Amazon.com Review

Abelson and Sussman's classic Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs teaches readers how to program by employing the tools of abstraction and modularity. The authors' central philosophy is that programming is the task of breaking large problems into small ones. The book spends a great deal of time considering both this decomposition and the process of knitting the smaller pieces back together. The authors employ this philosophy in their writing technique. The text asks the broad question "What is programming?" Having come to the conclusion that programming consists of procedures and data, the authors set off to explore the related questions of "What is data?" and "What is a procedure?" The authors build up the simple notion of a procedure to dizzying complexity. The discussion culminates in the description of the code behind the programming language Scheme. The authors finish with examples of how to implement some of the book's concepts on a register machine. Through this journey, the reader not only learns how to program, but also how to think about programming.

This was the book that made me want to be a computer programmer. When I read it, I had no knowledge of programming beyond a little Pascal, and rudiments of C.It had a massive impact on me. It consumed me, to the point where I had difficulty finishing assignments for my classes (I did not study CS as an undergrad). What the book does is give you a vocabulary and knowledge about programming that is hard to find anywhere else. The text, the examples and exercises, have a mathematical flavor, and that may turn off many potential readers, who would rather gadget around than find elegant solutions for the 8-queens puzzle or efficient algorithms to compute Fibonacci numbers.I've lent this book to several friends who were interested in learning to program, and in all cases they have returned it to me, saying it went over their heads. There seem to be two camps in computer programming:- the gadgeteers, who want to hook devices together and make them do fun things- the scientists, who appreciate computing as a medium in itselfThis book is for the second type.

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs is one of those much admired, frequently discussed, oft purchased but rarely read classics. It's not an easy read: It took me four tries to get through it.But it's worth the effort: By the time you are done you will know about imperative programming, functional programming, meta programming, lazy data structures and everything in between. This is one book that should be on every programmer's list.

I have only worked part of the way through the book, but it is one of the best books I've had the pleasure of learning from. It has an academic mathematical flavor to it, and the material is fairly dense; but the authors are masterful teachers and the exercises are very effective. Scheme is a fascinating language. At first it is uncomfortable to look at, especially if you're used to more mainstream languages. But once you get acclimated, you begin to see the beauty and raw power it holds. I recommend using the Racket IDE with the SICP extension when working through the book.

You need it, too. I won't pretend to have more useful insight into the art and craft of programming, or into SICP's relationship to it, than Paul Graham or Peter Norvig- if you want to know which reviews to trust, look these cats up.The discussion in the reviews usually concludes that this is the book that separates the computer scientists from the mere programmers. There is a definite logic to this. If you want a book that will have you churning out code that does something helpful in half an hour(because you don't think the several ways to calculate the Fibonacci Sequence are helpful), by all means, pick up Learning Perl or just read the Python documentation. They are great tools. If, however, you want to tool up on problem-solving technique a whole level or three higher up, SICP is for you. The Wizard Book is about learning to think better. Here is where I diverge from the idea that this book is for only computer scientists, though. I am an artist, graduated from college with a BA in art, going to graduate school for an MFA. SICP is one of the books that changed how I work and think. It will make you a better programmer if you read (and reread (and reread)) it in the same way that learning Latin will make you understand language itself in a whole new way. I use ideas from SICP constantly, to design software, but also to design staircases. The book is slow-going, no doubt about it, but you'll have a whole new mental toolset at the end.One caveat- this book is freely distributed in its entirety on MIT's website. I still bought a copy, though: who knows how long this internet thing will last, but SICP is going to be relevant forever.

Great book. Has changed my perspective on the subject. I would classify it as an advanced book in the subject of computer programming. If you have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of computer science I recommend reading this book.

One of my favorite textbooks from undergrad. It was used in my first CS class. It was first exposure to a language other than BASIC, so I acknowledge the bar was pretty low, but I was blown away.

The authors have an ambitious goal - to fundamentally change the way you think about computing. Scheme is used as a vehicle to illustrate how large, complex systems can be designed by abstraction. Several real-world examples are used: a picture language, a circuit simulator, a compiler and a PROLOG-like pattern matching language. To get a flavor of this book, search for "SICP Lecture 1a" in Google Video. It's the first of 20 lectures delivered by the authors of the book in 1986. If you decide to purchase the book, use it in conjunction with these lectures to get the complete SICP experience. You will come out of a smarter, wiser software engineer. Also, how often do you see visionary computer scientists like Peter Norvig and Paul Graham give 5 stars to a book?

