I’m a huge fan of Nora’s....her writing. Her podcast. Her humor. She has the ability to make me laugh while crying. I listened to the whole thing in a day. So glad she narrated!

Never have I before laughed, cried and said OUT LOUD "Amen" while reading a book. All of that happened within the first 3 pages! If you've lost your love, know someone who has or are just trying to be a more understanding decent human being... who likes to laugh.... and sometimes cry BUY THIS BOOK!

It's amazing how sometimes a book can just hit you at the right time. No Happy Endings did that for me. This is a book I needed to be reading tonight, and I was reading it because Nora mailed me a copy and maybe I also needed that surprise act of genuine kindness. (Honestly, it's going to take me months to stop being excited that I own a book signed by #ralphiegrams. Note this wasn't in exchange for review, literally just a super nice gift.)This book is about persisting, and loving, and people. It's about religion and feminism. But it's also funny? And entertaining? Except then you might cry. Basically: this book covers some ground. I think it's similar in feel to It's Okay to Laugh, while perhaps more often taking a big picture view of things (e.g., dating, gender norms, grieving). I did find No Happy Endings to be a bit better written (which feels like a slam on the first book, though it's not! Read that one too). Both these books hit me. It's like if Oprah were 3 decades younger; lost her baby, dad, and husband in short succession; and had a tendency to ramble. (Yes, that's absolutely a high compliment.)There's a lot packed into this one (< 300-page) book but I hope what really cuts through is that loss is not something to "get over." Like, when someone dies, it's not as if they never existed. And if you're happy a year later, it's not as if you're no longer sad they died. As Nora puts it, there are "multitudes included in all our experiences." (She says a lot more, but I don't want to ruin the reading experience for you.) This memoir comforted me, made me reflect, and taught me - all while being engaging. Highly recommend.

This book is exactly what the title says it is, however, I found it of little use. I was looking for money saving tips to use once at the resort and you will find very little of that here. We had already paid for our trip to Atlantis when I bought the book so the fact that 95% of this book is about how to travel "almost free" made it of no use to me. Even though I found the book to be of little use, I could not give fewer stars. It was my fault for buying it because it is what it says it is! There is a small section about saving money once at the resort but all of that information is easily found by researching internet reviews of the resort. If you are looking for information about how to "work" the travel system you might find it interesting. If you want to more about getting the most out of a visit to Atlantis, study the travel reviews. By the way, I still only gave it three stars because I can't imagine jumping through all the hoops to accomplish the goal...but I guess some folks might give it a try.

Pretty simple. It's how to stay NEAR Atlantis, not Atlantis. Misleading. And most of the methods for getting free stuff are fluid: offers are valid for limited time and may be expired when you read the pamphlet. Save your $4 for a play at the slots, you have a better chance of return on investment.

I'll have to say that before I began reading this book, I was skeptical of the author's claims of practically free airfare and resort hotel stay in the Bahamas! However, once I began the easy-to-read, simple-to-do steps that the author outlines, I was blown away!I had vaguely heard about the points that you receive when you sign up for credit cards, but had no idea that you could get so creative with them, and actually use them to your advantage in this way. The author gives you easy to follow instructions for signing up for various offers, and lays it out in such a way that even a newbie like me can get it done and get to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas ASAP!I'm going to get started right away (although you must have good credit for this to work) on signing up for my first offer so I can enjoy a relaxing, stress-free, and almost free vacation.

This is a good/great educational tool, to learn how to get those credit card sign up bonouses. With the bonous you can then move on to using those credits to book airline tickets and hotel stays.

I must say that I have never been to Paradise Island or any other islands in Bahamas. I always wanted to go and my wife has been nagging me for years to take her and the kinds on a REAL vacation. But as we all know, the economy is still in a slump and spending 3 to 4,000 dollars on a exotic trip is just not an option for us.When I came across this book I was skeptical of it's promise. After all, how would it even be possible to get credit cards companies to basically pay for your summer vacation? This book really explains it all. I have no doubt that if we follow the exact steps outlined in the beautifully illustrated book, we will not only get a free stay, but even free flights for me, my wife and 2 kids. Grated, it does require you to take out a bunch of credit cards but unless you are planning to buy a house the next year or so, your credit will be just fine. In fact it might even go up after 6 months or so, as long as you pay down the balance to zero every month on the cards. Also, you don't want to rank up a bunch of new debt just to get a free trip. It is all explained in this book, how to get your almost free trip, how to get approved and how to best manage the cards. In conclusion, this is a book that describes in great detail a guaranteed system on how you can keep your wife and kids happy and treat them to a great vacation, without braking your bank account.

