Chris Jackson is an author, designer, and professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He lectures and conducts workshops relating to interaction design and motion graphics, and his professional work has received over 25 distinguished national and international awards for online communication. Excellent introductory book to After Effects. Contains plenty of step-by-step tutorials that cover the basics of motion and animation. I plan to use this book and its exercises in teaching motion design at the college level. It provides a solid foundation to understanding both motion design and the After Effects interface.
Arrived in a timely manner and no flaws. Using for my Motion Design class
After I created the title card in After Effects for a video I was working on, I showed it to a designer I know for comments. He provided me with a long list of desirable improvements. It was then I realized that although I had read a few books on design, I didn’t know enough and hoped that this book would provide help.This book is primarily a series of tutorials aimed at designers for creating motion graphics with After Effects. One downloads asset files from a website and then is led by the hand through the steps in After Effects necessary to create motion design projects, from animated logos to title sequences for videos, movies and similar projects. The author moves at a comfortable pace, and for the most part, recognizing how complex the After Effects interface is, takes the time to show you where the appropriate buttons and sliders are located.Along the way there are brief discussions of the best way to use graphics to make a point. Most of these are rather simple, but useful if you’ve never encountered them. On the other hand I probably didn’t benefit from being told to rehearse a presentation to a client. I wish there had been more technical design discussion at a greater depth. For example, my consultant pointed out that the white titles I presented over a video title card should not be the purist white, but rather a little grayer so as not to shock the viewers’ eyes. The design instruction provided by Jackson did not go to this level.One should be very careful in following the instructions exactly because of the busy interface of After Effects. For example, to select a color for a shape, there is a box with the word “fill†next to it. If you click on the box you get one drop down menu but if you click on the word “fill†you get a different drop down menu. The author is precise in his instruction but it’s easy to click on the related but wrong item.There was a section on using Cinema 4D, which is an After Effects plug-in created by Cineware. Unfortunately Cineware has updated this software. If you download the update, Jackson’s instructions will not work.While this is an excellent book for designers, it’s less useful for videographers, especially for lone wolves trying to do it all. There’s just too much possible for the person attempting a good video to also learn to create complex graphics other than perhaps some typography. In addition there are many tools available in After Effects that are not mentioned like the ability to round trip with Premiere Pro, or to apply a vignette to a video clip.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge
