I am actually not done reading this but wanted to leave a review to say this book has been helping me so much. My fears of death are so intense, sometimes I have moments I just want to die, ironically, because it's too much to bare. Already, this book has given me a new perspective and is helping me not be so afraid. I'm glad I bought this as I am now not wanting to give up but instead live my life to the fullest.

This book was quoted in another book I just finished reading and I downloaded a sample first. Before I finished the sample, I bought the book. I was recently sick and had no medical diagnosis to my symptoms. An intense fear of death and dying arose several times during my sickness. Two such episodes were so powerful, I felt consumed by fear of dying daily. I wouldn't let myself go to sleep on some nights. When I started reading this book, I first was scared even more. All this death talk!! However, I could not stop reading! I was obsessed with reading more and just dealt with the fear. Now, that I've finished the book, I feel so much more peace, relief that there are many, countless, people who have felt what I have been feeling. That my fears are natural progression in life and not death premonitions. I really like the questions in the Afterward and will go back over time to answer these for myself and write them down. Thank you Dr. Yalom.

Incredible read. I read this as a mental health counseling student, with an interest in existential psychotherapy. But I would recommend it for ANYONE. I couldn't put it down and it gave me so much to think about. You don't need to be interested in mental health counseling or death terror to find this book amazing.

I am always skeptical of such books. I have read a few of them and I always found them missing the deep issues. This is not the case for Yalom’s book. The discussion is deep and resonates with my own understanding and concerns. The book is informed by the author’s years of experience as a therapist. The writing is enjoyable and engaging. I recommend it warmly to my friends.

This book, "Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death," is a great read for people who would like to learn a lot more about fear of death being universal and how it negatively influences many aspects of life. The author, Irvin D. Yalom, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry emeritus at Stanford University. Though he has a Jewish heritage, Dr. Yalom confessed to being an atheist. Religious people should not merely write off Yalom's insightful conclusions since he is an atheist. The fact that Yalom is an atheist does not invalidate his medical research, insights, and expertise. Atheism may be intellectual or a reaction to and a defense against the God of fear-based religion.The title, "Staring at the Sun," is pregnant with meaning. Yalom postulates that just as a person cannot stare at the sun without being physically blinded, no one can stare at death without being emotionally blinded. Phobia is from the Greek word "phobos"--fear. Humans have at least one phobia. Many have more than one, and some people have multiple phobias. Some of the more common phobias are: acrophobia (fear of heights), agoraphobia (fear of public places), algophobia (fear of pain), claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces), hemophobia (fear of blood), mysophobia (fear of dirt/germs), pathophobia (fear of disease), xenophobia (fear of strangers), and panophobia (fear of everything). Some clinicians have theorized that all phobias are just different manifestations of one primary phobia--the mother of all phobias.In this fascinating book, based on Yalom's lifetime work of studying fear of death and helping people deal with their phobias, it appears that there is One Great Phobia--FEAR OF DEATH! According to Yalom, "Death anxiety is omnipresent in the unconscious as an intrinsic component of the human condition; the absence of evident death anxiety at a conscious level does not mean that the individual is without death anxiety; death anxiety is easily aroused." He explained that for some people, death anxiety is in the background--corralled in the unconscious mind. "But for other people, the anxiety is louder, unruly, tending to erupt at three in the morning, leaving them gasping at the specter of death. They are besieged by the thought that they, too, will soon be dead--as will everyone around them...Thoughts of death may seep into and permeate your dreams no matter how hidden from your conscious mind. Every nightmare is a dream in which death anxiety has escaped its corral and menaces the dreamer."Omnipresent-death anxiety is immeasurably exacerbated by morbid fear of God and eternal damnation in literal hell fire which is spiritual terrorism. Conversely, fear of death is greatly ameliorated by a totally-loving conception of God and a sane, sensible explanation of purifying hell fire in the Holy Bible and other Holy Books which are emotionally-healing and life-transforming rather than worsening fear of "The One Great Phobia!"Boyd C. One of the best books I have read. Essentially, it helps you deal with issues you might have regarding death. If you have death anxiety which does not let you get rid of some things in the back of your mind then you should take a look. The book reads from the point of view of a therapist who has dedicated time to help people get rid of their fear of death. Not a boring read. Therapy for a cheap price.

