My enjoyment of reading is credited to the likes of Lee Child, Patrick Robinson, Jack Coughlin, L T Ryan, Leo J Maloney, Chris Allen, Russell Blake and so many more of the covert ops genre. And then comes Steven Konkoly whose "Alpha" I just finished. What a wild ride. A journey that took me into a maze of entanglements between all of the Organizations and Operations and Operators we've come to know if counterterrorism is the underlying plot. For some of the book, I didn't know if I was heading into a new development or lost in the maze. Then my confusion becomes crystal. I won't be a spoiler and give up any of this plot. I will just say it would be a big mistake if you didn't read "Alpha", because it's the best writing of this genre I have read. Buying the next book of the series right now.

It has been a while since I have read a good mystery / thriller, and I am glad I picked this one up. The author does a great job of getting you into the character's heads and what they are thinking, and the action is pretty much non-stop and believable from a layman's perspective. This was one of those thrillers I couldn't put down, and stayed up really late in an unsuccessful effort to finish it: that made the next day a little better as I was able to sit in the easy chair and finish. I'm looking forward to starting the next book in the series.I originally picked this up during a free Kindle promotion and as I type this review I see the pricing is all of 99 cents which makes this an outstanding value. Jump on this one while you can at that price, as this is just as good - I think better - than most of the "name brand" thriller authors out there today.

It is a readable book if you don't need much depth or nuance, the the characters, which are all obvious, cartoonishly sketched action movie tropes, are dull and unlikeable. Unhateable too they're so two dimensional. The woman, gorgeous, the janitor Hispanic, etc. The publisher has backed it with some promo funding so it'll get a few reads. Read it. Don't read it. Your life will neither be improved for the experience, nor diminished for want of it.

This was not, to me, your typical thriller with a hero, a sidekick, and an assortment of other characters both supportive and destructive. Add in the practice of these highly resourceful spies, agents and all sorts of antagonists, you come up with some who change names and personalities, who they report to and why they go undercover so deep you think they have a chance of concealing their identity from those who would put an end to their activities. Then, we see some of the most bloody maneuvers that take down anyone who stands in their way of achieving what their mission demands. Altogether, this is pretty exciting stuff and you need to be on your toes while reading it so as not to lose your place on just who is doing what and to whom. I really enjoyed reading this novel and will look forward to acquiring the next in the series. I like the style and the genre.

To me, Robert Ludlum has always been the best of the "conspiracy thriller" writers. Well, I just finished Black Flagged: Alpha in one day and I have the same feelings I had after finishing one of Ludlum's best: mind-blown and breathless at the ride I have just taken. Steven Konkoly, thank you for introducing me to Daniel Petrovich.Daniel Petrovich is a former covert operative living the quiet life in Maine with his wife Jessica when he is called back to perform one last job by his former commander. What follows is a twisting, bloody, adrenaline-pumping race as Daniel tries to stay ahead of the FBI, CIA, and multiple law enforcement agencies trying to capture/kill him after his cover is blown. To try to explain the plot further would take too many words. There are inter-agency rivalries and vendettas, long-buried secrets surfacing and rampant paranoia that keep Daniel literally running for his life.And just when you think you've got a grip on the action, Konkoly throws in a few final plot twists I never saw coming (I love it when that happens!). This story is brilliantly constructed, the characters are well-drawn and developed, the pacing is amped to the max. If you like your conspiracies convoluted and crazed, this book is for you.Note: The only complaint I have with this book is the editing. There were just enough minor grammatical errors (past and present tenses in the same sentence, etc.) to pull my attention away from the story momentarily. But for that, this was a near-perfect reading experience for me. Well done!