I have heard about how you can win these deals, but this book spells it all out on how you can actually do it! I can't wait to try. The author explains step by step how you can plan and get an almost free trip to Atlantis. If you love travel and aren't afraid of putting in a little effort, this book will help make your next vacation become a reality. Happy Travels!

A complete rip off.

I thought it would be a little easier, but it seemed like a lot of work and a little confusing. However i did apply for one cc he suggested.

#3,328 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A Team of Rivals, by Goodwin, is a review of Lincoln and his cabinet during the Civil War. The problem with the book is it could have been written in one third of the space. Very little of the book actually deals with the events of the time. Much too much of the book is devoted to details of the tiniest kind which are of no interest to me.For example, Ms Goodwin lets us know a lot of details about the parties being given by Mary Lincoln, how many steps a certain house was from the center of power, where Lincoln spent his time waiting for election returns, who he talked to during the time he was waiting for election returns, what jokes Lincoln would tell while he was a circuit court attorney, what kind of bonnet Mary Lincoln bought that needed ribbon or strings, how much money was spent on decorating the White House by Mary Lincoln, and on, and on, and on.Meanwhile, not much is said about the Civil War. Battles, and their results, are recounted in the most abbreviated way. Lincoln's disappointments in his generals are given very short treatment. Of course, we are told how many drafts the Emancipation Proclamation went through and who changed what words or made recommendations for changes, but as for the war itself we are told very little. Too bad, because Lincoln was probably a better general than many of those in charge during the Civil War. More was needed on conversations with the generals, and less on who attended what party and was wearing what kind of dress.Another shortcoming of the book is its reluctance to criticize Lincoln. Lincoln was not a demigod without flaws who always made wonderful decisions. It is true that the author handles some of his flaws and points out some minor problems with his decisions; however, the really large errors are simply not discussed. For example, after the election Lincoln did not go to great lengths to make it clear to the Southern States that he would not abolish slavery and might even support a Constitutional Amendment to allow slavery to continue in the Southern States where it was already a fact. He would only oppose its expansion to the territories. By not speaking out more forcefully, he allowed Southern secessionism to go forward on misinterpretations of his stands. The discussion of this decision is ignored. His decision to raise an army after the Confederates fired on Union forces in Charleston Harbor drove Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina into the Confederacy, but not much is said about this. This exit of the more moderate and powerful states along the border with the Union had disastrous consequences; however, little is said about this decision... and so on.By failing to discuss important decisions, or even non-decisions, the author leaves the reader with the impression that what ball was thrown by Mary Lincoln was more important than what evaluations may have started, or hurt or helped, the war against the South. The book is easy to read, as are most gossip magazines, but actually conveys little in the way of real information of lasting value. Most of the information was boring and of little use. A Team of Rivals is good for tidbits of history but not for a deep understanding of history. Much better and more complete information, important information, can be had in so many other books that reading this was a waste of time.

A must read for anyone who aspires to make an impact in the world and leave a legacy. Lincoln shows us how can be humble, true, kind, and yet politically astute and persuasive. The position of United States in the world and what it stands for is made all that stronger thanks to Lincoln. I learnt a lot from this book, especially about being non-judgmental, patient and thoughtful. The amount of time Lincoln took to write all his speeches, and the care and thought behind each word - yes, they deserve to be enshrined and read over and over by millions of people.

A wonderful nuanced book that resonates mightily with and informs what is going on today. Read it if you want to understand any kind of historical basis for what is now happening in the U.S. Read it if you love the minutia of history—every conversation ever recorded during the Lincoln period, every permutation and convolution of the Civil War, the complex emotional motivations behind the factions—or if you feel as if you need to learn U.S. history.Regarding Kindle version:Pros: It is lightweight, which is a lot easier than reading a 900 page book.Cons: The search function is not enabled in the Kindle version. The back-of-the-book Index has hyperlinks, but you have to manually page through it to find what you want to search for. This is a real drawback in a book of so many characters that you often want to be reminded about who somebody is.