I've worked through the first three chapters of exercises, and they are challenging and fun. I'm learning scheme so that I can get better at functional programming in general, mostly in Clojure and Javascript. Scheme is a perfect "teaching language", though, and I think that this book should be any aspiring programmer's first introduction to programming before they even touch a compiled language.

I Really enjoyed this book and the way the author tells the story. The author goes into great detail with battles he was in and the things that he witnessed during the Vietnam War, he does a great job of pulling you into the action with him and the rest of his team. He brings the reader right into the canopied jungles and onto the booby trapped trails. You feel that you make connections with the men on his team and laugh as they have good times in the E-Men's club talking and drinking the night away. And you cringe when anything bad happens to a member. It also shows how war changes a man as he goes through his tour Greenberg tells of his emotions and certain things that changed them in his Tour of Duty. And of course he tells about the men he served with on the Radio Relay hills as well as LRRP's. Thanks for your service Mr. Greenberg.

This author gives a compelling firsthand account of what it's like to be a soldier in the Vietnam war. His raw emotional account had me on the edge of my seat at times and in tears at others. War is hell and if you didn't know it before, you really know it after reading this poignant account of this marine's experience. I highly recommend this book.

Greenburg has written a winner about one of the USMC's most famous units. His descriptions depicting the danger of being a Recon Marine are spot on. Imagine if you will going for 5 days and never uttering a word. Silence was key to staying alive. Rick describes in detail the adrenaline rush and the fear of contact, a feeling that it is hard to understand for the uninitiated. I too fought with 1st Recon and Rick's book raised the hair on my arms as I was transported to back in the day. Semper Fi, Rick. A home run.

HISTORICAL FICTION. "When I first started writing Silent Heroes, the original intention to be for family changed over the weeks, months and years it took to write. After receiving encouragement from fellow authors to proceed on this route, the book was no longer a memoir, but rather historical fiction based on actual events". I was quite disappointed when l came across this hidden sentence.

Husband not much of a reader and certainly not much of a "feeler", but this book helped on both of those points. He thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, the story told and how in a way it helped validate his own feelings of experiences from Nam. He has opened up a bit more since reading and I feel this has truly helped him unload a bit those memories he and many like him- carry further than need be.

I was in the U.S. Army as the war in Vietnam was heating up, but I never had to go there. One always wonders if he would "measure up" in a combat zone. When I read "Silent Heroes" it was clear to me that my fears were shared by many others and to learn how they dealt with them gives me courage that under the same circumstances I might survive and actually do some good. Rick Greenberg has written as a warrior under fire and his adventure comes alive to me especially because I know something of military life and procedures and how to follow orders. As for the horrors and butchery of combat, I am okay with experiencing that through his writing. I see that others are pleased with the correctness of unit identification and historical accuracy, so I am glad to know for sure that this action was part of what went on in Vietnam. Thank you, Rick!

I have read many books over the years about combat and how it changes the individual Marine or soldier. Starting with "The Naked and the Dead and over 40 years of reading history books and other "war stories" came upon Corporal Greenberg' s recounting of his time as a recon marine. I found it to be riveting and real concerning the reality of life while fighting a war that demanded ferocity in combat and still having to deal with the effort in trying to remain sane. My 3 years of active duty as a marine lieutenant between Korea a nd Vietnam were not anything like what Marines, whether recon or regular infantry units, had to endure. It is my firm belief that the book is tribute to Corporal Greenberg and the Corps and its history and traditions.

A well-written and accurate account of a year as a recon radio operator. As an Army veteran, I am a bit surprised to learn that these Marine teams were often led by young enlisted men and often corporals. Equivalent Army teams usually included a Lieutenant or often a Captain. I admire the bravery and sacrifice of Corporal Geenberg and the members of those recon teams. I have a good friend who was in the 1st Recon Bn a few months after Greenberg left. He confirmed the accuracy of Greenberg's accounts.

