts and urges, even to himself. And to do that, he really closes himself off to people as a whole. He knows Pike through the gay SEAL (and we met both Zack and Pike in book three of the #gaymers series, Connection Error, because of this fact), and Pike seems to be able to see through all his barriers. But even after Zack starts letting his guard down within the bubble that is their rental house, Pike is torn between being the out-and-proud gay man he’s always been and keeping things comfortable for Zack. It’s a conflict in Pike that Zack is fully aware of, but it’s not easy for someone like Zack to take such a big risk.The story line is fine in Off Base, but I had a lot of difficulty getting into it because things are very choppy in the first quarter of the book. I can’t put my finger on exactly what caused it, but it was a struggle. Once they moved in together, things picked up and this wasn’t a problem for me anymore. It’s not just that the sex was hot either (and it was.) These two worked together as a couple, and the struggles they went through felt very real. And outside the relationship, their problems had much in common with one another, even though neither could really help the other with them. Put all of this together and I felt sympathetic to their plights, and when things got rough for them, I understood why, even though I didn’t like it. But that often makes these final dramatic sequences much better in the long run.As a whole, Annabeth Albert’s Off Base is a decent read once you get past the first chunk of the book. That surprised me in retrospect, because I’ve not had that issue with any of the other books of hers that I’ve read. That being said, I do recommend this title, and I really look forward to the next one, because I think there’s a hot military widower that’s going to be the main character. There’s no way I could pass that up.

Wow! I think Off Base is probably my favorite book by Annabeth Albert; this one really blew me out of the water and I loved it so much! I don’t even know where to start with all the things I liked. Albert’s books are always very heavily character driven so I loved Zack and Pike! I thought it was really unique that we had a Navy SEAL who was new to the teams and still going through training. That was different than most Navy SEAL books with the super alpha male who’s been doing it for a long time and is jaded and tough. I liked that this one was different with Zack still trying to fit in with his team and figure things out; his vulnerability really made you empathize with his character.I am completely in love with both of these characters! I loved how they were individually and I especially loved how they were together. Initially, I thought that Pike was going to come across as a little immature but he was in fact the complete opposite and I thought he was a perfect match to help Zack figure out who he really was. Pike was fun and silly, so he could keep things lighthearted but he also knew when to be serious. I really liked that even though Pike had been down this route before and worried that Zack would end up like his ex, he was still incredibly patient with Zack and genuinely cared for him.I was also a bit worried I wouldn’t like Zack as much for so strongly denying who he was but Albert does such an amazing job of making you feel and understand what Zack is going through. You can’t help but just want to give him a hug and do anything you can to make his life easier. I especially like that when things got intimate, it was Zack who made the first move. He was so self-conscious about his feelings that I don’t think it would have worked very well if Pike had been the one to make a move first but instead it was Zack taking control of his life. And even though it took Zack a long time to be comfortable with his sexuality in public, I loved that he fully embraced what they had when they were together in the privacy of their house.I was also excited to see Ryan and Josiah from Connection Error made a lot of appearances in this book. Ryan is one of my favorite characters from the #gaymers series so it was nice to see more of him and he was a really great friend for Zack to have. I can’t wait for the next book!

“Off Base” was my first book by Annabeth Albert and I’m mixed when it comes to my review. I like how she writes but I’m not a fan of how much of a doormat Pike was when it came to Zack and their relationship. I wanted to like them together but throughout the story I keep feeling Pike deserved better. I really disliked how Pike kept taking everything Zack threw at him and didn’t like how Zack didn’t fight for anything. I may be in the minority though so if you like closeted stories this may be for you. Overall I loved Pike and their friends Ryan and Josiah but Zack didn’t ever really make the story for me.

I always love Annabeth Albert's characters.I started reading this book as soon as it hit my inbox (I'd pre-ordered) and, although I am making my way through seven other books, I couldn't put this one down. I have, in fact, just now looked up the author on amazon and pre-ordered At Attention, the next in this series that feeds right off the Gaymers series. The author writes strongly character-driven stories. That's the key to my heart.I should've known. ;)As with her other series, there isn't a lot of technical detail regarding their jobs. I only find that good if it's relevant, so I note it for those who want the SEAL or professor aspects to show a deeper knowledge on the author's part. I noticed it, so it wasn't quite as much as I like even though I'm neither a SEAL nor a professor. However, since I'm working on writing a book, I well aware how much research it can take to just drop in a sentence here and there in a profession you don't know and NOT get it wrong. So, I support glossing over rather than hours of research that might still risk the ire of, say, a Navy SEAL reader if I got it wrong. :)

Bought this for our 3rd grader and could hardly get through it. Perhaps it will be something to come back to later. I can't say anything is wrong with the book but the format is not user friendly and we are a household full of readers. Wouldn't recommend this one.