This entire series and tie-ins with other novels by this author is an action packed series that you just can't put down. Despite knowing that I can close the book and finish the story tomorrow I found myself extremely reluctant to stop reading. Plenty of action, exotic places and situations, a diabolical renegade scientist who will eventually causes a major catastrophe despite everything this experienced and superbly trained team can do to stop him and his terrorist colleagues. I really enjoyed the entire series and I keep bumping into vague references to many of the characters and situations in other books making the entire series feel like reality instead of a series of fictional novels. Weapons and tactics are up to date and sensibly employed as they would be in real life. You won't be satisfied until you have read the entire series. . . and then you will want more.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book. Spy thrillers aren't usually my preferred genre. I called that one wrong. This was a very tightly written story. Every event led to another. No wasted words or action. I never felt the recessive a cheap shot scene added simply to make the story work.it all flowed. Good work!Yes there is a bit of guts and gore but you can't go around killing people (very efficiently, I must say) without that but it was understated compared to some others in this genre. Just enough to get the job done.I did see one of the big connections between people coming. But that just made the story better. I think I'll have to see what happens next in the remaining books in this series.

It's my experience that people and companies come in two types; those who are just getting by with minimal effort, and those that believe in professionals. Despite the nature of their work, the former Disneyland custodial cast members were the latter; professionals who took true pride in their work. Face it, messes happen everywhere, including Disneyland. From horse droppings to parade debris to poop art in the bathrooms, somebody has the job of cleaning it up. More often that not, nobody notices when the custodial staff does their job right. The park is clean, and when something happens, they respond to clean it up as quickly as possible.The book is insightful into the world experienced daily by the "sweepers". Everything from staffing to job assignments to stories of dealing with the unexpected (or, as in the case of the elephants on parade, what was overlooked). There are stories of celebrities, special events, and, of course, the worst of the worst messes that required clean up.

Everyone who visits Disneyland marvels at the cleanliness of such a busy park. Walt Disney set great store in having a clean environment for his guests. This book is a peak behind the curtain at how this massive feat is accomplished. It offers an engaging narrative on the myriad of tasks involved, the methodology in performing them, and how much fun it can be cleaning up after huge crowds. These two have stories both fun and interesting to the Disney fan. The chapters are clearly labeled so that those with weaker constitutions can avoid some of the grittier clean-ups, and if you are not interested in exactly how how each type of the hundreds of trash cans in the park are emptied, you can skip the intricate details. This being a first effort and self published, there are some grammatical errors and typos. These are of no detriment to the book if you are interested in Disneyland, celebrity interaction, and the obvious impact that working for the Disney organization can have. They have also included an excellent glossary of Disney-speak for those of us who have never worked for the Mouse. In summary, grab a pan and broom and give these two a chance, they wrote this book out of passion and it shows throughout.

I too worked within Disneyland Custodial back in the late 1970's (as a Seasonal fast-food busser) and this book brought back many memories. Even though I worked there years before these authors did, many of the people and situations they wrote about I knew well. This is a very in-depth work told from the "source" with humor and insight. While this book will hold a lot for past and current Disney cast members, it will be a great read for any Disney fan or those who have marveled at how Disneyland is kept so clean. It also really reflects the dedication by the custodial cast members (and that department) that despite seemingly working at the "low end" of the Disneyland employment totem pole, they are really the backbone of the park.As I said, I worked in that department as well as in merchandising (the shops) and I have to say it was great fun and received great compliments from guests. Next time you are at a Disney theme park (or any place that is kept so clean), take a moment to thank those who keep it that way!Thanks for the book Lynn and Ken, and thanks for keeping Mickey's park so nice!

Cleaning the Kingdom is an excellent book for anyone interested in learning more about what happens behind the scenes, and is also interested in Disney history. The authors do a very good job of explaining the job of the custodial staff as it has evolved over the years, and also do a good job of mixing in some unique Disneyland history, stories about interesting guests, events, and other bits of trivia. I really enjoyed their writing and story telling style.