Explaining the origins of the unique is famously difficult. Through elegantly showing the simplicity of the underlying mechanism, Berwick and Chomsky adroitly surmount this problem in the case of that most remarkable of all human uniquenesses, our possession of language.―Ian Tattersall, author of The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack: And Other Cautionary Tales from Human EvolutionNothing talks like humans do. Nothing even comes close. This sets up an interesting evolutionary problem: how did this unique capacity arise in the species? Unfortunately, approaching this question intelligently requires combining skills that seldom travel in tandem. Linguists know a lot about the principal features of human language but little about how evolution works, and biologists know a lot about how evolution works but little about the distinctive properties of human language. Enter Berwick and Chomsky's marvelous little book. In a mere four lucid and easily accessible chapters they educate linguists about the central mechanisms driving evolution and bring biologists up to date on the key distinctive features of natural language. Anyone interested in this topic must read this book.―Norbert Hornstein, Professor, Department of Linguistics, University of MarylandBerwick and Chomsky, masters of language and computer science, make a daring proposition: the phenomenon 'human language' arose when the brain evolved to instantiate the simple operation 'Merge.' At this crucial moment the complex trait, which led to a new mode of evolution, fell into place. The book is captivating and a must for everyone interested in evolution and humans. It is a landmark that will define future research.―Martin Nowak, Professor of Mathematics and Biology, Harvard UniversityThis book totally redefines the debate on the evolution of language. By judiciously incorporating recent advances in the theory of evolution and in linguistic theory, Berwick and Chomsky present a decisive case for the rapid emergence of language in the species. A witty and engaging introduction to language from a biological perspective, this is science writing at its best.―Stephen Crain, Distinguished Professor, Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University, and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders

Ever since I read Chomsky's SYNTACTIC STRUCTURES soon after it first appeared, I thought he should team up with a bird expert. It has happened: Robert Berwick studies bird song (among other linguistic-related things). The results are as interesting as I predicted. The reason is that if you want to understand language evolution, you need to look at sophisticated nonhuman systems, and primates are astonishingly simple about communicating: they give basically instinctive noises in simple contexts. Even chimps can learn only simple two-word combinations in sign language (though this book understates what they can do). Birds are different: the most sophisticated songbirds not only learn their songs, they often incorporate other birds' songs and other noises in their own songs, creatively reworking the learned sounds to fit their own song models. My garden has a family of mockingbirds, so I am exposed almost daily to a potentially infinite amount of creativity as the male creates his own new phrases and often works learned noises into these. No mammal does anything like this; it's parallel evolution between birds and humans. Birds also manage duality of patterning, clear separation of learned songs from simple instinctive calls, and possibly even displacement (does my mockingbird think of killdeer when he imitates one and none are around?). So, if birds are skilled at infinitely productive learned symbolic communication, what do humans do that is special? Berwick and Chomsky nail it: on pp 141-144, they point out the two key didferences. First, birds don't say anything new. My mockingbird says he's on territory, welcomes his friends and neighbors, impresses and reinforces his bond with his mate, provides dire warnings to cats, hawks, and rival male mockingbirds, and doesn't do much else (see books by D. Kroodsma, Peter Marler and Hans Slabbekoorn, etc., on what bird songs say). Second, and more important, mockingbirds and other songbirds organize their songs as simple phrases--one to four part sequences of notes with no higher order. Humans can cheerfully do as Marcel Proust did and write a 4000-page, 7-volume novel with sentences up to four pages long. This requires several levels of hierarchy (recursion). This in turn requires what Berwick and Chomsky call Merge: the ability to combine concepts in new ways, at stacked hierarchic levels, as in a complex sentence with nested relative clauses. My mockingbird does Merge, but only at the most elementary level--planning how to string disparate notes and sounds into a well-turned phrase. So, how did this evolve? A key insight is that