Beautiful book. I wouldn't recommend for a read-aloud. Its a little to long, but nonetheless; a great book for enrichment.

I have used this book to teach intermediate grades about the Aztecs and it has been a surprising favorite of my students for years. The rich illustrations add to the story and enhance the historical elements of the book. This one is not to be missed!

I ordered a series of books on central and south American cultures for my 7th graders to use as quick references on a Latin American Cultures Historical Fiction project. What a fantastic and retelling! The illustrations are intricate and the students listened attentively as I read this aloud in class. Excellent book!

This book borders on Snoozeville. It's positively almost really boring, but on the plus side it very informational without a lot of boring facts, and I learned something from reading it. The book isn't great, and isn't bad. I guess I would describe it as an illustrated historical account. If you're trying to teach some aspect of history then buy it, but if you thought it might be fun to read then l wouldn't recommend it.

Review from a 10 year old Student: The sad night is a picture book about how the Spanish invaded the Aztec empire. It starts out with the Aztecs looking for a place with an eagle on a cactus with a rattlesnake in its beak to build an empire then it skips ahead to Hernan Cortés's arrival in Mexico. It talks about most of the details from how the Aztecs thought that he was a god to when he came back and conquered them. It also has pictures similar to what the Aztecs would have put in their books or codices. If you are a kid who is interested in the Aztecs or the Spanish then this is definitely a book you want to read.

The charecters of this book are Hernando Cortez, a spanish soldier, and Moctezuma the Second, the king of the Aztecs.This all takes place in Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital city and home of the Aztecs.Cortez and his men want Moctezuma to protect them from any possible danger, but Moctezuma says that his kingdom is peaceful enugh and they do not need protection. So, Cortez and his army kidnap Moctezuma and then, when the Aztecs find out, the battle begins.It is great when Cortez loses his men during the battle at the end because of the way the author tells the story.This book is good for children who are interested in history about famous explorers.Cady

Nice book with excellent pictorials. Love the structure of it and the well done work resulting in a beautiful layout worth reading to the children about our ancestors.

these sixteen old time cats and kittens stickers are wonderful. the glitter on them is a dimensional, granular clear or crystal colored glitter, and there is protective vellum between the sheets to ensure ultimate glitteriness.the cats are engaged in various activities; from wearing sleeping caps to bonnets to bow ties to chasing things in the fur, these cats are having a great time.please see the images i attached to the product page to see the style and detail of the individual stickers.

For reference I purchased these in April of 2015, and it's been over 2 years since I first stuck them on to my computer. These have gone through a ton of wear and tear but still manage to keep my personality in check. Especially the ones I don't touch as often when I open/close my computer. You can tell the ones I touch the most are worn off. The glitter is gone, but the cats are still there in my soul (worn down or not. I still get compliments on my stickers today! I seriously highly recommend these. Haven't slid, fallen, or peeled off after all this time. I think it's about time I bought another!

I always have a few students that are just crazy about cats. These stickers not only have cats but they also have glitter. I predict they will go fast! You don't get many stickers in this tiny booklet, but they are nice. ETA I was right. Cats and glitter was an irresistible combo. They were all gone in just a few days. I should have bought two or three sets!

The pics come nowhere even close to doing these stickers any justice... after I got them the first time and actually saw them, I turned right around and ordered about 10 more, LOL. To be honest, I'll most likely get several more before too long, while I still can.

I purchased this for a friend who is really into super-cheesy cat drawings and all things glittery. This book of stickers was the perfect combination for a little birthday gift! I was expecting a larger book to be honest, but it was so well-received I really can't complain. There were only a few pages of stickers, but the drawings were actually really nice (and for the price, maybe I shouldn't be surprised honestly!) Shipping was SUPER quick too!

Bought this for my boss on her birthday, shes a self confessed "crazy cat lady" these stickers are beautiful, very vintage looking, and very cute would buy again.

These are cute little stickers for adding to letters and envelopes. Gilttery! You don't get a whole lot, but then you don't pay a whole lot, so it sort of works out.