This book is a great insight into the magic that occurs behind the scenes in a very underrepresented and often overlooked department of the parks. I have encountered a few typos, but none of them were drastic enough to impede what the authors were trying to convey. Another edit or revision would have been nice, but overall the material is enjoyable, entertaining, and informative. Both authors clearly share a passion for Disney, and this book delivers first hand experiences on what it was like to work in custodial at a Disney park. As a listener of the authors' podcast, "The Sweep Spot," and a visitor of all world-wide Disney parks so far, I learned many new things by reading this book. Definitely a recommended read for all Disney park fans!!

This book provides a very detailed view of what it is like to be a custodial cast member at Disneyland. I found the detailed descriptions fascinating, really gave insight into a job I will likely never have the chance to experience. As someone who loves Disneyland but doesn't get to go often I really enjoyed that. I read this as part of my work up before an upcoming vacation to the park. I also loved the stories and insider information you get from hearing these former cast members speak of their experiences in the park. I will never view a certain restroom in the park the same way. I also gained a greater appreciation to all the work that goes into keeping my vacations magical. If you like Disneyland and wonder what it would be like to work there, this is a must read.

I enjoy a well written Disney book and memoirs - this is both. A fun read from an unusual point of view - the often overlooked jani.

Very interesting read on the behind the scenes activity to keep DLand clean. Having worked there in the early years I know it is correct and am enjoying the read and looking forward to more secrets divulged. The writers do a great job putting things in perspective for the reader whether they no nothing about how things work or are familiar with what goes on behind the building facod... Highly recommended if you are a fan of the Magic Kingdon.

These are all great books with so much information. My 7 year old son has been reading them for the past two years and really enjoys them. He remembers so much about history from these books. It gives you odd facts that you may not get from a history book. Beware that some of the books can be a little violet, details about war and killing and such.

I love these books. They're very informative, but the illustrations and the way it is written make it a lot more interesting than dusty old textbooks.

My son enjoys all the books in this series very much!

It is very helpful in learning about and how to treat Tourette's. It is limited as the interventions are for children age 9 or older, so requires a great deal of creativity for me to adapt the interventions to my client who is 5.

This begins as the story of a man, Charles James, who starts out from humble beginnings and ends up making millions. He has had an abusive childhood and, thankfully, seems to have spared the curse of becoming abusive in his turn. Charles, for all that he seems to have everything, has come to realize that he is really empty and has nothing of true value.The “author” of the book has traveled Route 66 looking for inspiration for his next novel. At the end of the journey, when he realizes that he has not found what he was looking and expecting to find, he comes across a dusty and dirty hiker who looks vaguely familiar. When he realizes who the hiker is (Charles), they agree that the author will possibly be given the rights to tell the hiker's story. This book is the first in those tales. As the story is told by way of a look backward through the pages of Charles' journal, it is more autobiographical than biographical in nature.This first book in a new trilogy looks far back into Charles life and shows us a young boy who learns to fight to survive. It is due to these abusive years that Charles turns his back on God and decides that he is his own god. The events described in his younger years are enough to make one weep while reading. We follow his life through the point when he realizes making money is not the same as making a joyful life. The book ends when he is given a truly undeserved chance to start again, to reboot and, hopefully, find a life of true and lasting value.While this is the first book I have read by Richard Paul Evans, it will certainly not be the last. I felt as if I knew the man the story was written about. I cheered when he overcame obstacles and felt sad and disappointed for him when he felt made unwise decisions and yielded to temptations that could destroy his life. In other words, Richard Paul Evans made this character come alive to me. I will be waiting (anxiously) for the second book in this series to be released.

I started to read the book and it didn't capture my attention so I stopped reading it But something kept drawing me back so I started reading it again. Then it happened, I got drawn in the book and then I couldn't put it down. What an amazing story after it got started. I hated to see it end. The story was such a range of emotions, from the abuse the boy had to endure, to letting greed take over his life, but the saddest part for me was when he lost the only person who loved him, treated him with respect and wanted him to be happy. It made me appreciate the life I have. Money doesn't bring happiness. The first book ended at a good place. There wasn't this huge cliff hanger but I am excited for the next book to come out next year. We may if had to wait an extra year for the book but it was, I think, meant to be. The book as it is written now is different than it would of been a year ago. This one once it got started, just flowed along and had so much emotion. A must read for many reasons. It makes you think about things, it is a realistic story and Richard Paul Evans always delivers a fantastic story.