brain wiring is different between songbirds and humans on the one hand, and nonsinging birds (like chickens) and nonhuman primates on the other. We (birds and humans) have a circuit connecting memory, higher-order planning, and vocal production. They don't. (The neurology is complex but well described in this book.) So we can deploy our higher-order planning function, raid our verbal memory for words and other symbols, and put it all together in a highly planned manner--then produce it as speech, or we can write it out, or gesture it, or sing it, or make posters of it with emojis and other nonverbal symbols. Interesting, that.So how did all this evolve? Berwick and Chomsky think the critical step--the liberation of the Merge function to allow literally infinite sentence-making--was quite recent, coming with modern humans, i.e. from about 150,000 years ago (possibly slowly evolving from 200,000 to 80,000). They must remain agnostic about how much speech earlier hominins had, since we have no idea, but they imply Neanderthals and earlier humans had nothing much beyond what chimps do. This is unlikely. Neanderthals' brains were as big as ours, and even if used more for physical issues and less for thinking (as Berwick and Chomsky hypothesize) they must have had a fairly sophisticated communicating and thinking mechanism. The most obvious proof is the stone tools. My colleagues Philip Wilke and Leslie Quintero are among the dozen or so leading experts on stone tools, and they state flatly that you can't teach stone tool making, even at the more advanced Homo erectus level, let alone the far more sophisticated Neanderthal one, without verbal instruction. Maybe it was simple, but it was there. Meanwhile, Robin Dunbar has long pointed out that people use language--when talking--mainly to talk about social relationships--much more than they do about tools. Surely Neanderthals were the same. So I assume that language developed slowly from Homo erectus through later forms to ourselves. On the other hand, as Berwick, Chomsky, and countless others have pointed out, there is no known art or other purely communicative stuff from premodern humans! So fancy communication like language is indeed probably late. I assume that earlier people did something like what my mockingbirds do--that the Merge function developed not all at once but through one-step, then two-step, then a-few-step, then with modern people potentially infinite recursion. Note that Merge is not obviously different from planning in general--we can plan very complex, hierarchic schemes in advance, whereas birds can only manage simple plans added to instinctive capacities.Berwick and Chomsky think language evolved for thinking--i.e. talking to yourself. I doubt it. I have to agree with the majority, that it evolved for communication, no doubt about social relationships, hunting and foraging, toolmaking, and the other things people have to do. But, since it is available for talking to yourself about your plans, it must have been liberated for that purpose as it developed, so evidently both functions were always present. One annoying error comes right at the start of the book: the authors refract Alfred Wallace's claim that language seems wildly overadequate for what "savages" have to talk about. (This claim is echoed by other recent writers, e.g. D. Bickerton.) Wallace can be excused for not knowing about traditional societies, but from the days of Boas, Kroeber, Lowie, Sapir and others we have had access to monumental collections of linguistic materials recorded from small-scale, technologically "simple" societies all over the world. Their linguistic productions include extremely sophisticated poetry, tales, religious texts, social lore, rules, moral and philosophical musings, and so on--not at all inferior to modern writings. (They are less extensive, but the combined total across many societies is still enormous.) So all modern humans for the last 80,000 years have used the full extent of their linguistic skills, Wallace or no. Berwick and Chomsky, who adore formalizations, would no doubt object that those guys don't do advanced math or formal analysis. Well, neither do most moderns, and that is a very specialized function of language. When it comes to everything else, from great poetry to great rhetoric (I have heard some in Indigenous languages), we are not notably better off than the speakers of the other 6800 or so languages in the world. We just produce more, because we have printing presses. So there were plenty of reasons to want a sophisticated, infinitely productive mechanism for both internal speech and social communication--in fact language makes sense only if you have a speech community of a few hundred (at least). It is indeed overadequate for a family or small band. I assume it evolved along with the growth of group size among humans--which also took off especially in the last 200,000 years.