When you think of Lincoln, you think of the Lincoln-Douglass debates, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and his tragic assassination. (Sorry, not a Vampire Hunter). You think of him as an example for leadership. But how many people realize he was one of the best managers in the world by asking three of his political rivals to serve underneath him and get great results? Or how balanced he was in balancing political allies who were each other's political or personal rivals?I enjoyed this book a lot because the author looks at not just Lincoln, but the other persons with their own aspirations - Seward, Stanton, Bates, Chase, and other politically powerful families like the Blairs, and some of them have very big egos. Yet all of them were humbled and realized just how much wiser and stronger Lincoln was. There would be no powers behind the throne. Lincoln alone was the boss, but he depended on rivals turned friends to do their job to run the Union during the Civil War.Former President Barack Obama really liked this book and seemed to have been inspired by Lincoln and this book to form his first presidential cabinet. While Obama and I firmly disagree on his view on religion, the military, healthcare, and domestic policy, liking this book is one thing we have in common. Overall, I can see why Goodwin deserves her accolades and tells a powerful story of a humble, kind, but determined man to rise above his peers and serve his country in its darkest hour.

Excellent reading. A complete story of the genius of Abraham Lincoln and how he assembled a cabinet from his political rivals to lead the country through the Civil War. Goodwin, through extensive research of not only Lincoln's writings and speeches, but those of Secretary of State Seward and Secretary of War Stanton and many others,, profiles historic figures of the era. She paints a picture of Lincoln's personality and his ability to use humor and magnanimity to repair the Union and secure freedom from slavery for its citizens. He also married one of my relatives, Mary Todd, and Goodwin offers a sympathetic view of Mrs. Lincoln.

This is one of the most insightful political analyses I have ever read. His depth of history and the value of dissenting opinions is brought forth in a way that I have never encountered. In these days of partisanship, we should require all officeholders to read this book and contemplate how their administrations would benefit by embracing those with disparate views.

4.5 starsI loved this book so much I read it in one sitting in the bathtub of all places. And trust me, I live in student housing in desperate need of renovation so that is by no means a cozy bathtub, but I was so engrossed in this story that I kept reading long after the water got cold.I admit, I grew up on a farm driving tractors ever since I was a little kid (so young that I look at my kids and think Were my parents really crazy enough to let me operate machinery when I was that age???) so I LOVED all of DJ's description of the farm. This setting was pitch perfect for me. Catherine Murdock knows about agriculture and farm living and Midwestern charm. That part about having to send a favorite cow, Joe Namath, away in her old age? I have lived this, so I felt a connection to this story and its characters that I haven't felt in a long time.Besides that setting, I was captivated by DJ's authentic voice. As she struggles to be seen by her family and find her own balance between her work on the farm and pretty much everything else that takes a back seat to that, I felt equal parts admiration and sympathy for this hard-working girl who needs a bit of appreciation.Of course I love a little romance in my YA books, and Dairy Queen has just a dash of romance that develops perfectly in that slow, realistic kind of way.I've had this book sitting on my shelf unread for two years, so thanks to Colette who read it and told me I was going to love it because she knew me back during the farm girl days. She was right.Everything that is wrong in Catching Jordan is right in Dairy Queen. THIS is what Catching Jordan should have been.