As I read this story, I was surprised (although not disappointed) to find out that this story was not a completely fictional story. It is based loosely on the true story of a man under the alias of Charles James, with the main character telling and reflecting on his life, his rise and fall from grace.Despite Charles making some wrong turns in life as he got older, due to understanding his early life in the beginning of the story, he always remained a likeable and sympathetic character to me. There was a sort of innocence to him in the actions his took, although some can be seen as unforgiveable. But in the end, I easily connected with him and was really rooting for things to turn around for him at the end.And that’s where I will enter my only disappointment with the story. I felt like it ended in a sort of cliffhanger. In the end, Charles saw his opportunity to have a second chance at life, but as a reader, I didn’t get to discover what he made of it—what became of him. And that’s because, since this story is based on a true story, the actual Charles James was still figuring that out as the author made it clear. So I won’t knock down the story for that because despite the cliffhanger ending, as a reader, I got something valuable from it. Not only was I entertained, but I got another view on how easily life can steer one in the wrong direction, causing one to lose everything that matters, but on the positive side, how that wrong direction can open one’s eyes to what really matters. It was a good story all in all. I hope the author stays in touch with the man called Charles James and lets the readers know what became of his second chance.

James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. Easy to learn piano.

I bought these books to continue in the series that I started in a college class but was unable to continue to attend. These are pretty good and easy to read/understand. No baby nonsense and nothing too complicated. So far I have nothing contrary to say about these books. I have lots of beginner books and these dont stand out as particulary great or bad, but if you are considering buying them for their intended use, I doubt you will be diappointed OR thrilled.

From the very beginning, I was taken in by Riley Harper-a just released psychiatric patient suspected (but not convicted) of killing her daughter Clarissa. She was broken and fragile yet determined to stay strong and trust her truth. But what is and isn’t true becomes a challenge for her and the readers of this story. Constantly changing courses, author Andrew E Kaufman skillfully takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotions and questions of what is real in Riley’s life.Written with all female characters, I wondered how a man could get all the little details right, but he did it beautifully! The exquisite way the characters come to life in each chapter kept me engrossed and waiting for the next plot twists, as the web is woven and we are caught up in it!I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC from Netgalley to read this book early and I only agreed to leave a review, and that didn’t affect my opinion in any way.I believe that this novel is Kaufman’s best to date and I know how difficult it was for him to finish it due to several life altering health struggles. That he was able to not only complete, but produce such an amazing story is awe inspiring.I recommend reading this story immediately-but be prepared to stay up late with the lights on! Had a couple sleepless nights while enjoying the ride this story took me on.

A few years ago I stumbled across The Lion, The Lamb and The Hunted by Andrew E. Kaufman. I was immediately hooked - not only by that story but by everything written by Kaufman, prior and since. I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of Kaufman's new book, What She Doesn't Know, for review.Andrew E. Kaufman knows how to twist a story. When you think you have it figured out (IF you can even get that far) everything changes and the reader is sent on a rollercoaster ride of dips and turns that excite and exhaust. I read this book in 2 sittings, only because life forced me to put it down!If you want an engrossing psychological thriller with a heroine you'll root for, give this one a try. Do yourself a favor and look at Kaufman's other works too - all are a worthy escape.

Riley was the prime suspect in her daughter's death. She can remember nothing that happened the night her daughter was killed. The trial ended in a mistrial but after Riley just spiraled out of control and her sister Erin had her committed. The book starts 10 years later with Riley getting out of the psychiatric hospital and trying to start her life over. But her neighbor Samantha catches her eye. And that is about all I can say without spoiling the book.I really liked the beginning of the book. I was sure I had it all figured out. The middle part got a bit over the top I think, had me shaking my head at times. Some of the stuff that happened was just too out there. And then the end happened. It did a complete 360 and I was like "Whoa!" I had to go back and read the last couple of chapters a second time just to wrap my head around what I had just read lolBut while I liked the ending, And things were explained. It did feel rushed to me.