Apparently unique to our species, it seems to have evolved relatively recently in evolutionary time. How such a significant change could have come about in such a short period contradicts the gradualist view of evolution, but the authors convincingly argue that large phenotypic changes may result from small genetic changes. The explanation that stochastic factors besides natural selection play a large part in evolutionary change is fascinating. I found the argument that our language capacity is qualitatively different from anything existing in other species convincing, namely our ability to use the Basic Property of Merge to recursively generate a digitally infinite array of possible sentences and the idea of language as primarily an instrument for thought rather than communication. Parts of the book get a bit technical, especially the discussions of specific genes that may be related to language, but overall it’s an engaging and fascinating book.

I have many criticisms of this work:1. The title of the book suggests that it is written for the general educated public. I estimate that one would need a degree in linguistics to properly comprehend the contents. The book teems with references to advanced concepts in language. My own self-education in linguistics comes from reading perhaps 30 books on the subject, and I found the book to be heavy sledding. The title should have communicated its highly technical content, e.g., "An Analysis of Evolutionary Considerations and Cognitive Development in the Rise of Language".2. The writing is ghastly. Here's a sample: "We also have an explanation for the apparent fact that the diversity, complexity, and malleability of language is mostly, maybe entirely, localized in an external system ancillary to the core internal processes of language structure and semantic interpretation." Does this mean that an earlier conclusion provides the "explanation"? Where is that conclusion described? The author relies heavily relative pronouns (this, that) whose referents are seldom apparent. The author also refers to previous concepts with confusing terminology. At one point the author criticizes an "article". Working backwards, the only possible referent I could find was a mention of a scientific paper two paragraphs earlier. I have never before seen the word "article" used to refer to a published scientific paper.3. The vocabulary is simultaneously polysyllabic and vague. In another example, the author discusses "the Basic Property of human language -- the ability to construct a digitally infinite array of hierarchically structured expressions with determinate interpretations at the interfaces with other organic systems". What does "digital" mean here? The brain is not a digital device. Language is not a digital system. Why does the author tack on all that extra baggage about 'determinate interpretations' and 'interfaces with other organic systems'. Are there interfaces with inorganic systems that language doesn't apply to?In several other places, the author writes that language is not analyzed "left to right". Language in its primary form is spoken and has no left hand or right hand. The author is thinking about written languages -- not all of which proceed from left to right. Some are in right to left order; some are top to bottom; some switch directions with each line. My plaint is trivial, but it serves as an example of sloppy wording on the part of the author.4. The author treats other ideas and authors with disdain. He mischaracterizes their arguments in straw man style. He doesn't merely disagree with them; they are "wrong", "incorrect", "misled", etc. My warning sirens sound when I encounter this kind of writing in a scientific context.5. The sentence that the author frequently relies on to exemplify his analysis is "Instinctively birds that fly swim." This sentence doesn't make sense. The author provides a lengthy explanation of its meaning -- but I challenge any reader to ask a normal English speaker to interpret the sentence. The confusion elicited by the request blows the author's reasoning out of the water.6. I reject the central thesis of the book, as expressed in this sentence: "...language evolved for thought and interpretation: it is fundamentally a system of meaning." The author rejects the notion that language evolved for purposes of communication. I find this thesis preposterous. The author entirely dismisses the notion that language is fundamentally spoken; he maintains that speaking and hearing language are mere external "interfaces" to the 'real' language capacity, which he claims is a computational system. This would necessitate that the ability to speak language developed as an afterthought to the rise of language. That is, first humans experienced some mighty leap in cognitive power, and then had to invent speaking and listening in order to communicate their new-found brilliant thoughts to each other. All those anatomic changes required for speaking (the descent of the larynx, the greatly improved control of musculature in the tongue and lips, improved breath control) followed in quick succession.I find it far more likely that a capability as powerful as language developed in a long series of small steps, each of which provided some small adaptive benefit. The author explicitly rejects this notion, relying on what seemed to me to be a "hand is quicker than the eye" argument about Darwinism. By piling up a mountain of dense verbiage, the author somehow manages to suggest that evolution by small increments is not the only possible mechanism, yet never quite explains what the alternative is. At one point, he denigrates an author's suggestion that language "popped up" in one fortuitous jump -- but later seems to offer the same explanation. Of course, his writing is too vague to be certain of anything. All in all, this book is a disaster. I can see it having some utility to serious students of linguistics as a stimulating contrarian expression. That's the only positive assessment I can offer.

A lovely read. Great for a general audience (like yours truly). Technical but never beyond lay comprehension. Enjoyed it tremendously.

The concept is amazing. The style seems to be for someone from this field. It is like very long scientific article.

Well I guess reading this book didn't help me a bit to keep my bonzai tree from dying. It was informative, but I could kill a cactus.

Since this is the shorter version of another bonsai book, a lot of info is left out, like how to do things step by step. I realize these are just tips but if you are getting tips then that most likely means you're more of a beginner and if that's the case then the lack of step-by-step instructions makes it not the best books for beginners.I would suggest you try to get a more fuller book if you really want to get serious.

If it hadn't only been $5, I would have returned it. I was looking for a book to get started with bonsai but this book is terrible. If you only have an interest in looking at pictures of bonsai and not in growing them, you might like this book. If you actually want to try your hand at the art, look elsewhere for a guide because this one won't even get you started. It would be an okay book for a children's classroom to introduce them to something new but is otherwise useless.A lot of the information it does have is useless, it will tell you that you can grow a bonsai from cuttings(which anyone with any plant experience would already know) but it does not tell you how to cut and prepare it(someone that didn't know you could get a tree from a cutting would need this information).Additionally, it does not deliver on the promises it has on the back cover. It's like a badly organized power-point turned into a book.