When I read a contemporary YA book that's as enjoyable and wonderful as this one, I wonder why I don't read more contemporary YA. I like to read for meaty issues--and this book actually has some--but I also like to read for the sheer joy of reading, which is why it's such a pleasure to pick up a book like this one. I wanted to just fall into the pages and spend as much time with its characters as I possibly good. One thing that really struck me about this book was its voice. I liked how it was sort of stream-of-consciousness at times. The wording was very inelegant, and that made the book wonderful because it felt like I actually was reading the musings of a teenager who was growing up on a farm. Sometimes characters in YA novels feel more sophisticated than they should. This isn't to say that there aren't sophisticated teenagers out there, because of course there are, but adolescence is a time when you spend so much of your time flailing away that I liked that it showed in this book. Even adults don't always have it all figured out, so it was refreshing to read a book like this, where I wasn't confused by a world-weary attitude that felt too old for a sixteen-year-old character.Along with the well-done voice, this is a book that tackles a variety of issues in a sensitive, convincing way. D.J. and her family are pretty typical in that they have trouble talking about any big issues. It's uncomfortable to do this, and I could really buy into the idea that they spend a lot of time concealing what they feel. Naturally, their reluctance to talk about anything leads to a whole host of issues, and I thought Murdock did a wonderful job of showing how difficult it can be to find your voice and to talk about the things that really matter with the people you love the most. The family dynamic was just so convincing and so well done. No one is really to blame, and none of the characters are what I would consider bad, they're just all human beings whose foibles complicate their lives and relationships. I don't mind really angsty books if they have something to say, but it's nice to read something down-to-earth, where people are dealing with the sort of communications issues most of us deal with on a regular basis.I loved D.J. as a character. I loved that she wasn't anyone uber special. She felt like a girl to whom I could relate, a girl who might actually exist. She makes mistakes, she does dumb things, and she acts in ways that hurt other people, even when that's not her intent. Yet her earnestness pulled me in, and I really felt for her as she struggled to figure out what she wanted out of her life. I think it's normal for a lot of people at that age to feel that way, to pause in the middle of doing all those things they're told they're supposed to do and wonder what the point is. I liked that D.J. had her own reasons for wanting to pursue football, and I like that, though Murdock touches on the difficulties this entails, it doesn't become some huge deal or the impetus for an epic battle. The story is more personal, and I was glad for it.As soon as I finished this book, I noticed that there were two more and I instantly wanted to read them. While this is a trilogy, this first book isn't like the first book in most trilogies that I read. The story arc is complete, the important things are tied up, but there's still more room for story, more potential for growth from all the characters. I can hardly wait to spend more time with the Schwenks.

D.J. Schwenk is fifteen, and she lives on her family's dairy farm in Red Bend, Wisconsin. D.J. has almost completely taken over all the work on the farm following an injury to her father. Her mother is working two jobs, her younger brother isn't talking, and her two older bothers, both college football stars, have stayed away despite the family's struggles. The last thing that D.J. wants is help in the form of spoiled, lazy quarterback Brian Nelson, who plays for rival Hawley. Brian's coach wants D.J. to teach him how to work, and when D.J. agrees to train him, she starts to think that maybe she should be the one trying out for the football team.Any summary of this book is insufficient, because there is so much going on in this novel. Each character is fully developed with his or her own story, and we experience it all through D.J.'s eyes as she struggles through this one amazing summer.D.J. is an awesome character and a great narrator. She's tough, and she's funny, and she's trying really hard to not think about all the things that are going wrong in her family. She doesn't whine about her circumstances, but it's clear that she's carrying far too many burdens for a girl just turning sixteen. Fortunately, D.J.'s toughness and work ethic carry her through, and her friendship with Brian Nelson changes everything for her, but not in the ways one would expect.Brian Nelson is one of my favorite boy YA characters ever, and if I had read this book as a teen, I would have been in love. Brian is not perfect; he does several lousy things in Dairy Queen, and since there are two more books, I'm sure he'll mess up again. At the start of the book he is lazy and spoiled, and he's not especially nice to D.J. or her family. But Brian is smart, and he's talented (if untrained), and his mother has turned him into a teenage boy that can actually talk about feelings and problems, which is completely foreign to D.J. D.J.'s family doesn't talk about anything, but Brian forces her to really look at her life, and he is likewise capable of learning and changing as a result of the time that he spends with D.J. Their friendship is a joy to read about, and makes the potential for romance between them that much more wonderful. What really makes this book awesome is that I could write ten more paragraphs about great parts of this book, be it the family relationships or the description of life in a small town or just D.J.'s unique view of the world. This book is about more than a girl who plays football, or two unlikely friends. It's about the most fully realized character that I've read this year, a fifteen-year-old on the brink of adulthood, with all the wonderful and terrible truths that come with it. This is absolutely not a book to miss!