Nick Lane, Reader in Evolutionary Biochemistry, Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College of LondonDr Nick Lane is a British biochemist and writer. He was awarded the first Provost's Venture Research Prize in the Department of Genetics, Evolution, and Environment at University College London, where he is now a Reader in Evolutionary Biochemistry. Scientists for the most part stick to peer reviewed, confirmed and generally accepted theory in a book for the general audience. Sadly this most often leads to didactic prose that conveys little of the excitement of scientific endeavor. To dramatize the scope of the conclusion after it is reached, Neal DeGrasse Tyson style, is not the same.Nick Lane draws findings from disparate fields, combines them in very complex decision trees, and shows how they suggest ideas about the origin and nature of life that are compelling if not generally accepted. He is given some latitude by the fact that nothing in evolutionary biochemistry is generally accepted. The intellectual leaps are at that level where real science is done. Exciting and accessible to non-specialists though not necessarily easy.Reading these books is a pleasure akin to watching a world class athlete. The result of reading these books is a very different and greatly expanded understanding of the living world.

As a research scientist, I am highly critical of scientific reviews and literature published for mass consumption.Nick Lane is one of the few authors who consistently does his homework and his presentation of the state of the art,both in terms of hard evidence and hypothesis, is spot on.

This is a great overview of so many topics that are all under the umbrella of oxygen. While there is information that the general public will find interesting, I find that the way it is written is probably more appropriate for someone with a scientific background as there are some highly technical areas. The information about Vitamin C and anti-oxidants was extremely insightful because this book provides a clearer picture of everything that could be happening in our bodies in order to allow us to be healthy. Good read and I will use some of this information for my AP Biology class, as there are some very interesting and insightful examples that are noteworthy. This is the first book that I have read by Nick Lane, but it won't be my last!!

In "Oxygen" author and biochemist Nick Lane takes an in depth look at the role oxygen plays in the evolution of life as we know it on Earth. Just how, and when, did life adjust to this deadly element? And, what effect does it have on our everyday lives and aging pricess? While written for layman reader with some background in chemistry this is defiantly not an easy read. Lane pulls no punches when explaining chemical processes and he must often use scientific nomenclature to identify the various enzymes and the inner workings of a cell. As in his previous books, Lane's writing is clear, concise and ever interesting while explaining this complex subject. I had to struggle through some portions of this book but, in the end, it was worth the effort. I read this book on the string recommendation of my brother. It provides a fascinating (and surprising) history of life on earth - not the history I expected - starting at the very beginning. There was a lot of chemistry in the first half and if you are not an engineer or a scientist, you might find it daunting - which is the only reason it lost a star (I am an engineer). The latter half uses the foundation set to provide a very compelling theory of diseases and the causes thereof. I would strongly recommend this book to any medical professional or bio-chemist. Fascinating.

The other read was mitochondria also by Nick Lane. It took two readings each to absorb their depth and how the puzzle of life's evolution, that began shortly after the earth cooled down, to present and how and why the energy engine of mitochondria evolved. In Oxygen how oxygen facilitates the possibility of multi cellular life forms and is largely responsible for their demise, either for single cells or the entire organism. Both books are loaded with information and are best read as a single book full of very readable knowledge that will satisfy or wet the appetite of all.

I'm still reading this. It's a very interesting book but I wouldn't call it light reading. The author goes to great pains to not only give you the facts but to explain why he knows it's a fact. Very well documented and researched and lists of sources.makes you realize just how improbable this world really is.

After producing for 10+ years, I wanted to get better at my mixing skills. I can't believe how much I learned form this book. Mixing aside, it talks about good composition and production fundamentals that I had never even though about. His language is plain and straightforward. He suggests plenty of free and cheap solutions as well. Many books I've read, discuss tricks that are completely inaccessible to people who don't have 15k+ worth of gear and engineering school under their belt.