Bonsai - 101 Essential Tips, won't be the only book I read on the subject, but it is great for a beginner to bonsai. It was only $5 at the time of purchase, and a very good value for that price. This is the size of a pocket book rather than a full sized book. I wish that this had been even more in depth. Maybe that would discourage some people from the hobby though. This was a concise overview and how to. It explained the history, why to do it, ways to get started building your collection of specimens ( grow from seed, grow from cuttings, collect from the wild, etc). It showed how to take cuttings, how to root them, how to do air layering, etc. It explained the different bonsai styles and included pictures of each. He listed attributes that give bonsai character - texture, bark, shape, taper, ...ways to give your piece that aged and graceful look. Then for each style it explained the tools used, plants, methods of achieving the styles, wiring, pots used, ways to display, and methods of collecting trees. There was a fair amount of attention given to root trimming and care. There was also a fertilizing and care/maintenance guide. Finally, it gave a list of about 20 trees that tend to work well for bonsai. Each explanation and each tree or plant explained had a color photo to accompany it.It is surprising just how much information fit into such a small and short book. Harry is a man of few but well thought out words. This would make a great addition to a gift set for someone wanting to get started with bonsai. It is encouraging, not condescending in any way, easy to follow, and makes it seem like with a bit of patience, even the beginner reading the book can achieve good results with the advanced methods presented (rooting on rocks was even completely shown/explained). I really think it gave about as much information as a much longer book simply because it was about the art and methods and was not filled with fluff and anecdotes. It would not be something I would select for an intermediate to advanced bonsai hobbyist though. This book was not meant for that level of bonsai enthusiast.

I just purchased this to learn about bonsai and see how it works. I may or may not start my own bonsai; I was thinking about it because I have an aero garden. This books provides a lot of photos and explanations how to do everything from even picking your species of tree and the soil, to pruning and making it a perfect bonsai. As a complete novice who has never done anything with bonsai and very little gardening at all, this book is GREAT.

So this book is okay, but not great. I would assume anyone buying this book would have some sort of interest in bonsai and have already done a little preliminary research. Unfortunately, that means that this book won't be very helpful. I was very disappointed with the information provided in this book. I know this book is titled "essential tips" and therefore the information contained should be short, sweet, and to the point - but I was still hoping there would be some new information to learn from this book. Unfortunately, all the tips in this book are things you can learn from doing a quick search on Google. I feel like this book was created for someone who has absolutely zero knowledge of bonsai. All of the tips were just too general for my taste. However, I don't want to completely cast this book aside. This book has absolutely wonderful pictures in it - something I find very useful when learning about bonsai. They're clear and crisp and high quality. I found that to be the most valuable aspect of this book - and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 3. Looking around the internet, I've noticed it can be hard to find good pictures, especially step by step pictures showing the basic pruning and shaping methods. This book has that, and what the text itself lacks, it makes up for in its pictures. So with that, I'll say that this book is decent. If you know nothing at all about bonsai and are looking for a brief introduction, or if you'd like a handy picture guide covering the basics - then I'd recommend this book. If however, you're looking for a textual guide or perhaps to gain some more advanced knowledge about bonsai, I'd tell you to save your money and buy something else.

The book was informative. I appreciate that the book was an introduction and touched on many topics. It did not go into depth on anything in particular. Especially not into the full on genetics and breeding in depth. The main reason for giving this book 4 start and not 5, is because i found information in the book dated. There is information that can and should be updated with all the technology and times of what is happening in the industry. (examples of this is feminized seeds and auto flowering).

Outdated info and even the basics of plant genetics/breeding were better explained in my High School biology textbook. It as OK until I found myself referencing wikipedia to clarify basic topics the book tried to describe. It felt more like an outline than a final text. Maybe in 2006 it was cutting edge, but I would move on now.

A wonderful book with an abundance of knowledge. I am so glad I purchased this book. It provides a wealth of knowledge on basic growing as well as, of course and lots more on, breeding cannabis. It's hard to follow at times though. The presentation of the info gets my head all twisted up. I've had to read some parts up to four times, but that's just what it takes to learn 'it' sometimes.

If you are at all interested in Breeding Cannabis. Look no further than the Breeders Bible by Greg Green. Stocked cover to cover with an attention to extreme detail for breeding, back crossing and locking in desired traits ect...... A Great reference guide! Its a great read for growers as well. It sheds light and terminology on Genetic problems one may mistake for environmental or nutrient stress.