I bought this book after flipping through it at REI, and I thought it had hiking routes in it. But the hiking routes were actually backpacking trips, with routes to campsites. This was not a disappointment as I was actually looking for a book with more detailed information on overnight trips vs general day hikes. This book is broken into two parts: camping and backpacking. The camping trips are generally areas that you can drive to and park, where as the backpacking trips require you to hike to your destination. Each half is divided into 3 sections, covering the North Bay, East Bay, and Santa Cruz Mountains. Furthermore, the table of contents has a second organization method, grouping the trips by theme. Some of the themes are waterfalls, wildlife, lakes, and dog friendly campgrounds. This is a great tool if you're in the mood for something specific on your trip. The part where this book shines is the information included on each park. Take a look at the excerpt provided by Amazon and you will see the type of information given. One of the most useful pieces of data that would be difficult to find on the parks websites would be when the best time to go is. Crowds can put a damper on a peaceful walk in the woods. My favorite though is at the end of each trip's listing, where the author tells you who to contact if you would like to contribute back to the park. One downside of the book is the limited number of trips. There are only about 25 each of backpacking and camping trips. But if you went on an overnight trip every two weeks this would still be enough trips to last you two years, so that's not too bad.If you simply want to take day hiking trips then another book might suit you better than this one. But if you would like to go overnight camping in the Bay Area, either at a campground site or in a remote backpacking camp, this book is an excellent place to start. The information provided is well worth the cost of the book.

Finding this book is rather difficult now and pricy but its fantastic and so far the trail descriptions have been accurate and lovely. Any time i need a new place to go check out i start with this book.

I bought this book so that my boyfriend and I could do more camping and hiking closer to home instead of driving all the way to the mountains. If you are interested in exploring the bay area this is a fine book to start with. It is easy to flip through and it is categorized by region and interest, like where to go to see waterfalls, and wildlife etc. There is also a handy little map for each site along with it's topography. There are sections for family oriented visits as well as more secluded areas to camp or hike in. The book gives details on camp fees but have not been able to confirm if all are up to date. At least it's a good starting point!

Excellent book that has a range of trips to take. The book is detailed in its maps, and elevation so you really know what to expect from the trail. I look forward to using it for years to come.

I visit the San Francisco Bay Area several times a year and am always astounded by the amount of outdoor recreation that is literally at the doorstep of local residents. Yet most Bay area hiking seems to be of the "day-outing" variety. You can stroll through the redwoods at John Muir Woods National Monument, walk along the Golden Gate Bridge, or visit numerous regional parks for an afternoon picnic. But, as it happens, camping and backpacking opportunities also abound within just an hour or so drive of the metropolitan area. To learn about where you can do these activities, just pick up Heid's book. This book has a number of virtues to recommend it. It is very well organized. Camping and backpacking are in separate portions of the book, and each section is further subdivided into three geographical regions: North Bay, East Bay, and Santa Cruz Mountains, making it easy to locate a camping or backpacking option. Additionally, the book has excellent topographical maps for the backpacking routes. Heid has carefully checked the mileage (trail signs tend to vary) and also provides detailed information on what to expect at the backcountry sites. Finally, Heid provides information on how to "give back" to the various organizations that protect open space in the Bay Area.I will personally use this book mostly for camping. I like long day-hikes and most of the backpacking routes described in the book can also be hiked during the day. Heid's information on what to expect at the campground (and how far ahead to make reservations) are invaluable, as well as his discussions of area highlights nearby camps. This book was my most valuable purchase on a Memorial Day visit to Big Basin State Park. Everyone who loves California hiking and camping, particularly in the off season, should get it.

This book is well written and does a good job of covering SF Bay Area backpacking trails. However, while reading the sections on hikes I am intimately familiar with, I find some misinformation. For example, Camp Herbert on the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail has been closed for well over a decade, but sadly, it is discussed as if it were still open for trail camping. So be sure to make some phone calls and check out the facts before you commit to a backpacking trip from this book; it could save you much frustration. This is still a good addition to any hiking library, unfortunately, you'll need to double check it.

Any San Francisco hiker needs a copy of this one on their bookshelf. Great descriptions, from where to park to the hours of the campground pool, this book has it all.