Andrew Kaufman is my newest favorite author. I loved Twisted, but I had no idea he could top that. I was wrong!! I was so arrogant thinking I totally new where this was going. Once again, I was wrong! It is mind-blowing! He is an incredible author who let's nothing hold him back. You will not be disappointed! #whatshedoesntknow

If I were to use a comparison, I would say this is similar or on par to a lifetime television movie. It was entertaining with major flaws off reasoning. For example, there were chapters in which the protagonist had to try and prove her villainous friend was not a figment of her imagination. Yet, there were plenty of people who had seen them together doing activities. For example, the hairdresser, coffee shop or clothing store. Or, this person was chasing her all over town via a car and causing accidents. So, how could no one see her. All they had to do was go talk to these people. Similarly, a detective was following her most of the time. Again, she didn't see anything? Also, too many things were unbelievable, or way over the top. At times the level of crazy was taken too far and became funny. So, definitely not on the par of those I might consider excellent writers of this type of genre. But, I listened to it and made it through to the end. So, not the worse either.

I eagerly bought this book, with genuine excitement, as I had read Andrew Kaufman's three other books and thought they were outstanding. I felt he is one of the best writers of mystery/suspense that I have read on Kindle. This book was a real disappointment. I just didn't seem genuine and I felt that the plot, the heroine and especially the ending were just plain silly. But that's just my opinion. I really didn't buy it.

Andrew E. Kaufman, writes the kind of creep you out of your socks, suspense that makes it hard to go to sleep at night!From the 1st book of his that I ever read, to this one, I am constantly amazed at how stinking brilliant he is!Keep the lights on! There don't have to be ghoulish monsters with multiple heads and rows of teeth, to make you wonder if your skin will ever quit crawling!

I was lucky enough to stumble across this author's work when he first started out, and his work continues to get better and better. This is his 5th book, and in my opinion, his best work yet! A well written thriller about a lady with memory loss and mental illness. An excellent plot, no wasted words you need to skip over, well developed characters, and an ending you won't see coming. I binge read this book; it was impossible to put down once I got started. If you like to be kept guessing until the end, this is the book for you. You won't be sorry!

And reintroduction of Neanderthals (p. 141) would raise hair-raising moral and legal problems and have unpredictably and not necessarily beneficial consequences. I like the iconoclastic idea of “very specialized and highly trained parenting—well beyond the current random assignment of child to parent (p. 224). But this leads to the critical issue ignored in the book, namely who shall decide on and enforce glonslly required safeguards and regulations?Thus, the statement than “the march toward transhumanism, is not knowable in advance, it is at least within human control. And that should be a comforting thought (p. 242) is daydreaming. To globally control such processes, including in rogue states, requires nothing less than a strict global regime, up to a Conscientious Global Leviathan. The book quotes, rightly so, the view of Kurzweil that future technological change will be so rapid and profound that it will constitute “a rupture in the fabric of human history” (p. 242). But it does not draw the compelling conclusion namely, as i put it in one of my books “it is absurd to believe that everything is going to change, but politics will and can remain the same.“ The statement “probably no eugenics (government control of genetic inheritance) but heavily laden with W-genics (you-eu-genics, individual control over their own body genetics) and euphenics (changing traits by changing environments, drugs, and devices) (p. 261) raises the right questions, but is not aware of its doubtful assumptions and raises harsh issues rather them coping with them. A book on regenesis technologies is not obliged to consider socio-political implications. But the authors do make comments on them. If so the fundamental question who shall make all the fateful choices should at least be raised. Not doing so is, in my view, a serious lacunae. But in no way does it diminish the excellence of the book as far as emerging gene engineering and related technologies are concerned.Professor Yehezkel Dror