If you think you want to grow, buy this book. you will understand the fundamentals of where your genetics are coming from and how they got them. must read!!!!!

i just loved it, i went thru it twice, the information is very clear and helpful and a good read. now that you brought it up i might read it again today, its raining and very cold, thanks hope this helped. christy

Strongly Recommended book if you looking for great info on how to grow and breeding your plants

Great insight for years / crops to come. If you need to learn about breeding, this is going to be a great help!

Great book, but with a very small font size - both me and my husband were unpleasantly surprised.Lots of information, but again - hard to read as casual reading - need to have good lightning source and so on.

This book is very useful for those that want to teach their babies to swim. I recommend you buy it before or right after the baby is born, because it is better to start with a few weeks old, and I waited too long to buy it.

I took an infant swim class in college years ago and was looking for the curriculum I used there. I bought several books and while this is a pretty good one, not all of the methods are practical. Still, there is not much available on infant swimming lessons and anything is better than nothing so it was a good purchase.

An excellent collection for ken-ken freaks. I’m on my second time through and will probably do it again! One thing though: Puzzles 151 and 154 are identical.

We are a family full of ken ken solvers. We could do these ken kens for a lifetime and would still have more to solve. Challenging and fun, nothing beats a ken. Great Christmas purchase.

I like the variety of difficulty in this book, which makes it a safe gift to give.

Received item early and it was as described.

I initially got this for my husband who is a big kenken fan. He really enjoys the more complicated puzzles and I recently got into it for some of the simpler, light puzzles.

My 4th grader loves this book. Will Shortz has done a great job building challenging and interesting puzzles. Another winner from the famous NY Times editor.

Love Ken Ken and you can never go wrong with Will Shortz. Go for it if you like a challenge. Keep that brain active!

If you like Suduko you'll love KenKen puzzles, and this is a great book to get you going in the world of KenKen puzzles.

Item arrived earlier than expected in excellent condition. My two year old is fascinated and listens attentively even though I think the concepts are be way too advanced for him to grasp. I was surprised when he asked to hear it again after his nap and said " It's a Good Book!" when we finished.Clearly he doesn't understand everything; there are many abstract concepts like the rotation of the earth on its axis and the rotation of the earth around the sun, but he does relate to the pictures and the information about the seasons which he is experiencing, like snow and the cold of winter. He also is a word sponge and repeats everything he hears. There's lots of new vocabulary to enjoy here!

This books is great for kids 8 plus years old but not for younger kids. My 3 year old loves looking through it but I have to paraphrase and skip pages for her

My 6 year old grandson loves viewing documentaries about storms and weather changes so I thought this book would help his understanding of the seasons. My daughter says he likes the book a lot.

My three year old son is learning about seasons in school. We are skipping the parts about the positioning of the earth and the sun. He will be able to increase his understanding as he gets older.

Fabulous book with just the right amount of information for my first grade students. The pictures are bright and colorful with the right balance between interesting to look at and simple enough to understand.

The kids love these and they are very informative!

This is exactly what I was looking for to teach about the relationship of the earth and the sun. Thank you Gail Gibbons for writing such a concise, easy-to-understand book!

Good for introducing the reasons for the seasons, even for grade 5.

The story had me within the first few paragraphs. It just so happens I was in the Quartermaster Corps in the US Army myself, so I could very well relate to the star character. However, I am giving it only four stars because the author's writing style could use some improvement, even though the story line is worth five.

I could not put this down. Very interesting to see what could happen in a post apolcalyptic world! I enjoyed the characters and hope they will return. Meanwhile, I'm storing food, batteries and ammo!

A good book, but a cliffhanger.

This was a pretty good read. Good characters, good story plot. Looked like it was gonna be a good one. And then it was over....... This us supposed to be a book, not a TV show script that continues next week. I really find it quite aggravating. Needless to say...won't be buying any more from this author. Its sad too because it was really very good.

I dislike a story wheh the good guys are slaughtered to obtain a victory. I appreciate a story when the the bad guys get their heads handed to themselves. A very focased narratve on the central character. Looking foward to finish version.

This is a good what-if read. The author has a good introspect into the situation he has built up here.

Great context and characters...Harper who is one of the main characters turned out to be very forceful in getting the job done...She thought they found somewhere safe to stay with the townspeople until a ruthless gang showed up...very well written

Good action and I like the main character being a woman. Some of the firearm related stuff should be more accurate, like "semi-auto assault rifle" and "M-60 cannon", but so far, a good read.