I've been mixing my own music for nearly 30 years now, when I got my first cassette four-track! I've read so many books and manuals on recording, mixing, mastering, etc. I subscribe to Sound On Sound, Tape Op, etc for several years. I have been posting on Gearslutz (music production forum) for a decade now...I feel like this one book could replace all that.Serious.Every page is packed with amazing tips and tricks. Which makes sense considering this the man behind Mix Rescue in SOS. He gets so many problems thrown at them and he solves them in very elegant, practical ways. He is a professional audio problem-solver! Quite often I'll listen to the before and after mixes at Mix Rescue and think the 'before' sounds perfectly acceptable. Then I'll hear Mike Senior's mix and he's elevated it to a love of professionalism that just sounds classy.I'm used to reading pretty dry manuals and reference books. This one is written in a very down-to-earth, readable style with a sense of humor as well.I highly recommend this book to anyone who mixes professionally or casually.

After mixing and mastering a couple CDs with rather trivial arrangements of just 2 instruments, I thought I was ready to jump into something more complex with songs consisting of 6-10 tracks. Little did I know I was in over my head. I started reading this book just as I was starting the project and am thankful I did. I've been scanning the various chapters and then going into detail where I found big holes in my knowledge. This project is coming along fairly well now, even knowing I'm probably going to find sections of the book that will make me want to go back and redo things that I've already done. For me, with my (limited) prior experience, this book is at exactly the right level for me to understand and make immediate application to my current project. It may not be as great for someone who has zero experience in mixing, but I highly recommend it to anyone with a basic idea about mixing and needing good, practical advice on how to improve quickly.

This is by far the best book I've read on mixing. I have read a couple of other books on mixing and mastering and hundreds of magazine articles on the subject. Mike Senior tells you not only what problems to look for but gives you multiple detailed solutions for fixing them! A lot of other books will go into long winded descriptions of the problems you may face, but rarely explain them in a way as easy to understand and most often they don't give you clear instruction on how to fix them. And, other resources are often DAW specific whereas Mike Senior gives you the tools regardless of the DAW you're working in.Let me tell what this book is not. It's not a manual for recording. This book assumes that you already have your project recorded (often from the perspective that you're working on someone else's project) and that you're ready to start mixing. It does not discuss proper micing technique, effects during recording, or basically anything to do with the recording process. This book also does not cover mastering in any form. Senior goes to great lengths to explain exactly how to get a commercially viable mix completed that's ready for mastering. Look elsewhere to learn about mastering.This book was a pleasure to read. While there is no lack of specific technical explanation, Mike Senior keeps it at a minimum for need to know topics only. Actually most of the technical jargon will be during the first 80 pages when he is explaining why it is so important for your monitoring environment to be up to par. But, I wouldn't recommend skipping over the beginning even if you think you know all about having the proper treatment for your mixing room. There is tons of excellent info in this section and Mike even calls it the most important part of his book. Otherwise, he often tries to throw in a few jokes and some witty banter to help keep it light. And, all of his advice is backed up by quotes from some of the top names in the recording industry.I'd like to mention that Senior also recommends a bunch of free plugins that can help you achieve the results he is. So, don't think that this is going to be a lesson in "you don't have the cash to get the gear necessary to get the job done."Seriously, if you've read my entire review then you're ready to click add to cart and check out. You can forgo reading any other source about mixing. Everything you need to know is right in this book. From monitoring, to timing and pitch, arrangement editing, and every type of plugin processing. Honestly, I didn't know there were so many different uses for reverb.FYI: I've been home recording, mixing, and mastering as an enthusiast for over 15 yrs. From techno to hip hop, and now rock with a live 6-piece band. We record 20 tracks simultaneously in our home bedroom studio. Since finishing this book my mixes are already 10x better than before and I've barely scratched the surface on implementing the techniques detailed in this book.