I've met people who really like this book, and people who hate it. I am one of the people who really liked it.This is one of the most interesting science books I've ever read (with my major being molecular and cellular biology). He brought up so many revolutionary, interesting things you can do with synthetic biology, from resurrecting extinct animals like the Pyrenean Ibex, to using E. Coli to fight cancer. Oh and biobricks. Can't forget biobricks. Or mirror life.I will admit that it is very very long. Not in terms of pages, but in terms of the complexity of his ideas. Nothing in science is simple, and Church knows that. I actually appreciated this. A lot of science books out there dumb it down for the general population, but Church didn't (at least not to the same extent). We me being a researcher, it was really nice.

A bit of a dense book (which is why I gave it only 4 stars). But if you read it through, a world will open for you. The book is about synthetic genetics -- how the advances that are happening right now, but especially in the decades to come, will change the world and blow your mind. There is a lot in this book. But I would like to just talk about my favorite part -- the iGEM competition. iGEM is an international student competition for genetic engineering. As Church says [referring to the year 2005], "Undergrads were now doing things, largely in a spirit of fun, that professional molecular biologists would have been hard-pressed to achieve a mere ten years earlier." In the 2007 competition, the team from UC Berkeley engineered E. coli to produce a blood substitute that could be freeze-dried and stored, and then could be reconstituted and grown up in large volumes when needed. In 2008, the grand prize winner was a Slovenian team from the University of Ljubljana which created a synthetic vaccine for the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers. In 2006, the same Slovenian team had presented an idea for preventing infection of human cells by HIV. In 2010 the competition had grown from the original four teams (in 2005) to 130 teams from all over the world: Asia (38), Europe (38), the US (37), Canada (10), Latin America (4) and Africa (1). The ideas presented by these student teams were amazing, inspiring, brilliant. A team from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne aimed to stop malaria propagation by acting on the vector, that is, the mosquito itself, by coaxing the bacterium that naturally lives in the mosquito's gut to express an immunotoxin that can prevent the malarial agent from infecting the mosquito, thereby eliminating transmission of the parasite to humans. A team from Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain had a plan to change the climate of Mars (yes, the planet) by building an engineered yeast, resistant to temperature changes and able to produce a dark pigment which will be responsible for a global temperature increase.(They received a gold prize for their efforts). A team from the University of Washington in Seattle were attempting to synthesize antibiotics, starting with Anthrax for the competition. In my view, this is an idea of staggering proportions given the current crisis in antibiotic resistance. (This same same team went on to win the North American competition the following year for engineering E. coli to produce both diesel fuel and an enzyme to break down gluten in the digestive tract.) Also receiving a gold prize was a team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong for creating a living data storage system. Apparently, you no longer need to rely exclusively on micro-chips anymore to store an absurd amount of data in a small space. And the big winner was once again the team from Slovenia for coming up with an "assembly-line" molecule for DNA engineering. I don't pretend to fully understand it, but Church likens it to the moment in the industrial revolution when standardized nuts and bolts, machine-tools and assembly-line production systems were introduced. There was a time when to build a machine you had to build everything basically from scratch, custom made and hand-tooled. But around the turn of the 18th century a wave of standardized machinery became the norm, accelerating the process of invention and industrialization exponentially. Apparently, the judges thought the "assembly-line" molecule was potentially at that level of importance. Church's larger point here is that we are on the cusp of assembly-line genetic engineering. Expect an explosion in innovation.

I wish I were young again. I would have loved to have studied this stuff and then done something with it. This book is the first thing in a very long while that gives me hope and enthusiasm for the future. Come on kids, including my bright nephew who is getting a copy of this, get going on this stuff so we can all live past a hundred! Before it's too late!!Although I took and enjoyed high school chemistry, I am not in science or technology at all, but I loved reading this book. The subject is fascinating but the authors write wonderfully and with humor, which has been most appreciated. -JEH
